LANCASTER DAILY'INTELLIGENCER. JCONDAY AUGUST 2. 1880,
Lancaster intelligencer.
MONDAY EVENING, AUGUST 2, 1880.
Tebacc.
Last Week's New Yeilt Market.
U. S. Tobacco Journal.
With the exception of sales of about 800
cases of '79 Ohie for expert at 7$ te8$
cents, nothing noteworthy occurred. The
market lias taken en a condition of almost
utter stagnation. There is net the least
cvinccmcutef any speculative movement.
The situation is hut natural, and was pre
dicted by the J7. S. Tobacco Journal many
months age. The dead-lock exists and
will last till some of the shrewdest of
the packers or the '79 Pennsylvania crop
sell their packings the first chance they
get. regardless of the investment figures.
Tliiswill take place seen. Most of the
packers of that crop who operate in this
market begin te realize the correctness of
the U. S. Tobacco Journal's predictions,
but they will net acknowledge it publicly,
nor can they as long as they held this
stock. They even continue te pronounce
the predictions and advice of this paper
false, foolish and unwarranted ; but this
deception is practiced te make the neigh
boring holder "stiff ;" te encourage him
te ask a geed profit ; te induce him te re
fuse an offer and thus di ive him into the
arms of the deceiver, who is but tee glad
te unload at even a less. Wc are positive
that after such sales the sellers openly brag
of Wig profit they have made en their sales.
They thereby hope te retain their reputa
tion of being first-class packet's, honest,
shicwd advisers and cxpesers of the false,
foolish and unwarranted predictions of the
IT. A. Tobacco Journal. There was a re
port that Messrs. Bttnzl & Dermitzcr had
offered their packing of '79 Pennsylvania
at 14 cents. The report is denied in tete
as well as the one that Mr. C. II. Spitzner
had sold te a Water street firm 400 cases
of the same class of goods at 15 cents.
Sampling of all kinds of '79 tobacco con
tinues, and the asserting of lets forms al
most the only occupation of packers. The
'79 Connecticut is as yet warm in the cases,
and, of course, appears tender, but other
wise is very premising. The expert sales
of Ohie are already referred te above. Ex Ex
peiteis show some activity in inspecting
samples of new tobacco and in making
offers for suitable parcels. They
are unanimous in the opinion that
had the packers of '79 Pennsylvania
heeded the advice of the U. S. Tobacco
Journal and paid lower figures for the crap
they could have disposed of all the surplus
for expert at a handsome profit. As it is,
they cannot even come up te the expecta
tions of holders of even the poorest of the
crop. The total sales, including these for
exMit, reached about 1200 cases, of which
20U were '78 Pennsylvania running, atlC
cents, reweight, and 180 cases '70 Ohie, at
10 V cents, reweight.
flavana lemaius netivc and sales arc
easy. I Ieldcrs of '79 are jubilant ever the
continued iwer reports regarding the '80
crop and expect geed profits en the invest
ments, an expectation which net alene is
justified by circumstances, but which will
undoubtedly be realized.
