OBITUARY.
Deatn of Christian Melllnger, Aaed 92.
Christian Mellingcr, a venerable patri
arch of Mountville, West Ilenipfield town
ship, died last evening between 10 and 11
o'clock, in the 92d year of his age, of
dropsy, with which he had been but a
fchert time affected. Mr. Mellingcr was a
native of this county, a farmer by profes
sion, and led a quiet and homely life ; and
yet by his frugality, industry and skill in
farming acquired a very considerable for
tune, estimated at from $80,000 te 100,
000. He was au upright, honorable man,
highly esteemed by all who knew him. He
was a widower, and for some years past
has lived with one of his sons. He was a
member, we believe, of the Old Mennonite
church. His surviving family consists of
four sous and six daughters, all of whom
are married. His funeral will take place
en Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock.
Caught iu the Act.
On Saturday evening a woman attempted
te steal a pair of shoes from the stoic of
Shaub & Bre., en East King btreet. Soen
after entering the store she picked up a
pair of gaiters which she placed under her
arm and attempted te conceal. Mrs.
Shaub, wife of one of the piopiicteis of
the store, was in at the time and she saw
the woman take the shoes. After pre
tending te make some purchases the
woman started te leave the store. The
cleik, who had been informed of the
larceny by Mrs. Shaub, stepped her as she
was going out, and, catching held of the
shoes, pulled them out from under her
arm. The woman said she had bought
them up town, but as they had the marks
of the linn upon them she was compelled
te admit the theft. The clerk gave her
into the custody of a policeman, but Mr.
Shaub refused te prosecute and she was
allowed te go free. She said her name
was Miller.

and a quantity of milk were stolen.

made te open the store of Kauffman &
Livingston, but was unsuccessful.

him a safe trip.

Keller, (who is studying dentistry with
Dr. Webb), of this city, Dr. J. L. Baker,
of Coatesville, Dr. Underwood, of West
Chester and Dr. J. L. Nislcy, of Middle Middle
tewn: also. Mr. Juan Falero, of Mexico,
(a student of the dental department of the
L'nivei-sity of Pennsylvania, new spending
sometime in this city witnessing operations
by Dis. Webb and Kutz), left Lancaster
en the fast line at 2:10 this afternoon for
Bellefentc, te attend the three days ses
sion of Pennsylvania state dental society.
Dis. Webb, Kutz, Baker, Underwood and
Xisley are te clinic before the society with
the clectie-maguetie mallet, and a new
electric engine.

The Landisville campmecting will be
opened formally to-nmnew afternoon. Al
ready there are en the grounds semethiity
ei- forty families. Seme or the cottages :ue
already occupied and all of them have
b2en refitted and put in elder for house
keeping. Yesterday tlrsre was picachi'ig morning
and evening by Rev. Jereme Lindemuth,
of St. Paul's church, this city. The pros
pect is that the camp will be one of tl.e
largest ever held en the grounds.
Washington Borough Items.
The borough is again quiet, the excite
ment caused by the removal of the fences
having subsided.
The river is falling and there arc plenty
of fishermen upon it.
The Sabbath school of the Church of
Gi.d holds its annual picnic in the grove
of Bemhurd Mann, deceased, en Wednes
day. A brass band will enliven the occa
sion. The tobacco is looking well and some of
it is being topped.
Clir-d With Stealing Lumber.
Jehn Schects and Geerge Evans, of Co
lumbia, were arrested for stealing lumber
from the yard of Edward Smith, in that
place. It appears that thse men were in
the habit of taking lumber from Mr.
Smith's yard, and after leading it in beats
they would take it te Washington borough
where they would dispose of it. Iu de
fault of bail thft men were committed te
jail by Squire Evans, te answer the charge
at court.
Hard te Find.
The late president of the late beard of Re
publican return judges, Jehn II. Fry, esq.,
has been busy all day hunting speakers for
the Republican meeting at Ephrata. Owing
toarepeitthat Fry would preside ou the
occasion he had great difficulty in finding
anybody who would go. He has fallen
back en his friend Tem Davis as a last
resort.
A Sunday Scheel Worker.
The leca' committee en state Sunday
school convention have been notified that
Kev. 1$. F. Vincent will attend the conven
tion. Mr. Vincent is one of the most en
thusiastic Sunday school workers in the
United States. He is the author of a num
ber of the Chatauqua text book, was
leader of the Chester Heights assembly,
and will lead the assemblies at Lakeside,
Ohie and Chatauqua, X. Y.
Mad Dogs.
Yesterday there was considerable excite
ment in Rohrerstown. It was caused by
a deg belonging te Isaac Miller which was
believed te be mad. The animal was
shot after he had bitten several ethers.
A deg was shot at Walnut and Queen
streets te-day by a boy. The animal was
said te have had the hydrophobia.
A deg which had the fits or hydrophobia
made his appearance en Seuth Queen
street last night. He bit a little girl aud
s cvcral dogs and was finally killed.

