MexTfizuiu, Colerado,
July 13, 1880,
Six months age the gentle zephyrs of
Lancaster played through our curling
locks and ever the Etruscan finish of our
smiling frontispiece as we steed hat doffed
in adieu te boyhood friends and Westward
bound. In what direction the cunning
hand of chance might box the dial of the
compass was matter of but little moment ;
for strong was the yeufliful faith born of
Munro's biblical essays, and wild the
longing te fraternize or break crust with
the untamed savage, noblest chum of garret
dreams and fancies. Sad te relate, all prof
fered advances in this direction have been
received with a chilling indifferentism
that speaks volumes for the domestic ukase
woven by Carl Schurz ct al. ever these
seasoned off-sheets of hill and dale. We
have learned te bid fancy back te its home
in the realm of thought, for the whiz of
the tomahawk and war-whoop are heard
no mere ; but often may be seen through
the charming twilight the kid-gloved 0u-
ray, clad in 'Mean and slippered pantaloon,"
chanting the sweet refrain " Baby Mine,"
te the awakening accompaniment of en
thusiastic papoeso. " Ilacc elim memin memin
isse juvabit."
Montezuma by some vulgarly styled
civilization's annex is a mining camp
of growing prominence, situated 10,
500 feet above the level of the sea, in
the very heart of the Recky mountains.
Flanked en every aide by mountains rising
thousands of feet higher, whose sides te
the very topmost crag are ribbed with sil
ver in enormous quantities, watered by
one little stream coursing silently along, it
presents a picture of rugged grandeur.
Bustling, wide-awake Denver is eighty
miles distant and the click ef the
telegraphic battery and the puffing
of the steam engine close, with
Georgetown nestling snugly at the
feet of the range. This place, remarkable
as the nucleus of true flssure silver
bearing veins, ewes its social status te the
exotics transplanted from our own com
monwealth. Twe of Lancaster's fairest
and brightest daughters have reigned
here with despotic sway, While Pittsburgh
has furnished it with the nester of the
Colerado bar, and ene of nature's noble
men. There arc many objects of interest lying
en route between Denver and our camp,
which owing chiefly te the wild but
picturesque scenery encircling them, must
awaken feelings of awe even in the blase
traveler. Space forbids mere than the
mention of the most prominent, argentine
pass, 13,100 feet above Bca level, from which
the rising smoke of every camp within
a radius of 100 miles can be traced. Stand
ing here upon a clear day can be seen the
Kansas plains stretching far te the eant
while te the westward rise the snowy
peaks Pike and Gray, covered with black
and rugged rocks flecked with patches of
snow and tufted here and there with -a
few scattering and stunted pines. Hew
sublime the feelings awakened in the
poetic soul while contemplating at times
the rain drop as it falls from the heavens
above, divides and slowly trickles away te
the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. By an
almost perpendicular descent of 2,500 feet
from this summit the feet of the gulch is
reached, inhaling and exhaling made bare
possibilities, and the hepe of reaching our
camp, six miles distant, a consummation
devoutly te be wished. Would that your
quill-driving correspondent wero gifted
with a Ruskin's pen te paint in glowing
colors the facades and turreted cabins,
CxlO and a dozen told, of Montezuma, as
they rise gnome-like through the evening
gleaming, or trace the serpentine grace of
its ene winding avenue strentr in the loca
tion certificates of its uprising stumps.
But the fear of striking a bonanza has
huuglike the sword of Damocles ever our
palsied dreams for the past few weeks, and
sand carbonates have been running in
quantities of 10 te 12 quarts (?) through
our quiet throbbing veins. Thus literary
work has been discounted, but through
the cress cuts, adits and winzes of these
mental aberrations, there has always been
clearly distinct the features of the two
prominent institutions gracing the pages
of this camp's history. One is an oleo
margarine shop, wherein are dispensed all
the necessaries, and ergo luxuries, of life
that go te taper off the rotundity of our
rollicking Falstafls who often perforce
"cat the air premise crammed." An en
terprising lord and master chuckles grimly
ever the spruce shelves that display the
vegetable plucked lrem mother earth and
canned barely within the statutory limita
tion, the lactic fluid condensed and patent
ed, in fine an indiscriminate collection of
trip-hammers, molasses kegs nnd ante ante
deminal sweetmeats; all labeled tag,
rag and bob-tail ; and ever all there swings
with pendulum-like regularity the sugges
tive sign :
"In Ged wc trust, all ethers cash."
