A Depleted by a Yeaag JwHjma Who Ha
Sees for Himself.
A young Trenteninn writes te the Ga
zette from Thomsen colony, near Salina,
Kansas, as fellows :
Having received just new some Tren Tren
eon papers, I was led te contrast my home
here with a home in Trenten, as enjoyed
by the average mechanic, and concluded
that a few lines en the subject might be
useful te some who are thinking of the
West,as I did, as a desirable location for a
home. I came here in March last with
ethers te work co-operatively en a section of
geed land, one of the best in the vicinity, and
up te this date have net had any new po
tatoes, cabbage or ethervegetables, except
a few string beans and a very few peas.
We put in 2J acres of potatoes en a very
desirable piece of land, and the probability
is that we shall net obtain the quantity it
took for seed. This county ( Saline ) is
considered one of the best in the state, and
yet fully two-thirds of the settlers, who
are principally Eastern people, would glad
ly sell out and return if they had the op
portunity the writer included. It rained
the morning after my arrival sufficient te
make puddles, and I was assured that that
was the heaviest rain for ever six months.
We have had occasional rains since, but
none te soak the ground ever two or three
inches deep. The result is, that the plants
that came up vigorously have remained
stunted and worthless, or have died off.
The problem is, hew te subsist through
the winter and take the risk of another
season like it, or hew te get back te for
mer scenes and privileges and thrift, with
pleasant surroundings of social and domes
tic comforts. The land we occupy is, te
my thinking, as goea as anyueuy ceuia
desiic, and holds moisture te a wonderful
degree, ethcrwihc farmers could net sub
sist at all. Hut think of being without
fiuit almost altogether, and next te no
vegetables through the heated term and
that means a thermometer in the nineties
in the shade through June, and about 100
through July. It was 104 when we went
te Sunday school, one and half miles dis
tant; it showed 100 this after
noon in the house. I saw in one of
the issues of your paper that one of
our winds had reached you, and caused
some commotion. Residents here smile at
such reports, for that is se common here ;
people have te go some time te hunt
wagons and movable property of similar
nature, that the wind had transferred te
ether farms. Insect life is abundant aud
in variety wonderful. Snakes are plenty
loe, and in variety. I killed one near the
deer of the house a few weeks age, and
yesterday our youngest girl told us
that she saw one in the bedroom.
I found the striped creeper,
behind a trunk, te be about four
feet long, and seen despatched it, as I
have a geed many ethers since coming here
The absence of trees is a great drawback,
lumber being very high, $25 per 1,000 feet
and upwards ; no shade, no shelter, and no
fence until grown, for the average settler
cannot afl'eid te pay for it. All the diffi
culties incident te a new country would,
in a comparatively few years, be overcome
here, if we could depend upon mere fre
quent rains ; but as it is, the dryness facili
tates the increase of the endless variety of
bugs and ether insects ; and grasshoppers;
why, if I were te tell the size of some I
have seen, my word would be doubted they
are se very large.
A Foel Unco Mere.
" Fer ten years ray wife was confined te her
bed with Midi a complication el ailments that
no doctor cetilil tell what was the matter or
cure her, anil I used ii) a small fortune in
humbug Mull. Six months age I saw II. S. flag
witli Hep Kilters en it, and 1 thought 1 would
be a loel once mere. I tried it, but my felly
proved te be wi-clem. Twe bottles cured her,
hii ue- unwell and strong as any man's
wife, and it ce-t meenlv two dollars. Such

DR. GREENE
Is exceedingly happy te announce te his nu
merous friends that his wife and self have
safely returned from nearly a seven weeks'
tourthreughaportlonof nlnestatcs.ridingnud
sailing nearly 3,000 miles. Dr. Greene is new
ready te help all sick persons te regain their
health. His attendant says in one week of his
absence 107 patients called te see him at his
offices. The following appeared in the Col
umbia Courant of June 17, 1880:
FROM THE BRINK OF THE (JR.VVE.
As nearly everybody in Columbia knows
Harry Leng has net for two years past been ex
pected te live from one week te the
ether, nearly all of which time he
has been iu bed or prepped up in an
arm chair. During this time he has taken
medicine enough te kill a dozen people
pounds et pills and powders and barrels of
liquids, Mr. Wm. Paxson, and ethers who had
been looking after the wants of Mr. Leng, pre
vailed upon him te try Dr. C. A. Greene, of
Lancaster, and I am pleased te say the eflect
of Dr. Greene's treatment Is magical. The
sick man Is new almost like one raised from
the grave. He is new out visiting friends, and
a few days age was in Lancaster city te offer
congratulations te Dr. Greene in peiben. Well !
well ! ! Wonders never cease. S. S.
