At no former period of the national his
tory hare American farmers had se much
reason te feel proud of the results of their
toil as at the present time. In round
numbers the money value of the exporta
tion of bread stuns alone from this repub
lic, during the fiscal year ending June 30,
I860; appears te be $277,000,000. This,
therefore, is the great leading expert of
the country, far surpassing the highest
aggregate ever received for the cotton
crop, which was 1233,000,000. It is very
true that the year just closed was in many
respects an exceptional one, inconsequence
of the threatened and actual famines in
Europe. France, which usually produces
enough breadstuflfs for her own people and
a surplus for the English markets, was
obliged, during the past fiscal year, te pay
te Uncle Sam $70,000,000 in geld for a
stock of wheat, te avert the danger of
famine in that country. Altogether the
importations of coin and bullion at New
Yerk alone, during that fiscal year, were
ever $85,000,000.
It is very, important, however, that our
readers should observe that this enormous
exportation of breadstuflfs from the United
States has been rendered practicable by the
vast increase of cultivation and produc
tion. Te this result the great railway sys
tem of the country has contributed te an
extent that we can imperfectly express.
Russia, Turkeyand ether countries of the
old world can and de produce large crops
for exportation, but they are deficient
in that all pervading system of
transportation from the interior te
the seaboard, which is the pride and
beast of America. It is well known
that the corn corn crop is a staple pro
duct of all of our states and territories,
except Alaska. But it is net se well known
that wheat also is produced successfully
by the same wide range of country. The
Southern wheat crops, which were net im
portant before the war, have become mere
and mere se of late years, though it is ad
mitted as a matter of course that the
wheat-product is the great staple of the
North and West. As te the ability of our
country te expert such a surplus stock
regularly every year as the breadstuff ship
ment te which we have above referred, we
may remark that the exportation of the
preceding year was valued at $201,000,000 ;
and it is believed that the trade of the
current year can easily be made te reach a
total of at least $250,000,000
In connection with this subject, we are
tempted te ask these persons who depre
cate the enormous increase of our invest
ments in manufacturing pursuits, where
the farmers of the country arc te leek for
profitable mcrkctsif their agriculture is te
be stimulated te such stupendous propor
tions as would be inevitable if the millions
of people in America who are new sus
tained by mining and manufacturing shall
be turned tillers of the soil? We cannot
conceive it pessible for American farm
ing te be increased mere rapid
ly than it is at present without
great injury te the fanners, and
without reducing the farm laborers te a
condition of abject penury, in consequence
of the deficiency of profitable markets for
the crops. Fortunately for the country,
the prevalent sentiment is very decidedly
in favor of building up extensive, prosper
ous and increasing home-markets as the
principal and best reliance efthe American
farmers new and at all times, leaving only
the surplus te be exported te foreign coun