Charles Coulman of this city, put up a
large paper balloon in Manhcim en Satur
day night. After it had ascended several
hundred feet it burst.

The Sun Equipment association is hold
ing a picnic at Tell's Hain te-day and the
attendance is large.
Goods Ideattfled.
The can of lard found in the possession
of James Murvine en Saturday morning
was identified te-day by a man who re
sides en the Herse Shee pike near Mechan
icsburg. He says it was stolen from his
premises en Saturday morning between 2
and 3 o'clock. There were two handker
chiefs of the same material banging en
the fence iu the yard at the same time.
One of these was stolen and it was found
in Murvine's house this morning by Con
stable Lentz.
Bitten by a Deg.
Yesterday afternoon Geerge Maxwell,
aged about 20 years, and bearding with
his mother Mrs. Jesephine Maxwell, Ne.
4i:i Church street, was attacked by a
strange deg and bitten in the leg near the
knee. The deg behaved se strangely that
feais were entertained that he may have
been mad. As a precautionary measure
Mr. Maxwell called upon a surgeon and
had the wound cauterized. The deg is
said te belong te a family. living in the
neighborhood.

The horse and buggy stolen en Friday
night from Mr. Binklcy, of Lititz, the par

seen loitering in the vicinity are supposed
te be the thieves.

Evangelical association, in charge of Rev.

A Itey Drowned.
On Friday afternoon, a two-year-old son
of Mr. Henry Darene, residing in Hellam
township, Yerk county, fell into a water
trough at the spring-house and was
drowned. He is said te have been a very
bright and interesting child.

Squire Frank, of Columbia, has returned
te court fourteen cases of riot against per
sons who were engaged in the recent
trouble in Washington borough, caused by
the attempt of the authorities te set back
the fences.
Small Wreck.
Near the tunnel, above Columbia, a
small freight wreck occurred yesterday af
ternoon. Several box cars leaded with
freight and the caboose were thrown from
the traek and broken.

a collision in the British channel. Five of

men were much cheered en Saturday upon
going np te receive their prizes at the
hands of the Princess of Wales. All the
papers mention the dispute between Far Far
eow and Hyde. The marker who took
the bribe in the Olympic competition is
under arrest. The court of inquiry has
net yet given its decision in the matter.
The British team suggested that two stran
gers should be placed in the butts te watch
the target of the Americans during the
match in order te see fair play, but Hyde
declared it unnecessary.

dispatch te the Daily Nevn says the
Perte in its reply te the collective note of
the powers, points out that article 24tli of
the treaty of Berlin merely expressed a
wish for and authorized the powers te
offer mediation "net arbitration." It
declared that the decision of the recent
conference gives Greece mere territory
than did proctecol 13 of the Berlin treaty,
and indicates that the proposed cession in
cludes positions which it is impossible for
Turkey te surrender.

The first account of Henry M. Phillips
and Win. M. Singerly, executers of the es
tate of Jeseph Singerly, the deceased mil
lionaire builder and Philadelphia city mag
nate, has been adjudicated and confirmed
absolutely by the judges of the or
phans' court. Under the will of the
decedent his widow is te have for
life his late commodious city residence at
Bread and Jeffersen streets, together with
the furniture, carriages, horses, statuary,
&c. Te his daughters, Elizabeth Painter
and Careline Fleming, and his son, Geerge
A. Singerly, annuities of 90,000 each a
year are left te be paid until such time as
when the residuary estate shall reach the
principal sum of six hundred thousand
dollars, when they are te share equally the
income arising. Each grandchild is left
$5,000, te be paid upon coming te age.
Henry M. Phillips receives (10,000.
Te William Singerly publisher of the
Recerd, is bequeathed the whole of his
father's stock in the Germantown passen
ger railway company, 14,113 shares, ap
praised at $705,650. William's legacy,
however, is charged with annuity of $12,
000, te be paid te the decedent's widow in
the monthly sum of $1,000, and with such
portions of ether annuities if the income
of the estate should prove deficient te
provide for them. By his will Mr. Singer
ly made a number of ether small legacies
and bequests. The account shows the
estate te aggregate in value ever million
and quarter of money.

friends of ezMayer W.O.Rem and Hea.
Ames Townsend, the present congressman,
the Republican of the Twentieth Ohie dis;
trict held a convention which was marked
by great bitterness. The friends of Mr.
Rese, a large minority in the body, belted
and held a seperate meeting and appoint
ed a central committee te call a people's
convention ; also, a committee td issne a
manifesto te the voters of the district set
ting forth their grievances. After repeated
futile efforts te bring the belters into the
regular convention Mr. Townsend was re re
eominated for Congress. There is deep
feeling en both sides.
