Eancastet Intelligencer.
FRIDAY MVKNTKQ. JULY 23, I860.
Smccm With Bull Fretts."
Burlington Hawkeye.
" I just rolled out here from the grocery
store," Mid the little green apple as it
passed en the sidewalk for a moment's
ehat with the banana peel ; "I am waiting
here for a boy. Net a small, weak, deli
cate boy," added the little green apple,
proudly, "but a great big boy, a great
bulky, strong, leather-langed, noisy fifteen
year elder, and little as I am you will see
me double up that boy te-night and make
m, wsi stui hnwi and veil. Ob. I'm
small, but I'm geed for a ten-acre field of
boys and don't you lergec . ah iub wy
in Burlington," the little green apple went
en with just a shade of pitying contempt
ia its voice, "couldn't feel around me as
any one of them feels around a banana."
44 Beys seem te be your game," drawled
the banana peel, lazily ; "well, I supppsc
they are just about strong enough te afford
you a little amusement. Fer my own
part, 1 de like te take someeoay ei my
size. New here comes the kind of a man
I usually de business with. lie is large
and strong, it is true, but "
And just then a Seuth Hill merchant,
who weighs about 231 pounds when he
feels right geed, came along, and the ba
nana peel just caught him by the feet,
lilting him as high as the awninc pest,
turned him ever, banged him down en a
potato basket, flattening it out until it
looked like a splint doormat, and the shock
jarred everything loose in the show-window.
And then while the fallen merchant
from various quarters of the glebe, fished
his silk hat from the gutter, his spectacles
from the cellar, his handkerchief from the
tree-box, his cane from the show-window
and one of his shoes from the eaves-trough,
and a little boy ran for the doctor, the lit
tle green apple blushed red and shrank a
little back out of sight covered with awe
n1 nnrf.ifl2it.inn.
"Ah," it thought, "I wonder if lean
ever de that ? Alas, hew vain I was, and
yet hew peer and weak and useless I am in
rhis world."
But the banana peel comforted it and
bade it leek up and teke heart, and de well
what it hail te de, and labor for the geed
of the cause in its own useful sphere.
'True," said the banana peel, "you can
not lift up a 200 pound man and break a
cellar deer with him, bat you can give
him the cholera merbus, and if you de
your part the world will feel your power,
and the medical colleges will call you
blessed."
And then the little green apple smiled
and looked up with grateful blushes en its
face, and thanked the banana peel for its
encouraging counsel. And that very night,
an old father, who writes thirteen hours a
day, and a patient mother who was almost
ready te sink from weariness, and a nurse
and a doctor sat up until nearly morning
with a thirteen-year-old boy, who was all
twisted up into the shape of a figure 3,
while all the neighbors en that block sat
up and listened and pounded their pillows
and tried te sleep and wished that boy
would either die or get well.
And the little green apple was pleased,
and its last words were, "At least I have
been of some little use in this great, wide
world."
m
Fresh Cew Manare for Cera.
E. W. S. In Country Gentleman.
There has been a geed deal of discus
sion as te the proper way of applying
stable manure; and it has often been
stated that fresh manure is net valuable
te apply te land at the time of putting in
a crop that it required fermentation be
fore it can furnish feed for plants. There
is no doubt that well-retted manure has a
mere rapid effect upon a crop than when
applied fresh; but there are many con
siderations te be taken into account in
determining the proper time of the appli
cation. The less of fertilizing matter
while the manure is retting is se consider
able as te raise the question whether the
less does net overbalance the gain. If the
liquid manure is saved as well as the solid,
this liquid will be mostly soluble, and as
similable by plants at once.
Since placing my cows tfpen a self
cleaning platform the receptacle below
which being water-tight the liquid is all
saved and applied with the solid manure,
fresh from the stable, every three or four
weeks. It is hauled directly te the field,
and applied te the soil at the time of put
ting in a crop, or te a winter grain crop, as
atop dressing. I have also applied it for
several years- te the corn during the
early period of its cultivation. The wagon
containing the liquid and solid manure
fresh from the reservoir under the plat
form is driven te the corn field, and strid
ing a row, the manure is spread between
the rows. It is immediately cultivated
by an ordinary cultivator, or, if mixed
with some horse manure, which has
some litter in it, a large disc cultivator
is used, as it will mere effectually bury
the litter. The disc cultivator is mere ef
fectual en a heavy soil, as it works it into
very fine condition. 11ns works the lresh
manure into the surface soil, and prevents
any less of its fertilizing constituents. I
find that the liquid manure produces an
immediate effect upon the corn crop whieh
come the following season, such as winter
wheat, or a spring crop of wheat, or barley
or eats, is much better titan it the manure
applied te the corn crop had been well ret
ted. A small amount of manure of this
class seems te have a remarkable effect, aud
te last much longer than when applied in
a fermented condition. Since keeping my
cows (20) upon this platform, with the
water tight receptacle below, they fertilize
twice the number of acres, and te better ef
fect than when the manure was fermented.
The liquid and solid being carried directly
te the field, the soil (a clay loam) absorbs
and heldsjthe whole of it without less. If
a farmer will once carefully try tne ettect
of saving all the liquid of his cattle stable,
he will never return te the old wasteful
practice of allowing the urine te soak into
the nearest stream, and be virtually lest
te his fields. This is one of the first im
prevements the careful farmer should
make in husbanding his resources. He
should devise a sure means of saving his
liquid as well as solid manure, and allow
ae waste te occur before it is conveyed te
his fields. It may be hauled te any field
under fallow, and a slight harrowing will
sufficiently cover it te prevent less.

writing about Dr. Themas' Electric; OH, says :
