Is ClTllizatiea Played Oat! On Sunday in Leadville nearly every store is open. It is the chief day with the places of amusement ; the smoke of the smelters perfumes the ambient, air a little mere villainous than usual, if possible, and the streets are crowded. The church bells gather many worshipers, but they arc net missed from the thronged streets. The miners come in from all directions, from shafts and tunnels and prospect holes, swarming in the strcct, crewding the corners, filling the bars of the numerous saloons with a coming tide of humanity. Many come te buy their weekly supplies at the stores whose clerks knew no holy Sabbath rest ; ethers ceme te talk ever their strikes and finds, or te bring in their samples for testing. Crowds throng the mere than a hundred gambling dens, from whose wide-open doers the sound of piano, violin and flute mingle with the shrill voice of the dealer at the fare . table, calling, "Make veur bets, gentlemen," and the curses and vulgarity of the players taint the sacred Sabbath air. lhc gambling house knows no Sunday, and though the law of Colerado expressly prohibits the encninir of drinking or eamblin" houses en the Sabbath day, it is as dead as though it had never cumbered the leaves et tne statute books, and the police stand idly by watching its violation. Blear-eyed and bleated debauchees, hi whose besotted lives honor, decency and manhood have long since died, bandy ribald jests with the lest characters who carry the liquor te the tables. Thieves and pickpockets watch ing with keen eyes for the victim and op portunity mingle wiih bustling crowds and jostle you as you pass. Texas People and Currle's Acquittal. Cel. W. Y. Leader, editor of the Di$ patelt and Sunday Leader, Austin, Texas, who is a native of Pennsylvania, while conversing about the killing of Mr. Perter, the actor, by Curric, said : "I knew Cur Cur rie well. I have known him ever since he has been in Texas. I don't bcliove there's a man in Texas who thinks that Currie ought te have been acquitted of that mur der. On the contrary, nearly every man you sec bcl icves he ought te have been hung and is mad because he wasn't. The idea that he was insane is a thing tee ridiculous te be thought of and no one would have theugl I of it but that jury. If Curric had the inaiua-a-petu that night he had tne same thing almost every night in the week. Yeu lceplc up here needn't think jve are se bad because we didn't hang him. It was sim ply one of these slips that occur sometimes that saved his neck." A Foel Once Mere.
