The Tasting Girl of Washington County. The Tanner fast has called attention te the condition of a daughter of Hen. Jehn A. Happer, of "Washington county, Pa., who is 24 years of age and for years has suffered from nervous prostration in which she scarcely cats at all. Further pros trated by the shock of her brother's acci dental killing, she has net walked across the fleer for two years A Pittsburgh Leader reporter found her willing te tell him something about her case : "It is fully sixteen years age," she said, "since I have felt that I was net in the condition of healthy girlhood. I se stated te my physicians but they said that I would outgrew any feeling of illness I thought I possessed and paid no attention tome. Se it ran along for four years or mere, and one day in class a feeling came ever mc as of utter numbness; my eyes seemed te have lest their use andwere seem ingly paralyzed and I seemed in a state of semi-consciousness, and then frightful pains took possession of my face. Pre vious te this I had felt a less of appetite and even before seized with this attack I had ceased te cat any solids. After this attack I could eat nothing; my stomach would revolt at even water, and as te my medicine I have never been able te retain it. Se it ran along and the neuralgic attack left me, but with its departure my appe tite did net return. My physicians said it was my teeth, and I went se far as te have them extracted, but the neuralgia attacks returned periodically. When they were with mc, sometimes ten days, sometimes for months, I could net eat or drink any thing. I could see ethers eat and I en jeyed it as I de new, but when I attempt it there comes a nausea; my stomach re rlf ntul wrill fnfitn tiAfltinrv " vvribe uuu. niu twiu uvvuiun. " And in the interim dnrinx these at- tacks de you net feel like eating ?" "I sometimes, when I am net ill, crave for something sour and can drink vinegar or cat au entire lemon. I can even take the juice from fruit or drink a lemonade. That is all. In years I have net touched solid feed. I cannot and I de try se hard at times. During my sickness I have gene for months unable te touch either drink or feed of any sort ; the very best I have been able te de is te held a little piece of ice in my mouth, and that has been such an ef fort. Yet you see I am apparently the picture of health ; when I returned from school, after having been racked with' pain and worn with fasting, my checks were rosy, my face flushed as if with the hue of health and my limbs strong. And there is another strange part of my case. A week age, it you had seen mc you would have looked upon a mcre shadow. I was much attenuated, both in form and face ; new you see I don't leek like a per son in ill-health, de I ?" The question put with a smile carries its own answer. Had net Miss Happer sat en an invalid's chair no ene would ever have dreamed her the faster of such duration as te make Tanner's effort appear trivial. " That is the way it is." continued the lady, "I waste away, and then will gain ilesh se rapidly, and this, tee, without taking feed, that I am compelled te think se, for I de net cat, and from whence could geed real substantial flesh come. De I sleep? Very little. I never feel like re tiring until ene or two o'clock in the morn ing, and then I de net derive any comfort from lying down it is no rest for mc." "De you mean te say, then, Miss Hap per, that you have lived for years upon lemonade, the juice of fruit and water, and have been unable te take medicine in wardly?" "That is the true state of mycase, of which I have given you a mere outline Net only has that been my case, but I have as I have already told you, gene months without eating or drinking anything ex cept a little water, and I have geno mere than ene week without even being able te touch water, and yet have net become emaciated or weakened, as ene would nat- uraliy expect. Jtly limbs, of course, are tottering and tremble at times, but this I attribute te their non-use, caused by my spinal affections. About ten months age the neuralgic and nervous attacks left me, but in their stead came a sovere cough. I expectorated but little, and it racked me sorely for six long months. If you had seen me then you would have thought one mere breath would have been my last, but that departed a few weeks age, and since then I have been gaining flesh, but my ap petite is gene, and, I fear, forever. What the end will be what is coming next is with heaven ; but I seek in vain for a so lution and a euro." "And your physicians have they no theory," "I can hardly say they have. Drs. Lank, father and son, have watched my case for years. They have studied, I am satisfied, with all the care that any case could exact, but the outcome is as I have told yea. They say it is nervous