"Let Us Hive Peace."
Timely Extracts from m Recent Address.
Twelve years age the same great ccn
querer Grant wben called by bis admir
ing fellow citizens te the highest office in
their power te bestow further showed the
greatuess of his nature by the laconic utter
ance, "Let us have peace !" It was this
word that electrified the nation, and rallied
it te his support Hew has that aspiiatien
been fulfilled ? Have we had peace for the
last fifteen years? Ne; we have had but
its hollow semblance ; we have had the
farm of nr-am with the passions of war.
At every election the war has been fought
ever again, ine Deumeru peepic u
raitted honorably te the terms imposed;
the Southern states amended their consti
tutions se as te prohibit slavery and the
payment of the rebel debt ; they did every
thing that generous men could ask or
honorable men grant everything except
te change their natures and denounce
"the lest cause " for which their brothers,
fathers, sons, or husbands fell. The rebel
lion ceased, and there was no longer a
rebel in the land ; no longer a man who
did net acknowledge the supremacy of the
national government and the national flag.
OnthcFouthef July, 1876, military com
panies from all the original thirteen
states met in Philadelphia as if no war
had ever divided them ; and the whole
body, commanded by General Heth, a gal
lant Confederate officer, paraded the
streets, marching under the stars and
stripes te the music of the Union. Surely
this did net leek like a state of war.
These gentlemen from Seuth Carolina who
fraternally clasped hands with these from
Massachusetts were net enemies seeking
our destruction, but friends seeking te re
unite the bends of fraternal feeling, te re
build their desolate homes, te re-establish
the prosperity of our common country.
Why net give them our conlideuce and
friendship ? Why insult them by hurling
at them the epithets of rebel and traitor ;
by continually reminding them of their de
feat ; by representing the whole Southern
people as bloodthirsty and cruel ? There
may have been " Ku-Klux outrages ;"
doubtless negrees have sometimes been
prevented from exercising their newly ac
quired political rights; but something
may be pardoned te the desperation born
of despair. Could a high-spirited people
be expected te bear with patience the over
turning ol'theirlecal governments by force,
the installing in their highest offices of
greedy adventurers caring only for their
own aggrandizement, the pollution of their
legislative halls by a horde of semi-savages,
uiul the heaping up upon them of
mountains of debt which they never could
pay? What would wchave done under
similar circumstances? And have there
been no outrages elsewhere ? Ne election
frauds elsewhere? Nene in New Yerk?
Nene in Pennsylvania? Nene, if you
please in Lancaster? . "Let him who is
without sin cast the first stone." "Let
us have peace !" Let the bloody hatchet
be buried forever. Let ue exercise some
cliaritv tewaid our "erriujr brothers."
Confidence begets confidence ; and confi
dence is necessary te the building up of a
true and permanent Union.
A Solid Seuth."
There has been much talk of "a solid
Seuth ;" but why is a solid Seuth any
mere dangerous than a solid Nertli, a solid
East, or a solid West? Each section has
its own local interests ; but all sections are
equally interested in the prosperity of the
republic. What measures de the Seuth
desire, what measures can they desire,
that arc dangerous te the perpetuity of the
Union ? They de net desire the rc-cstab-lishinent
of slavery ; it is centray net only
te the spirit of the century, but te their own
interests. They de net desire te reopen
the war of disunion ; they have had
enough of war ; what they most desire is
peace. They de net desire the payment
of their war debt ; net only is it prohibited
by the national constitution, but it would
impoverish both themselves and us. There
is no national bar te a true national Union
a Union net of the states only, but of
hearts and hands. Take the war issue out
politics, cease te taunt our Southern breth
ren as "bloodthirsty traitors," and the
"solid Seuth" would fall asunder of its
own accord,
" Like U:ik that's sundered nt the touch et
lire,"
and new combinations would be formed
en ether issues.
lllttcrnes of Political Contests.
