LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. FRIDAY JULY SO. 1880.

FRIDAY EVENING, JULY 30, 1880.
MEDICAL.
A Native Laacasterian.
Cel. Jne.W. Ferney having been applied
te for some information regarding Hen.
Jehn W. Davis, a native Pennsylvania who
arose te public distinction says of him in
this week's Progress :
Jehn W. Davis was born in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, and this is my recollection
of him. and I knew him well. After com
pleting his medical studies in Baltimore,
in 1821, at the medical college there, he
emigrated in 182:1 te Indiana. He was
in the legislature of tliat state be
fore and after his service in congress, and
was speaker in the lower house of the leg
islature, and was a commissioner te make
peace with the Indians. He was in Con Cen
Jrmss from 1833 te 1837. from 1839 te 1841,
and from 1843 te 1847, and was speaker of
the Heuse of Kcpresentativcs during tne
Twenty-ninth Congress. He was minister
te China iu 1848, and subsequently gov
ernor of the territory of Oregon. He was
also president of the Baltimore Dem
ocratic national convention that nom
inated Franklin Pierce for president.
Mv acquaintance with Mr. Uavis was
most agreeable. His personal appearance
was impressive, his address easy, ana nis
information copious. I am in hopes that
this reference may invite mere facts as te
his life. Such men are tee rare te be for
gotten. J. "W. Davis was a Democrat, but
he belonged te a school that did net leek
te government as a means te make
money. The Whigs of his day, like the
Democrats, were honest men personally.
The leaders of parlies were patriots, net
politicians. He was reared in the days of
the Bentons, Silas Wrights, and Nathaniel
Macons. and his adversaries were Whigs
like Clay, Hammend and Jehn Sargeant.
statesmen who lived like gentlemen and
died peer, because they spent their own
money, and never touched a government
dollar unless they earned it i.i their salaries
as congressmen.
There is a general complaint that wlille
prices of commodities have- increased in seine
cacs lllly percent., ast" bave net ail van ecu
nnywhcic near in tin name proportion. We
knew or no complaint in the shape era cough,
cold, f-ere threat, rhciiniall-.ni or neureglia
that Dr. Themas' Eclectic Oil will net immedi
