Londen Daily News. A tube twenty inches long by four inches diameter, of coiled Lowmeor iron, was bored se as te have an internal diameter of one-half an inch. Thus the cen tral bore was surrounded by walls r imn nni nr.d tlirce-nuartcrs inches thick, and, of court,e, capable or resist ing an enormous pressure. In the tube was placed a mixture of 90 per cent, of bone-oil and 10 per cent, of par-affinc-spirit, together with 4 grammes (about 02 grains) of the metal lithium. The open end of the tube was welded air tight ami the wneie was men uvuivu ." redness for fourteen hours and allowed te oel slowly. On opening it a great volume of gas rushed from thctube.and within was r.niufla hard, smooth mass adhering te the sides of the tube. " It was quite black and was removed with a chisel, and as it ap peared te be composed principally of iron and lithium it was laid aside for analysis. I was pulverizing it in a mortar, When I felt that some parts of the material were extremely hard net resisting a blew, but hard other wise. On looking closer I saw that these weie most traMiarent pieces imbedded in the hard matrix, and en triturating them I obtained some free from the black matter. They turned out te be crystalline carbon, exactly like diamond. " Such is Mr. Hannay's account of his discovery. Subsequent chemical and optical analysis has proved that these hard, shining crys tals are in every icspcct true diamonds. The cost is obviously great ; se, also, the danger 1e life and prepcity; and the great dilliculties te be overcome render dis appointments common. What we new want is te get vessels of a material suiii ciently stieng and non-porous te lesist the hiih pressures and temperatures upon which the success of the experiment depends. A I'oel Once Mere.
