The Outlook Over the Country.
The following statement, showing the
condition of tbe cotton, corn, wheat and
tobacco, was issued by the department of
agriculture :
Department of Agriculture, Aug.
16. Cotten The returns te this depart
ment since August 1, shown an increase in
the condition of cotton since these return
ed in July. The average condition for the
whole country is 102. The following are
the reports by states :
Forty counties in North Carolina aver
age 100.
Twenty counties in Seuth Carolina aver
age 98.
Eighty-four ceuuties in Georgia average
98.
Twelve counties in Flerida average 96.
Twenty-eight counties in Alabama av
erage 99.
Thirty-seven counties in Mississippi av
erage 99.
Fifteen counties in Louisiana average
99.
Seventy counties in Texas average 110.
Thirty-seven counties in Arkansas aver
age 10G.
Twenty-five counties in Tennessee aver aver
age 107.
Timely rains are reported in all sections,
rather tee much in the states bordering en
the Mississippi river and Texas,
The stand is geed and some ten days
earlier than last year. Worms, ret and
rust arc mentioned in every state, but no
material damage yet done.
Cern The general average of the corn
crop shows some decline since a month,
and is for August 1, 93 against 100 en July
1. As compared with the condition report
ed en August 1, 1879, there is an increase
of 5 percent. Of 1,243 counties reporting
the crop en August 1, 355 report a full
average, 488 report above, and 400 report
below.
The New England, Middle and Atlantic
states as far south as North Carolina each
show a very high average. Seuth Carolina,
Georgia and Alabama show the effect of
dreuth. The whole Mississippi valley
shows an increase ever last year, except
Illinois and Indiana, where there was tee
much rain early in the season, followed by
a sevcre dreuth in June and July.
Spring wheat The returns of August 1
show a condition of spring wheat of 88
against 81 last year. The weather during
July was favorable mere se than during
the last two years. In Minnesota the re
port is very high, but in Iowa and Wiscon
sin it is net much better than last year.
The damage is attributed te rust and
chinch bugs. In Nebraska and Kansas
the early mouths wcre very dry, and the
rains which came were tee late te restere
the less. California and Oregon report
the highest condition since several years.
Tobacco The general average of the
whole country is 86, and was in 1879, at
the same time", 77, and in 1878, 84. There
has been no change reported since a month,
except a dccline in Maryland and Ken-
tuckey, owing te dreuth, and an increase
in Virginia, owing te lavoranie weatner,
of 7 per cent.
