TIM ExdUac Kxptlimew of an Early Settler
m the tipper Delaware A lrst-clau
Among the many old settlers of the Pike
county hills and glens is an old snn-bnrned
man, who has a little cabin a few reds
back from the regular path te Mount
Union. Visitors here are told that he can
tell many a strange tale about the pioneers
and their history, and here is one that he
gareadayortwe age :
'Yea want a yarn about myself in my
younger days, de you, stranger ? Well,
there's many a one, and tough, tee, I
might tell you. But, seein' you come
from the city, and are eager for semethin'
rather excitin', I will give you an account
of the trouble we had with the bears when
we built the first hotel up here. That was
a geed while age ; I couldn't think of say
ing just hew long. I was a young, strong
chap then, and could lift as heavy a lead
as any of 'em. Seme speculative fellow from
Philadelphia had seen this place around
here, and made up his mind te build a
tavern, and see if he couldn't get a let of
men here te sell fish. The fishur was won
derful in them days. The bears were ter
rible plenty in this neighborhood, although
we had driven 'em away en the Jersey
aide. Yeu see there was no one livin' ever
here then but two old trappers. They had
a nut ngnt ever me nm yenuer, aim uui
far from where the Gap Heuse is new.
The lumber for the tavern was brought
down en rafts, and the first thing we did
was te put up some shanties for us te live
in while we were buildin. The man was
in a tremendous hurry about the thing, and
wanted us te work day and night, if we
could. Se we put up some rough huts,
and made ourselves as comfortable as pos
sible. The trappers were hired, tee, and
they came down from their cabin every
merniu'. Nights they used te go huntiu'
and we had all the bear meat we wanted
Things went en smooth for some days and
besides a bear growl new and then, or a
rattlesnake's call, we didn't hear anything
unusal. We seen get used te the awful
quiet, and didn't think of harm.
"One night 'twas Saturday we went
te sleep very tired. We had worked hard
until abut 10 o'clock, because we had the
next day te rest in. Ten of us slept in
one shanty and five in another. I was
with the five. Just who left the deer
wide open none of us ever found out. We
were all se plaguy sleepy we didn't knew
what was going en. It must have been
seen after midnight that I woke up,
fcelin' as though some one had stuck me
with a knife. I was sittin' straight up en
my bunk (we had straw ticks en the fleer),
and there by my side, with one claw dug
into my arm, was a big black bear. Fer
a minute I was all broken te pieces.
Havin' been se sound asleep and all, I
'spese my wits were kinder scattered.
While I was se confused, I heard some
' one hellerin' for help. I turned, and by
the light of the moon, which was shiniu'
in. I saw Bill Stivers, who had a bunk
next te mine, clasped in the arms of
another big bear. inen l was wide
awake, and gave my hand a twist.
It came se sudden that the cuss
hadn't time te think, and I get my
arm loose. With that I jumped te my
feet and put for my gun. The varmint was
tee quick for me, and grabbed me around
the waist. I tell you, stranger, I thought
thejigwasup. I gave a glance 'round
the room. Bill was en the fleer, and the
bear en top of him. The ether fellers were
awake, and in the deer came another bear.
We all yelled at the top of our voices. Bill
was nearly smothered, but he managed te
scream for a knife. I did the same and
then tried te trip the cuss. He began
squeezing, and I fought like the mischief.
I tell you, it's tough. These critters will
just take the breath out of you in no time
at all. I tripped the cuss somehow and
fell en top. As I fell, I hit him with all
my might between the eyes. It seemed te
stagger him for an instant, and he let up a
little en his held. Quicker'n I've been
talkin', I had squirmed out, and
was kinder tumbling towards the
wall. The varmint was after me
right off, and I couldn't reach my gun.
All I could get was my jack-knife, which
was lyiu' en a box. Before I could get my
arm up with it I was in the chap's claws.
I knew the thing would be ever mighty
quick if something desperate warn't done,
for the critter was madder' n fury. I just
stuck the knife into his heart again and
again. Of course, he had my arms pressed
against my side, and all I could use was
my band. That alone didn't deal very
hard blows, but it was life or eternity with
me, se I did the best. I was wcakenin'
fast, but I kept it up. Pretty quick every
thing began te swim and my power was
gein' fast. I knew that my jack was dein'
some geed, for I could feel the bleed rttn
nin' from the bear. His terrible grip con cen
tinered though, and I could tell that the
last of my foelin' had come. I must have
hollered as loud as I could, for I remember
heann' a sound and words of some kind.
I was sinkin'. when I heard, like a noise
wav off. the report of a cun. On a sec
end I tumbled en the fleer, all in a heap,
and the cuss, lettin' go of me, rolled ever
dead. It was one or them trappers saved
my life."
