The Scheel Beard held an adjourned meet
ing in the efiicc of J. A. Meyers, corner of
oecenu and Locust streets, last evening,
ffer the adoption of "school readers' for
the coming term. Representatives from
several puhlishingheuses have been in town
for a few days past representing te the
members of the Scheel Heard and a
ethers interested, as well as te any who
may have the least sjieck of influence,
merits of the books the agency of which
rests with them. The Scheel Beard hearing
the praises of all books brought te their
notice sounded en all sides were no doubt
placed in a sort of quandary, te get out

carried. Things new rest just where they
were six months age and here they will
probably continue te rest until the next
school term.
The question of re-establishing the
teachers' district institute also came up,
and by the adoption of a resolution was
made one of the facts of the next school
term, with the understanding that the in
stitute is te be held semi-monthly. The

I lowed a specified amount for each meeting
of the institute at which they are present.
The summer vacation will be ovcrbcfeic
the school heard will have again met, un
less, indeed, business of special import
ance calls the members together in the in
tervening time.
Artitnid Town.
Stephen J. Younger, 2d sergeant of Ce.
II., of this place, has been appointed color
sergeant of the 11th Kegt., X. O. Pa., by
Cel. Kupcrl, the regiment commander, the
appeiument te dale from Aug. 11, 1SS0.
This appointment, creates a vacancy in the
line of sergeants of Ce. II. Sergeant
Younger wasilse by special elder appoint
ed acting sergeant major of the same regi
ment. The regular monthly meeting of Colum
bia town council was held last evening in
council uhamijcr of the ejtcra house.
Fruit thieves are much complained of
about Sixth and Walnut streets and fur
ther up. The inhabitants of the locality
premise te make it warm for the guilty
mostly youngsters, if they succeed in cap
hiring them.
I. I). Mishler will bring" "Jehn Jack"
te Columbia en August 'list. This is the
tirst opera house engagement of the sea
son. Mishler has several ethers te fellow.
Mr. I. C. (Silt has invited his friends
of the Columbia Secial club te meet him
en Monday evening next, in the club room,
and there participate with him in the cele
bration of the -- anniversary of his biith.
There will no doubt be a large attendance
en the occasion. That the members of the
club will de justice te the viands te be
spread before them is net doubted by
these who knew them.
The llcvs. Charles Winbigler and J. W.
Deshong, pastor and ex-pastor of the
Church of Ced, arc in attendance at the
Cumberland county campinecting. Tlieie
will be no services, ether than the prayer
. meetings, in the church te-morrow.

place, is picnicking te-day at Heise's
weeds.
Plover arc new te be seen about here in
right geed numbers. Several of the Col
umbia sportsmen have been banging away
at the biul lately. Thirty-four were
brought into town by a party of four a
few days age.
Sheriff Strinu was in town yesterday.
An excursion train te Atlantic City and
Cape May left the Heading & Columbia
depot this morning.
A child of T. S. While, the tinner, is
new lying seriously ill with diphtheria.
INCENDIAKISM.
An Olil Dwelling Heuse Hurtled.
This morning shortly after 2 o'clock a
one-story weathcrbearded leg house, be
longing te Jeseph White, and situated en
Church street, next deer below the Aiucii
can Fire Engine house, was set en lire and
dam-iged se badly that it will have te be
pulled down. The house w:is uu
occupied at the time, Mrs. Gardner
(widow of Wm. Gardner) and her
family having removed from it a few
days age. The incendiary's torch was
applied inside one of the back windows,
and the back pait of the building, there
fore, suffered much mere than the front.
The fiiemcn were ery slew in getting
water upon the llamcs, and after the water
was applied two sections of the Cleveland
company's hose burst causing further
delay in extinguishing the fire. Chief
Engineer Fordney being absent from the
city, Assistant Engineer Arneld had
charge at the fire. He suggests that as
the time for which the Cleveland
company guaranteed the hose has net yet
expired, the city councils should see that
the company makes ge.xl its guarantee.
The burnt building was an old one of no
ureal value. The less will net probably
be mere than $100 or i'HW, en which there
is n insurance.
It is rumored that one of the neighheis

chapters. The communion was adminis

In the afternoon Itev. Heffman, led the
missionary prayer meeting and a collection
of Se!! was taken up for inissieuaiy pur
poses. Itev. Jes. Specht preached at :

