The Destruction eftiftwe Ei.
Se long as America ceutinued in the oc
cupation of the aborigines, the order of
nature was apparently but little disturbed.
The buffalo and deer, the wild fowl and
turkeys, furnished abundant feed te the
savages without serious encroachment
upon the fertility of nature. Iu savage
life Uiere appears te be no wanton or un
necessary destruction of the natural
means of support. It was reserved for the
civilized white man te carry en a wanton
war against the bounty of nature, and te
kill and destroy, without thought or
study of these imperative laws under which
nature holds in trust the feed supply
of man. Frem the first settlement of the
country, the process of eradicating and an
nihilating the useful animals, birds and
iislicn natural te the country has been car
ried en with an energy and success but tee
characteristic of the Saxen race. Large
tracts of land have been entirely depopu
lated of their animals and useful birds.
The buffalo en his native plains has be
come an object of rare curiosity. Deer
are limited te the remoter mountain ranges
or extensive tracts of barren weeds. The
wild fowl, which swarmed in New Eng
land during the first settlement of the
country, and for a long time afterwards,
have almost disappeared. The last wild
turkey was killed iu Massachusetts nearly
half a ceutury age. There is probably no
sportsman living who has killed a grouse
en Martha's Vineyard, the last refuge in
the nertliea.it of that most valuable bird.
Plover still migrate, though in diminished
numbers, from their breeding places in the
far North te their winter home in the
Seuth, but they carefully avoid the uo;th ue;th
castern coasts. Ne one in this generation
has seen a wild swan alighting en the
waters of Massachusetts. They once
abounded there. Even the wild geese find
no resting place here, but are expelled ub
if they were tramps and vagabonds.

Mr. Marsh, in his most interesting and
instructive book, " Man and Nature."
shows hew spendthrift man has. by his
ignorance and neglect of the laws of
nature, ruined for the purposes of habita
tion large portions of his fair inheritance
en the surface of the eatth. The shores
of the Mediterranean exhibit te-day, in
many places, desolation net due te politi
cal or national decay, but te man's reck
less abuse ami wanton abstractiveness.
Although this may be excused te some ex-
tent by the ignorance of former days for
study of the relations of nature te man is
of very recent date there can be no ex
cuse, in our mere enlightened time, when
knowledge of all kinds is se accessible,
for net only abusing inanimate nature, but
for expelling from the earth se many of
our living leilew inhabitants, we are net
only forewarned by our present knowledge
but we have icaseii te believe that earnest
.study would in a few years reveal te ub
many of the new secret and hidden opera
tions of nature. We knew, for example,
little of the mysterious arrangements by
which nature disposes, after their
brief life, of the countless birds
and animals born into the world. Mary
millions are born annually ; as mauy mil
lions must annually die. We see the
smaller birds occasionally seized and de
veured by the birds of prey ; we knew that
the fox, the weasel, the wildcat, and the
mink live largely en birds ; but this does
int account for their mortality. Hew rare
ly we come across dead birds or animals
in our walks through the weeds and lields !
Nature is the most decorous of sextons.
She lays her countless dead te rest in the
besom of the earth noiselessly, and with no
trace te offend our senses or our feel
ings. Perpetual birth, youth and reno
vation are her monuments in her everlast
ing cemetery. Man lives surrounded by
her living forms : slie gives him little or
no hint of the mortality of her children. It
is from his own let and his imperfect deal
ings with his own decay that mau derives
his sad lessens and painful associations
with mortality.
As wc rarely knew individuals in animal
or bird life, these races seem in nature's
arrangement immortal. The spring brings
them te us with the ceitaiuty and fresh
ness of new leaves and flowers. Wc see
the leaves and flowers decay ; but, as a
general rule, wc have little eoncieusness
and scarcely any knowledge of the death
and decay of animated nature. Could we
knew this, we could greatly enlarge our
power of dealing with an animal race, with
every probability of increasing their num
bers and the average duration of their