Oue of the greatest dangerous te the
permanence of our government is the grow
ing bitterness of political contests. As
our country grows, offices are mere and
mere eagerly sought for and by mere and
mere violent means. Our elections are
often decided, net by the vote of a free
people, but by a crowd of roughs hired for
the purpose. And the worst feature of it
is, that the people seem willing te be thus
cheated, and allow the same thing te
be done again aud again. And this
is true, net of one party only, but equally
of both. Politics have become disreputa
ble and elections a game a game abound
ing iu tricks, and in which power and
plunder are the stakes. Let the purest
man be nominated for office, and he be
comes at once the butt of ridicule and the
victim of slander. Such was the fate of
the lamented Greeley; a man who did
mere for the education and advancement
of his countrymen than any ether man of
h:s time. But as seen as he was nomi
nated for the presidency all his geed words
aud deeds were forgotten, and his mis
takes held up te ridicule with almost
fiendish delight. Such
has been the fate of ether and mere recent
candidates of both parties. Po
litical au'tnesities are even allowed te sever
the ties of friendship, te interfere with
business relations, te disorder social life,
te have weight in the selection of teachers,
and in a hundred ether ways te d'sturb
the peace and harmony of society.
The Presidential Campaign.
The subject has new become one of im
mediate and pressing importance. We are
just entering upon one of the most impor
tant Dresidenlial elections in the history
of our country ; one that will determine
the political complexion of our govern
ment for many years te come ; one that
will be closely and hotly contested ; and
one in which every feet of debatable
creund will be conquered or yielded inch
bvinch. Hew shall it be fought? Shall
it be fought en the high plane of political
principles, with weapons of fact and
reason : or. shall it be fought en the low
nlane of partisan malice, with weapons of
calumny and abuse? Shall it be fought
according te the methods of high-minded
men and patriotic citizens, or according
te the methods of political roughs and
"reunders?" This is the question for
American citizens te answer, and the ques
tion for us te consider te-day.
Klnqaent Tribute te Hancock.
On the 24th or June, in the city of Cin
cinnati, the ether great party of our coun
try, through its representatives, chose as
its standard bearer a distinguished son of
Pennsylvania; a soldier "without fear
and without reproach;" a man who en a
hundred battlefields at Williamsburg, at
Antietam,at Spettsylvania,and above all at
Gettysburg, proved his heroic valor and his
devotion te the grand old flag for which
his grandsire fought in the Revolution ;
a man who under the most trying circum
stances has proved himself cool and saga
cious ; a man who, under the strongest
temptation te exercise arbitrary power, de
liberately put it aside, and maintained the
supremacy of law and justice ; a man who
in his semi-civil experience has shown
such breadth of comprehension and such a-l
grasp of statesmanship, as have excited
the admiration of the ablest lawyers and
jnriste ; and, beve all, a man who in bis
private life, in every relation of huf
band, father, friend and citizen, has
maintained a reputation as spotless
as his sword. What can be aaid of such a
man? What ingenuity of party malice
can glut the greed for scandal in such a
career? And yet. in a few weeks since
his nomtnatien, the N. Y. Ernes has dis
covered that he is but " a pretentious no
body ! " and a Philadelphia newspaper has
found that he is unworthy te be called a
Pennsylvanian, and is in fact but
little better than a traitor! Is
this kind of detraction te be tolerated by
respectable men and women? Is the
fair fame of a great soldier te be the cast
aside like a worthless thing, because a
meat nartv chose honor him as they her-
ered Jeffersen ? Are his scars te count for
neught? Is the bleed be shed at Gettys
burg te save our state and nation te be thus
scoffed at and despised. Net the Black
Prince at Crccv. net Bruce at Bannck-
burn, net Murat at Marengo, net Sheridan
at Winchester, and Five Ferks, displayed
mere splendid valor than did Hancock at
Gettysburg. And yet he is te be called
"a pretentious nobody"! Oh, shame upon
American manhood, shame upon Pennsyl
vania, if such partisan raeaness is allowed
te go unpunished !
