I am spending a few weeks in the beau
tiful valley of the Juniata, and making fre
quent rides erer the bills and among the
old-fashioned Dutch farmers of this (Per
ry) and the adjoining county of Juniata ;
solid, wealthy, unprogressive as they were
an hundred years age. Many of them
still live in their hewed log-beuses, net
half as large, handsome, airy or comfort
able as their barns, which I have named
" agricultural cettaces. "
Nearlv all the orchards upon these old
farms arc of the most unimproved sorts of
apples and bcedhng peaches of late ripen
ing kinds. Only new and then a man
seems te have thought of trying experi
ments in growing better sorts, or mere
than was wanted for family use. The
people arc farmers in strietest sense. Gar
dening and fruit culture are occult
sciences. But, a new light is dawning in
this valley; an experiment is in
progress which proves that these rough
mountain sides are nature's chosen spots
for orchards ; that here the cultivators of
peaches in Jersey, Delaware and Maryland
mav renew their work when it fails in
these states, for here is an abundance of
cheap land, of little value for grain culti
vation, yet excellent for orchards. This
has been lately proved in several instances
and different localities, but most extensive
ly en the south bank of the Juniata river,
in Juniata county, about one hundred and
forty-four miles from Philadelphia, uear a
station called Thompsontown. There, if
the traveler going west en the Pennsylva
nia railway will leek out south and up the
steep hill side, he will see the main part of
an orchard efl5,500 peach trees, and 9,000
Siberian crab apple trees. And if he should
htep and "walk or ndcj through the or
chard, as I did te-day, and find one dead
or diseased tree, he will find mere than I
could ; although I was told by Mr. Tayler
the foreman, that he did leso ene tree in
the section where we were then.
" And bow many trees are in this sec
tion?" " Six thousand."
If a like result can be found anywhere
else en earth I should like te be informed,
that I might make ai.ethcr pilgrimage of
a thousand mi les te see it, as I have seen
this, the most healthy, thrifty, most prom prem
ising young orchard I have ever seen in
all my extensive journeys through the
United States and Canada. Tet most of
the land is unfit for any ether cultivation,
and a considerable portion of the ground
has never been ploughed, because se steep
and se full of stones and roots. In this re
spect it lcmindcd me of seme of the vine
yards of Pleasant Valley, N. Y., it being
often difficult te get dirt enough te make ft
geed loe.se bed for the roots.
There is another remarkable feature
about this extensive orchard which is in
dicative of the character of the owner.
Netwithstanding.au the natural obstaelcs
every trce has been se exactly set in right
anglcd.lincs that the transverse rows appear
as straight as these en the horizontal and
vertical lines. Thus, when furrows can
be ploughed at all, they can be run six
ways among the trees, which are set 15
feet apart for peaches and quinces and 20
feet for apples. Te accomplish this re
markable result of straight rows and exact
distances required many a hard day's work
rcmeviug stumps and stones and filling up
holes. New the beauty of the work fully
repays the extra cost. It is, however,
costly work te prepare the steep hillsides
by hand labor, for the largest part of the
timber trees had been cut off years age,
leaving a thicket of brushwood. An at
tempt is being made te utilize the brush
by-cutting it in a machine like a straw cut
ter and sending the product te market for
kindling coal fires. As the roots in the
ground continue te send up sprouts, whieh
must be repeatedly mewed, the proprietor
wants te knew hew te get them out with
out tee much expense of hand labor. Who
can tell him the best way ? Can he fix a
stout capstan at suitable points at the bot
tom of the slepn and carry a wire rope and
grappling iron up the hill te the roots and
pull them out by mule or ex-power ? I
have se advised.
The first section of peach trees was
planted in 1875. and first full crop was be
ing gathered te-day, the varieties Craw
ford's Early (white), of fair size and geed
llaver ; and Beatrice, a small, red blush,
early peach, very delicious. The Phila
delphia market being overstocked, it does
net pay te ship ; se a drying house has
been hastily erected, and a het-air dryer,
capable of passing sixty bushels a day,
put in operation. The peaches are peeled
by hand machines of a recently improved
pattern, which de geed work rapidly. By
drying the fruit the seeds are saved for
the nursery, for there are many acres of
orchards yet te be planted. The trees which
come into bearing next year will produce
fruit from early hr July till late frost. It
is probable that all of the improved
methods of putting up the ripe fruit will
be adopted, instead of marketing it fresh ;
owing te the long transportation and risk.
There are 444 acres in the tract, and with
the exception of a narrow strip along the
river, part of which is already occupied by
wagon read and railway, the whole is the
northern slope of a high hill, and is un
doubtedly a most favorable location for an
orchard : and fortunately it is owned by a
gent'emin who i&net only able but will
ing te devete the immense energy and
money necessary te preve te a thousand
ether owners of similar mountain land
that it is net worthless for cultivation, as
has been often declared, se that it has
often sold only for its value for mining or
timber.

son who has read thus far about the oper
ations of the owner of this mammoth en
terprise crying out, "Who is he? Yeu
haven't told us his name !" I knew it ;
and it required considerable argumunt te
get his consent that I might give it ; for he
aid net wish te have it appear as though
he were boasting of what he had done.

give his name, and then no ene will doubt
what I have said, who happens te remem
ber during the past half century

born upon the banks of the Connecticut
river, ten miles below Middletewa. If you
are curious te knew wheu, you will find
"Hczekiah Bradford " upon the baptis
mal register somewhere in that vicinity.
I shall net tell exactly when or where the
entry was made. But I will say that many
men of his ace prefer rest rather than such
untiring labor as he puts into this enter
prise, while at thejsame time he conduets his
city business. Let us all wish eminent sue
cess te.the Bradferdjfmit farm, and that the
success of this experiment may be the in
centive te many men te improve the wa3te
lands of Pennsylvania mountain counties.
A word as te the incentive of Mr. Brad
ford's great work. A,few years age this
tract came into his hands upon the false
representation that it contained valuable
veins of iron ere. He bought it unseen.
When seen, it was found te yield no work
able ere, and only a small tract of farm
land, with a few common farm buildings.
The question new was : " What shall I
de with it ?" That question has been an
swered. Mr. Bradford must take rank as
a public benefactor.
