SATURDAY EVENING. AUG. 21, 1880.
Ah Illinois Lady In Europe.
It is very comical by tbe way, te hear
some of our party insist en talking geed
American te these foreigners. One very
fleshy and very dignified lady from Illinois,
in particular, who shows much geed sense
iu ether respects, carefully refrains from
learning a single word of any foreign lan
guage, but insists upon talking te the dis
tracted chambermaids in English. She
will ring the bell en arriving at her room
in a new hotel, and say in tue most com
placent way te the girl who answers it :
"Please bring me seme het water."
"Jc no cemprends pas, madamc," re
plies the maid, who usually speaks French,
in whatever country we find her.
Madame raises her voice and speaks iu
italics :
"Water! het water! het tcatcr! you
knew !" accompanied by various grimaces
and gesticulations, with a final wave to
wards the pitcher, whereupon the girl
jumps at a happy conclusion and says :
"Oh eui ! d'eau la fraichc !"
Madame Illinois smiles assent, and the
girl disappears aud returns with a bottle
of drinking water, which is probably fol
lowed by towels and sundry ether conveni
ences, before the desired one is hit upon,
the lady meanwhile raising her voice
another pitch at every remonstrance, aud
wrinkling the fat face into a thousand un
availing grimaces. And then she says
complacently :
" I can generally make them understand
English !"
The same lady, when lirst puzzling ever
Knglish money in the endeavor te pay her
lare in a Glasgow teamway (European for
street car, you knew) quite disregarded
the pi offered explanation of a fellow-traveler,
but tinned instead te a Scotch
woman of the lower class and asked what
the fare was.
" A jKiiiny, ma'in."
"And what is this piece of money?"
"A shilling, nia'aui."
"And hew many pennies are there in a
shilling?"
"Twelve pence, ma'am," and the woman
looked surprised, evidently wendecing
whether this foreigner had ever been te
.school.
"And hew miieli is that in our money
in American money, you knew?"
Whereupon ensued such a jabbering
among the ill-natured Scotchwemen iu
the ear, aud such a tittering among the
ill-natured Scetchmen, as threatened te
raise a serious commotion. Aud when
slightly remonstrated with for expecting
mere of an ignorant Scotch woman
than she knew heiself, the irritated reply
was :
"I shall ask all the questions I want te,
in a foreign laud." And she has done it, 1
premise you. Correspondence Columbus
