A CLERGYMAN'S SUICIDE.

On Monday last R. G. Tuelff, aged thirty-six
years, native of Siiesia, committed
suicide by strangling himself with a cord in
his bed room at the Summit Heuse, New
Yerk. He has been a clergyman and re
ceived his ministerial education at, the
theological seminary of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, where
he was a room mate of Rev. II. B.
Stredach, pastor of St. Paul's German
Lutheran Church, Norristown, formerly of
Reading. Mr. Stredach is quoted by the
Norristown Herald assaying that he was
remarkably lazy and slovenly in his habits,
and that he failed te distinguish himself
as a student. But he was able te repeat
Greek, Latin and Hebrew authors by the
page, in their native tongues, that being
part of an education received in Germany
during his boyhood. He was finally or
dained by the New Yerk ministerium aud
given a congregation en the strength
of papers which he brought from Ger
many rather than en his record in the
Seminary. He was deposed from the
pastorate net long afterwards ou account
of a scandal involving one of his female
acquaintances. After his deposition he
wrote Mr. Stredach a long letter, giving an
account of his prospects and expressing
pleasure that he had liccn expelled from
the pulpit where he was obliged te preach
doctrines iu which he did net believe. Hav
ing thus paved the way, he followed it up
with a second letter containing a net
wholly unexpected request for a lean of
ten dollars.
He found employment as teacher in Mr.
KeclTs school, in Dclanccy street, New
Yerk, aud was with him five years. Dur
ing this time he behaved well, but in the
spring of 1870 he inherited a legacy of
SeUU, went en a debauch, and by the mid
dle of May was penniless. William Bayr Bayr
heff, apothecary, of Ne. 177 Allen street,
consented te employ him and te teach him
the business. He worked here until last
February, when he was discharged for in
temperance, lie then lived at Ne. 198
Chrystic street. A few days after Tuelff
left Mr. liayrhefl he attempted suicide by
:utting the arteries of his left wrist. He
was scut te the German hospital, and
when he was well the authorities of the
institution found employment for him iu a
Russian bathing establishment. He re
mained there only a few weeks, ami be
came a confirmed vagrant. Iu his pockets
were found $19, which, il is believed, he
had just received from home, aud a note
saying that he had book Ne. 47e,(KS0 en
the Bowery savings bank. Then it was
ascertained that he drew out a few dollars
which were te his credit last January. It
is bclfcvcd that friends will reclaim his
body at the morgue.
