DISCONTENT.
A dozen tadpoles wriggled out
Te view the prospect round about.
And see the elder frogs, no doubt
Ambitious little tadpoles.
They reamed among the rushes green
They saw the lillics o'er them lean ;
Their hearts were gladdened by the scene
Admiring little tadpoles.
A greater wonder was te come ;
They heard an old lreg say "jug rum "
Such eloquence It struck them dumb
These silly little tadpoles.
" Oh ! could we only speak like that.
And sit upon a stone se fiat!"
Their yearning hearts beat pIM-pat
They sighed that they were tadpoles.
" It's eh ! te wear a coat se fine
And with thcae elder frogs te shine !
I wish their nappy let were mine,"
Said every little tadpole.
Then buck again, with frowns and sigh;',
And doubtless very watery eyes,
Kach te his native mud bank hies
A dozen humbled tadpoles.
They could net knew the let el frogs
Who sun themselves en lazy legs,
Fated te utter their " her-chegs "
These unsuspecting tadpoles.
They ilid net knew that sticks and stones
Where hurled at frogs te break their bones
Or much less sad had been the tones
Of all these little tadpoles.
Hut let me cut this tale oil here,
As Time cut theiiv. The day drew near.
And lull-grown lregs they all appear,
Ne longer little tadpoles.
And arc they happy 1 Ah ! they sigh
That profitless their youth went by.
When tadpoles ask them, they reply ;

Slate Fair at Philadelphia.
Oti Monday, September (itli, the Twenty
seventh Annual Exhibition of the Penn
sylvania State Agricultural Society will
open at the Main Building, Centennial
(rounds, Fairineuut Park, Philadelphia,
and continue eighteen days, closing en
Saturday. September 25lh. The Jast week
of which period, viz., from September 20th
te 25th, will be devoted te the International
Shew of Sheep, "Weel and Weel Products,
for which purpose the liberal sum of $8,u00
in ca'di has been appropriated. During
this week, however, all ether exhibits,
with (lie exception of horses, cattle, swine
and poultry will remain en display.
Frem present indications this exhibition
of the society will be the largest, grandest
and most varied that has ever becu held
by any state society, and will be second in
numbers and merit only te the ever ever
mcmemblc International Exhibition, held
at the same place during the Centennial
year. The premium list, which can be ob
tained from the eiliccrs of the society, at
their eHiec, northwest corner Tenth and
Chestnut streets, Philadelphia, is the most
complete and thorough that lias ever been
presented by any similar organization, and
offers for competition in the live stock
class alone the handsome sum of $21,315.
In the dairy, fruit, vegetable and lleral de
partments, the further sum of $0,000 is
added, besides a large number of elegant
and valuable geld, silver and bronze
medals, whose intrinsic value will aggre
gate the entire sum of mere than $10,000
in actual cash.
The display will include a large number
of imported, thoroughbred, line bred and
draught horses; herds of Short Hern,
Deven, Ilelstein, Jersey and Guernsey cat
tle ; the choicest breeds of sheep, swine,
etc, together with a mechanical, vegetable
and manufacturing collection seldom, if
ever, brought together in any community.
Excellent, and commodious stabling has
been prcpaied within the building for
horses and horned cattle, and a suitable
space assigned en the grounds adjacent for
the accommodation of swine. The ma
chinery, dairy, fruit, floral ami domestic
departments are all provided under cover,
and will undoubtedly prove attractive ami
instructive features of the fair. A space
has also been assigned for the exercise and
display of all the entries in the live stock
classes, but no racing will be permitted.
Green fowl will be supplied all the milch
cows en exhibition, and hay and straw
furnished all entries gratis.
Excursion tickets will be furnished by
all the railroads centring at Philadelphia,
and all articles intended for exhibition car
ried en liberal terms,
Our Itig Wheat Crep.
A Tremendous Yield but no Larccr than Can
be Used.

Our last crop of wheat was Mippesed te
be somewhere about -150,000 bushels (it is
ridiculous te attempt te feet up within
1,000 bushels.) We had 30,000,000 of the
old crop left ever a year age, against 10,
000,000 bushels new, the old wheat bring
much mere closely drained from the farm
new than then. That is, the people of the
United States have within twelve meqgk?-
consumed and sold some 470,000,000
bushels, and have practically none left te
compete with the wheat of the new crop.
It is exceedingly doubtful if that new ciep
will feet up mere than 130,000,000 bushels,
and if it should the everplus will net be a
terrible burden te the people obliged te
held it, if they should be obliged te held it
ever into another crop year. Wc have net
at present any geed reason te expect
that the demauds of Europe upon
the United States for bread, will
be much, if any, smaller than a
year age. There is net; therefore, any
present ground ler alarm in legard te a
superabundance of wheat. There is plenty
of it; enough te kill the ambitious of these
who would like te sec Europe forced te
pay mere than fifty shillings a quarter for
it ; net enough te warrant the bearing of
it te a point which will net pay for the cost
of producing it. The people who are croak creak
ing about ever production de the same
thing every year. Twelve months age
they said we had some 80,000,000 bushels
mere tliau we could get rid of. They mis
calculated the facts in the case te the ex
tent of 200,000,000 bushels. That is enough
te show that they could net then grasp
the situation, and there is no reason te
think that they are any mere competent
new. Fortunately their vaticinatiens de
net seriously affect the matter. The wheat
gees forward while statisticians are prev
ing that there is no place for it te go, just
as serenely as the moon rolled en when
the deg was baying at it.