In the evening Itev. F. Scachrist preached
an effective and earnest sermon from
i'salm exxvi, G v. At 0 p. m. the mem
hers of the campineeling formed a cicle and
the usual geed-by was given It was a
happy occasion te all present, and geed
order was observed. There was a very
large attendance. This ends the meeting,
te commence again next Wednesday at
Sinking Spring.
Democratic Heading iteinn.
The lower story of the Mishler building,
in the southeast angle of Centre Square,
having been fitted up as a leading room for
the Democratic party in this city, and fur
nished With tables, chairs, etc., te accom
modate it te this purpose, will henceforth
be open during every day and evening
until the end of the campaign. The Phila
delphia Time1, Recerd, Chronicle-Herald.
Xew ;Yerk World and Sun and all the
leading Democratic papers of Pennsylva
nia will be found en file, and from time te
time special campaign publications, por
traits, campaign songs, speeches, etc., will
be furnished te visitors. Open te all.
The spacious open platform at the same
place has been fitted up for public meetings
and ether parts of the bailing are furnished
for committee rooms, storage rooms and
similar purposes. The list of committee and
club meetings will be found in our political
bulletin.
Feast el the Assumption.
In St. Mary's Catholic church, te-morrow,
there will be low mass at (H and 8 a.
in., and at 10 o'clock a solemn high mass
will be celebrated. At 7 p. in. there will
be vespers and a precession of the sodali
ty. As stated yesterday, Father Wood Weed
man, a son of the superintendent of the
Fulton mill, a member of the pastoral or
der of priests (composed entirely of con
verts te Catholicism), an eloquent young
priest, will preach at this service. Father
iilakc, O. S. A., of Villa Neva, will also
take part in the services,

Business Transacted This Morning.
This morning court met at 10 o'clock,
for the llrst time in several weeks. Beth
judges were en the bench.

Judge Patterson delivered an opinion in
the following case :
C. A. Greene, charged with practicing
medicine without a license. Demurrer te
indictment. Demurrer overruled and in
dictment sustained.

In the ease of Mary Ann Kreidcr, who
was .allowed $2 per week alimony pending
the suit of her husband, Ames Kreider, for
di voice, the allowance new being due and
unpaid amounting te $10, a rule was grant
ed te show cause why an attachment
should net lie issued against her husband
te compel a compliance with the court's
order.
The license of Aldus Fulmcr, formerly
el Hetel rranke, was transferred te Jehn
Hess.
The license of Jehn Itehrer, of the
Seventh ward, this city, was transferred te
Jehn Bender.
Divorces.
The following persons were divorced by
the court :
Gottlieb I'faff, of this city, from his wife
Christiana Pfaff ; grounds, desertion.
Mary A. Miller, of this city, from her
husband, Benjamin E. Millet ; grounds,
desertion.
Sarah A. Shank, of Elizabethtown, fiem
her husband, Ebenezcr Shank ; grounds,
de.-ertien.
Habeas Corpus Vase..
In court this alternoena habeas corpus
case was heard bv the judges. Dera Dit-
maii and Casper Ditmau are the names of
a wife and her husband. The former re
sides in this city and the latter at Bird-in-
llaud. They have six children, five of
whom are with the mother in this city and
one with the father. The husband desired
te get possession of the two youngest chil
dren, and for that reason his wife was
summoned te bring the children intoceurt.
Casper stated that he and his wife have
been separated for ever a'car, he has
furnished money for and always was
willing te live with her, but hhc
refused te live with him. Mrs. Dittman
stated that her husband told her te leave
the home at Bird -in-Hand ; treated her
and the family cruelly, especially when
drunk ; she came te live in the eity and he
supported her for about a year ; ler four
months she and the children have been
supporting themselves and paying the
house rent. Twe ether witnesses were
called te testify te Dittman's cruel treat
ment of his wife.
In rebuttal witnesses were called te show
that Dittman did net treat his family badly,
that he provided for them, and that he is a
hard working man.
The Court agreed te allow the children
te remain with their mother.

