THE LOCAL CAMPAIGN.
Tlie Republican Organ's Disgrace.
At last, after a world of trouble and
nearly a week's work, the Garfield folks of
the Eighth ward get their patched peic te i
4 stand en its pins fate Saturday afternoon,
" . .. i . i tr ;f ,i nf-
Their repeated failures te get it up at
tracted te the scene quite a crewu 01 peo pee peo
pleeostly Democrats (for Republicans
arc very scarce in that neighborhood) and
many a geed-natured joke was cracked at
the expense of the unfortunate fel
lows who had the job in charge.
These sallies of humor were generally
taken as they were given goed-naturedly ;
but one peer imbecile, a scribbler for the
Examiner, (a sheet that begs there may be
no "mud-throwing" during the pending
camjiaign) became se wrethy at a party of
boys who persisted in cheering for Han
cock that he fairly foamed at the nleulh,
and looked as though he would like te cat
the offending youngsters. He was heard
te express the pious wish that if the pole
should fall down he hoped it would crush
half of Ihe young copperheads te death
there wcre a damned sight tee
many of them anyhow ! and then te give
further vent te his bile he penned a lying
and scurrilous article for the Examiner,
which appeared in the leeal department of
that paper Saturday, marked with a star
(). The star may mean that the article
was paid for, or, mere likely, that the re
porters scorned te father it, and affixed the
advertising mark te it te let the reader
knew it was net theirs. llelew we repro
duce a part of it, as a specimen of Repub
lican litcratmc, and as a sample of the
esteem in which that party held irtiite
labeuring men and their families.
The attempt te raise a Republican pole
in the Eighth ward was somewhat of a
failure. - :? The confederates
were there in great numbers, genuine
rebels, unwashed, unkempt, lilthy and
' chewing " t.crap.s. Fat and greasy
women with h ilc breeds of dirty brats,
were a living proof that there is a connect
ing link between Darwin and his ape. The
men (l)cinecrai.sj filled the air with oaths,
curses and foul l.i.iguage in general and
the wives of the.sj specimens of the con
federacy cheered liie men en with language
that would disgrace any one.
A few mere slanders like these en the
sturdy and unpurchasahlc Democracy of
the Eighth waid is all that is wanted te
te run the Democratic majority up te a
round (500.
There is likely te be another attempt
made'soeu te raise a Radical pole in this city,
as Geerge Kline, Jehn Deebler and ether
best workers were at work ycxlcrdtiy cut
ting one in M"ileys weeds, near Willow
Street.
Ninth Ward .Juniors.
The junior Democrats of the Ninth waul
erected en Saturday evening a fine Han
cock hickory, at the corner of North Mul
berry and .lames si root, immediately oppo
site the one erected mine time age by the
seniors. A large cre'vd was in attendance
and cheer upon cheer was given for Han
cock, English and Democracy. The pole
stands 85 feet, in height and near the top
efil is placed a large ''hand,'' with an in
dex linger extended and pointing directly
te the game cock that sits high among the
bianchcs of the ether pole.
The junior club of the Seventh ward will
erect a Hancock pole at Middle and Seuth
Duke streets this evening.
THE CITY GHKENISACKi'.R:'.
.lehn Kvan. Sr.. for Assembly.
At a meeting of the city executive coni ceni
mittee of the National Greenback La.ier
party, held en Saturday evening, Mr. Jehn
Evans, sr., of the Ninth ward, was unani
mously chosen the candidate of the parly
for assembly from the city district.
The following resolution was unani
mously adopted : " Resolved : That the
candidate this day nominated be requested
te take means te secure joint discussions
of the platform and principles of the sev
eral parties with the Democratic and Re
publican candidates."'

About Mad PegH.
Ever since the dreadful case of hydro
phobia resulting in the death of the little
daughter of Jehn W. Beeth, there has
been a great deal of anxiety and fear
among our townspeople lest ether cases
may occur. It is known that several dogs,
exhibiting symptoms of hydrophobia, have
been seen en the streets and liave bitten
ether dogs. Seme of these have been
killed but ethers have net. The mayor's
proclamation, ordering all dogs te be
muzzled or penned up until the 1st of Sep
tember, has been very generally observed,
but this does net allay the fear of the people.
The 1st of September will seen be here, and
the dogs, some of which are known te have
been bitten, will be again turned loose, and
there is no assurance that some of them
may net go mad. It may w.'cin cruel te
kill a pet deg that has been bitten, but $
is still mere cruel te have men, women and
children subjected te the risk of dying
such a dreadful death as that of peer little
Annie Beeth.
"Sheet the deg."
Declines the Ofllce.
Geerge Smith wishes us te state that he
declines the office of deg-catcher. The
position was tendered him without auy
solicitation en his part. Besides, he is a
trustee of A. M. E. church, and he thinks
the efliccs of trustee and deg-catcher are
incem pat able. Further, Geerge is such a
tender hearted man that he could never
assist in drowning innocent puppies that
never did him or anybody else any harm.
Geerge's declination is accepted. The
position is open for some hard-hearted fe'J

Heat and Sicklies.
During the het and sultry weather an un
usual amount of sickness prevails in every,
community, especially among females and
children, caused by the fermenting ni!a-ina
gas or nitrogenous matter lleatlng in the air,
arising from decaying vegetation. This hud
air atlects everything we eat, and engenders
inita semi-fermentation, which, when taken
in the system is like leaven, and operates en
the whole, starting in the bowels and seen pro
ducing a violent fermentation, causing diar diar
reoea and dysentery. It has been found that,
that the use of Specr's old Pert Gmpe Wine of

Cheers for Him and for the Next President.
At Chatauqua this morning hundreds
of persons visited Garfield at his hotel and
shook his hand. In a speech te the assem
blage he commended their efforts in the di
rection of religion ancf said that as this was
a mixed gathering politically he would net
attempt te touch upon contreverted
points.er te make a political speech. While
there might be many present of different
political opinions, he hoped there was net
in that great assemblage, no matter what
his party affiliations, one man who would
net endeavor se te mould our beneficent
institutions as te permit labor te earn its
well-merited leisure. Speaking of the Ju
bilee Singers he said : "I heard yesterday
and last night the 6engs of these who
were lately redeemed from slavery, and I
felt that these tee were one of the great
triumphs of the republic. (Applause.). I
believe in the efficiency of forces that came
down from the ages behind ns, and I wen
dered if the tropical sun had net distilled
its sweetness and if the sorrows of centu
ries of slavery had net distilled its sadness
into voices which were touchingly sweet,
voices te sing the songs of liberty as they
sing them wherever they go." (Applause.)
Three cheers for Gen. Garfield were given,
followed by thrce cheers for the next presi
dent. The visiting party then made its
way through the throng te the beat Iaud
Ianding. Here the jubilee singers repeated
two or three of the songs that the general
had taken the most pleasure in. He
thanked them, and in a tene audible only
te these close by said : 'The eltl prophet
said Ethiopia shall stretch hishandtoGei',
I believe Ged has stretched out his hand
te the children of Ethiopia." (Three cheers
for Garfield.)
At Lakcwoed a stoppage and landing
was made and t'ue party stepped a
few minutes at the Lake View
house Garfield made a few remarks
and the party wa then driven te the sta
tion and started en the train at 9: l."i a. m.
At Cerry a large crowd met the train,
and Garfield again addressed the peo
ple, saying that any man might be
proud te be a citizen of the Keystone
state, but it is a still greater thing te
be a citizen of the whole republic. Step
pages wcre also raatle at Cambridge, Sr.e.
gertewn and Meadville, where the genet al
made brief speeches. At the latter place
the party stepped a half hour for dinner.