prostra tion, but my less of appetite, the pains in the stomach, this state of inanition, in fact the affection of all the organs, remains a nnzzle te them .innarentlr. as it ia te me. Once, while visiting a brother and sister-1 in-law in .Pittsburgh, l was placed under the care of Dr. Cete, since dead, and seem ed te obtain from him some relief. A well known physician of California, hearing of my case, ence visited me and seemed in terested in my case, but he advanced no opinion." Sara Bernhardt. Advertlslns Her Coming te America. Sara Bernhardt is having made in Paris twenty-seven dresses for eight plays of her repertoire and twenty for general use, pre paratory te her appearance in the United States, at a total cost of 75,000 francs. The following is a sketch of the most im portant of the dresses: Fer "Adrienne Leceuvreur," all Leuis XV. style, one toi let, with ivory satin train and front of skirt of China blue drapery, with garlands of red and tea roses and Aleacen hue en a painted bodice. Anether toilet of bro cade silk, specially made in Lyens, with cascades of flowers embroidered en the skirt and the bodice trimmed with Bruges lace. The goods alone of mis aress cost ,&wj trancs. Anether dis habille toilet, all of satin and Languedoc lace, for " Camille ;" a ball dress of white satin, with large embroidered camellias covering a ground which is wholly of pearls, a court train and a novel arrange ment secured at the shoulder and draping en the side. This dress cost 10,000 francs. Anether dress for a dishabille toilet, wholly of Valenciennes lace and pearls, for"Freu Freu;" one ivory satin dress, covered with embroidery of pearl and mother of pearl ; one lampas dress, with crimson flowers en a cream ground and a crimson train ; one dress all of black satin and jet, low necked, with a cuirass, for the "Spbynx;" one sensational dress, with yellow satin skirt, black and jet waist, with two huge ravens upholding the skirt; a house dress of brocade silk, with crim son and pale roses en a cream ground and ruby satin train. This dress is marvel marvel eusly effective. The Ballet-Dancer. Glimpses Behind the Scenes of the French Opera Leng Hours, Hard Werk ana smau i'ay. Pall Mall Gazette. 31. Ludevic Halevy, in a very bright ana cuneus book, which has jumped, quick as thought, into a second edition, has just given us a glimpse of life behind the scenes of the opera in France ; and, as his name is one of high account in French contemporary literature, the information he sets forth is well worth having. What he tells us of the mechanism of pleasure is very quaintly and prettily narrated, with an underlying vein of pathos for these who can read between the lines, and it all bears upon it the impress of truth told by a man of the world efgre.it expe rience, who is a consummate master of style and language. Se droll a book has seldom been printed, and yet it deals with a class of profes sional subjects which doubtless de net appear at all funny te these whom they concern. He relates with much spirit and' humor the real "story of the Parisian ballet girl, and traces her throughout every stage of a career te which she is often enthusiastically attached. Her life is a very hard one. She must get up before daybreak en the cold, raw mornings of midwinter te take her dancing losseu ; and again at midnight, when the opera is ever, she has te find her way en feet through snow and rain te her humble ledg ings at Mentmartrc or iiatignelles. The idea of riding in au omnibus must net enter her head ; for while in the lowest i rank of her calling she has but a franc a night, and even when grown up and pro moted te the "second quadrille' she earns only 700 francs a year, or 28. Of such stern material are our entertainments made, and in no depart ment of public amusement is a mere rigid economy practiced than in the salaries of dancers. Advancement comes very slowly and there is a great deal of competition for every vacancy in the higher ranks of the profession. Even after the most meri torious and indefatigable labors the native French girl constantly finds herself eclipsed by Russian and Italian dancers. The hi erarchy of the dancing world is as narrow and as rigorous as the hierarchy of the army. It bristles with examinations, competitive struggles and inspections. It i3 considered a great thing te meve up from the "second quadrille" te the "first quadrille," for then the salary is raised te 1,000 francs, or 40, yearly, be ing just enough, with frugal management te keep body and soul together. Frem the "first quadrille" te the second "ceryphees ' is a still mero vigorous step forward, and is rewarded with 1,300 francs a year, or, say, just 1 a week. The next step up ward is te the envied position of " pre miere ceryphee," possessing the superb emoluments