The ether institution is a dispensary of
lightning, "Taranteler," and home of
green cloth experts. Here the varying
finances of the nation, in the shape of high
and low ball polka and keno, are discussed
with occasional entrees of shot-gun science
and quick exchange of mining compli
ments. When evening grows apace the
rugged prospector slouches in from the
hills, carefully nursing all his stock-in-hand
pick and shovel and anxious te
lave his wearied brew in Bacchanalian
orgies. He is the typical character with
heart of geld under a rough uncouth ex
terior with that pardonable amount of
braggadecia which is the earmark of his
class. Since the days of "49" he has
been wandering ever every feet of min
eral soil en the Western continent,
working with strong arm and brave heart
under the sweltering sun and
through almost impassable barriers
of ice and snow, with hardly
ever a red in sight. " Compared with his,
the task of cleaning the Augean stables was
but the ante-breakfast chore," and yet
squatting comfortably down, he will pic
ture, with the rough eloquence born of
his noble simplicity the little home and
smiling sweetheart waiting for him" in the
far East. Of course the bully and brag
gart strolls along occasionally armed cap-a-pie
and ready te annihilate any tender-feet
blossom that dare sprout 'neath his blast
ing glance. As illustrative, however, of his
staying powers the following actual oc ec
curence may be mentioned : An itinerant
photographer believing that his fame
would be perpetuated in the reproduction
Of Montezuma upon his camera, unfolded
and proceeded te work. A strapping
six footer with proper accoutrements and
quantum of benzine en beard, ensconced
himself upon the most preminent object
within reach, a bcer barrel, and yelled
"fire away." A wag, suiting the action
te the word, let go a twin barrel, and the
earth rese with sudden ferce te meet our
here. Jumping te his feet like an untamed
Piute he reared, "I'm the war horse of
these hills, the click of a six-shooter is
music te my ear, a bewic knife is my leek
ing-glass, " seeing something glisten
ing in the sun " but a shotgun lets me
out. Fact this, of as stern and stiff a
mould as ever fell from the lips of Themas
Gradgrind.
Much skepticism has been here
tofore expressed as te the quantity
andvalue of the mineral ribbing our hills,
but lately an Obcren has touched their
blear eyes with the magic flower, and the
mountains resound with the sturdy strokes
of grub-staked pioneers. Many rich strikes
are reported, sales negotiated, and alto
gether such a air of activity prevails as
nourishes the hope that a client will yet
darken the threshold of our deer. But
a fuller explanation will be forthcoming
in our next letter, if the circulation of the
INTELLIGENCE! should survive this.
An incxhaustlble font of consolation
is left the inhabitants (some 200) constant
ly bubbling ever, refreshing the weary and
making the faint heart strong. Net one of
the gender known as Frailty graces our
camp, net nc lene, lern female net one
item of gossip. Who can deny that the
very Utopia of El Dorados has been
reached. Therefore no goddess of "Ceres"
floats through the culinary department,
and each maa's tenure of the morrow's
baeen is obtained by donning the apron
and pitching in. Reader, have you ever
steed ever the wash-beard watching the
little spceks disappear one by ene by ferce
of attrition while the glimmer from the
'moonlight sleeping en yonder bank"
wrapped you in a glorious hale and the
notes of the dulcet-toned Jack rese with
plaintive swectuess and floated away upon
the azure air? " If music be the feed of
love," bray en,swcet Jack, bray en. I don't
knew that this can be found in Ilorace
Grcely's category of reasons for West
ern migration, but it should be for it is
" facile princcps." At least such has been
our experience eliminated from six months'
"batching ;" six months that seem te
have resolved themselves in a eycle during
which net even for the moment has our
mental lance forsworn allegiance te the
memory of ye olden days. Through the
curling smoke of the camp fires without,
through towering mountains and passes,
through the dry nnd arid plains, through
every step of the 3,000 miles separating us
from home, imagination leads a maddening
pace until it settles us, snug and comfort
able, by the cheerful hcarth-side in the sun
shine of loving friends, who " let fall the
curtains, wheel the sofa round and welcome
peaceful evening in." Hew pleasant thus
te wear the golden threads of fancy, te
lift the curtain veiling behind it the " ten
der grace of a day that H dead," te touch
the chord awakening memories which
alene with dim declining years ask no re
turn for passion's wayward birth. Te
but as I live, pard(a Western patronymic)
wipes away the chloride of sodium fast
lodging in the furrows of a certain bronzed
phiz, and bids me wind up with a heart
felt " geed night." M. Betre.