Ready for In-
Superintendent Kitelt completed some
days age the repairs which have been mak
ing for some time past te the bottom
and inside of the north wall of the cast
city reservoir, and the brick-layers finished
the work te-day. The work, which was
of very considerable magnitude, has been
very thoroughly done, and it is confidently
believed that the cast basin, which has al
ways been leaky and a frequent source of
expense te tnc city, is new perfectly water
light and will remain se for years te come.
The .superintendent will make te councils a
detailed report of the work, and will ask
i councils te visit and inspect the basin some
! day next week, before the water shall be
' turned into it.

The Union fire company have their flag
dying te-day in honor of the 120th anni
versary of the company. The supper
takes place te-night at the Stevens house.
The guests who have been invited will
meet at the mayor s'ollice at f) o'clock,and
the honorary and active members of the
company will meet at the engine house at
the same hour, and headed by Clcmmcns'
city band, will proceed te the mayor's office
and escort the guests te the Stevens house.
Lamp I'est Broken.
This morning a four mule team belong
ing te a man named Miller took fright in
rear of the central markets, and running
the wagon te which they were attached
against the iron lamp pest comer of Grant
and Market streets, snapped it off close
te the ground as though it had been a
pipe stem. The gas pipe in the interior of
the lamp pest, was also broken off, and
for a short lime there was a free flew of

A Slight Kali read Wreck.
Last night about 10 o'clock the axle of
the tank attached te the locomotive '105 en
the Pennsylvania railroad, breke just in
rear of the freight depot, this city, and
the tank was thrown from the track,
blocking the read for some time. The
Cincinnati express cast was detained for
ten or fifteen minutes and a stock train, te
which the disabled engine was attached,
was detained for some hours.

Yotenlay afternoon a little child of

Mrs. Catharine Petcrman, widow of the
late Geerge Pctermau, is in need of as

Geerge Marshall and wife and "W. O.
Marshall left for Chicago today, ever the
V. It. It., and Charles Shultz, Jehn Cope Cepe
land, Jehn Carter and several ethers went
by Heading. Several gentlemen will go
te-night, but the largest number will go
te-morrow at 11 o'clock.
A Failure.
On Thursday evening the Republicans
of the Eighth ward met at Cenrad KempFs
saloon for the purpose of organizing a
DcGeljer club. Six or sevea men were
present, including the best workers, and
nothing was done.

van. superintendent of a New Yerk found feund
liug asylum, has been arrested here for
felonious assault ou Julia Felix, aged nine
years. O'SulIivan was' taking the girl
from Abbottstown, Pennsylvania, te the
asylum in New Yerk, but instead of pro
ceeding direct te the latter place, he took
her te Hanover, Pennsylvania, where they
stayed at a hotel all night and thou came'
en te Baltimore. The girl's conduct be
traying fears of O'SulIivan attracted atten
tien here and he was arrested when the
girl told the foregoing story. The court
discharged him because the bfTence was net
committed in Maryland, but he was imme
diately rearrested ami is new held for a
requisition from the authorities of Penn
sylvania. Mr. Themas Powell, special de
tective from Yerk county, Pa., came te
Baltimore last night and had a consultation
with Marshal Gray in reference te the case
Mr. Powell is here by instructions of Dis
trict Attorney Jehn W. Heller.

terday morning Charles Richmond, a con

shot and killed his wife, and immediately

It is reported in Vienna from Bucharest,

artillery and ambulances arrived at Galatz
en Saturday for Bulgaria, and the Russians

The Reading railroad iron bridge across
the canal near the Ilarrisburg depot, broke
down this afternoon while a heavy coal
train was passing ever it. About twenty
cars were wrecked. Nobody was hurt but
several empleyes made narrow escapes.