of 1,500 francs, or 60, a year. Finally, after years and years of patient study, the dancing girl attains the summit of her ambition, and rises into a "petit sujet," which gives her an individu ality before the footlights. This giddy height of glory ahd pay, amounting te 1,600 francs, or in exceptional cases te 2,000 francs a year, is the largest reward that dancing genius can expect under ordinary circumstances; for the Blis ters and Taglienis form a class apart. Here and no farther can a geed dancing girl go, after a blameless youth passed in diligent capers at rehearsals and in public. Well may 31. Halevy remark that we little knew of hew much labor and misery the pireuette of a dancing girl is made. It seems that the lessens of the little crea tures destined te figure en the stage are conducted en strict disciplinary principles. Corporal punishment is in frequent use ; but, inasmuch as no French dancing-master would dare te venture en a hostile en counter with a French dancing girl, the mothers of the figurantes are called in te administer correction te them when re fractory. The charge of these ladies en an insurgent mob of chattering children who have driven their dancing-master well-nigh te despair generally restores order. Without this maternal police all teaching would be impossible; it would be like trying te give instruc tien te a fleck of wild birds. One of the most difficult parts of their educa tion is te teach them hew te smile allto allte gethcrand te leek gracefully atrthe public. They will persist in making faces at each ether till one of the observant mothers who are looking en shows symptoms of putting down her knitting te employ her hands in the bestowal of a few vivacious boxes en the ear. Happily there are prizes even in this queer little lottery. M. Halevy was one evening seated in the private room of the late Nester Reuqueplan, who was then director of the opera in Paris. Rouque Reuque plan was carelessly turning ever some old papers when he came upon a list of the ballet girls of 1838. On readine it care fully through they found that several of them had geno into the choruses of the Opera Comique, one let furnished lodgings at Mentmartrc, anether had married a stockbroker, a third was the wife of a comic actor. But the last two names which had been written en the faded yellow paper in 1838 belonged, the one te an Eng lish peeress, and the ether te a rich mer cer at Dijon. Somnambulist Click. Almest Incredible Stories Concerning Ills Sleep-WaUriiig. Information from Tvre. N. C. the scene f of the recent somnambulistic murder, is that ever a hundred people assembled at the coroner's inquest and preliminary trial. The body of Sir. Phelps was found lying nearly across the feet of the bed, en the right side, his head en his right arm, with three cuts of an ax, two of which,if net the third, were sufficient te cause instant death, one high enough en the head te reach the brain. The story of Mr. Click was that he dreamed the negrees had entered the store, as anticipated by himself and Mr. Phelps. Then followed, according te his recollection, a bloody and terrible fight. When he awake; he was fleeing down the stairs, and, gradually recover ing consciousness, he returned te the room where he and Phelps had been sleep ing, and realized at a glance the full horror of his deed. He at once fled screaming te the house of Mr. Grub, near by, and was met by that gentleman, who was aroused by his cries. Mr. Grub said his lamentations were heart, .rending, and that he told him at once that he had killed his best friend in his sleep. The alarm seen became general, and the neighbors collected from all quarters. They all testified that Click exhibited his regret in a most violent man ner, and finally became se exhausted tfiat he bad te be carried home. It was proved by both state and defendant's witnesses that Click was a somnambulist and had frequently injured his own person by jump ing from the house window, sometimes through the glass from the second-story, cutting himself considerable He has also been known te get up and cheke some of tne tamiiy, saying that the bears in Texas were after him, and then run a quarter or a half mile down near the river and wake te find himself alone. When he went visiting he requested his neighbors te tie him, which tbey did. Last week he went te sleep in the room where his dead uncle lay a cerpse. He suddenly arose with ter ter rible expressions of fear and started te seize bis dead uncle. His sister and a gentleman caught him, get him awake and he went back te bed. Many ether in stances were given. The court being satis lied from the evidence that the prisoner was net acceuntable for his actions while asleep, pronounced the evidence insuffi cient, whereupon Mr. Cliek returned te his home.