Dr. W.T. Mtrachan en the Blch Mining
Prospects.
Albuquerque, N. M., July 12, 1880.
Dit. S. S. Rathven, Lancaster, Pa.
My Dear Sir : I have received your es.
teemed favor of the 2d instant, and infer
from its contents you desire reliable infor
mation concerning our mining prospects
vicinity, etc., etc. In reply I beg leave te
say that nn extended personal acquaint
ance with the mining regions of the terri
tory and a knowledge of similar districts
in ether localities outside of New Mexico
gained from reports of persons new here
who have worked in the mines elsewhere
induces the belief that this district, the
Sandia and Manzano, far surpasses them
all in mineral richness. The extent of
this mineral-bearing district is about fif
teen miles square, and while it has net been
by any means prospected as it should have
been, shows within its limits mines tha
run high in precious metal. The Star
mine, for instance, which has been ejpened
te a depth of but thirty feet, shows by
assay 128 te $161 in geld. The assay of
128 was made from ere taken from six dif
ferent places in the shaft and is consid
ered by ail who knew the mine a
true average teat of its real Value par ten.
On this same vein are two ether shafts
which show in pyrites of copper an aver
age of thirteen per centum of copper and
eight ounces of silver ere per ten. There
are six ether locations in the district in
which the Star mine is located which show
equally geed. Anether thing, the veins
are net mere streaks of pay ere, but their
width is almost marvelous, that of the
Star above referred te being fully thirty-
five feet wide between wall rocks. This
in itself makes the mines extraordinarily
valuable, for while in some sections the
pay streak of true vein is only a few inches
wide, here they run from thirty te forty
feet from side te side. North of the dis
trict above described ether mines have re
cently been discovered, which premiso te
be very valuable in silver. They are only
about four miles north, and like the Sandia
and Manzanas have in the immediate vL
einity an abundance of both timber and
pure soft water. In this special neighborhood
I knew of only seven locations having, as
yet, been made, as the parties who first
discovered it have been keeping it quiet
until they and their friends could have the
first cheice of locations. Frem what I
knew of the district and its formation I
am positive the best locations have been
overlooked, and if my interests in
ether localities did net occupy
all my time and attention, I would
seen acquire property there. As te our
climate, none can be hotter suited te min
ing operations than this ; for here we work
all the year round in both winter and
summer and find no inconvenience. As you
knew, I am far from being a robust man,
and yet during the whele of last winter, I
lest only two days from mining by reason
of inclement weather. We suffer neither
the extreme of heat nor cold, but enjoy an
agreeable temperature all the year round,
If your son should decide te ceme here, or
any of your friends visit Albuquerque, I
would take great pleasure in showing these
mines, and as they are located only some
fourteen te eighteen miles from this place,
the journey, lying through a very pictures
que country, would be mere like a holiday
jaunt than a visit te a mining camp. In
looking ever what I have written concern
ing the newly discovered silver district, I
find I emitted te state that the average
taken from top rock, or the exposed parts
of the vein, shows a value of from four te
one hundred nnd seventy ounces in silver.
If you desire te use this letter for publi
cation, you are at liberty te use my name
as authority for the several statements
made.
Very rcspcetfully,
W. T. Straciias.
