The following changes In the southeastern
and southwestern sections of Lancaster city
are made, as diiected by court, and may be
seen in the eflice of the Clerk of Quarter Ses Ses
seons: 1. linger street, east of Queen street, moved
southward, its width increased te 00 feet, ex
tends eastward, cutting off a small corner of
Woodward Hill cemetery; thence bending
northward along fence ; thence te Seuth street.
2. Seymour street, east of Queen, Yerk street,
north of new line of Hager street and adjacent
alley, are eliminated.
3. Width of Seuth Christian street, from
Church street te Middle street, is changed te

His Nomination But the Humble Beginning
of a Triumphant End His Views ea
the Prohibitory Movement.
Portland. Mb., July 20. Gen. Neai
Dew has written a letter accepting the
nomination for the presidency by the na
tional Prohibition party. After comment
ing at some length en the cost of the liquor
traffic and the respectability of the Prohib
itory movement, he concludes as fellows :
"I consider the objects of the Prohibition
ists of this country te be of supreme im
portance te the interests of the nation and
the people. Aside from its bearing upon
the moral and religious welfare of the peo
ple, I consider the suppression of the liquor
traffic te be an object of far greater politi
cal importance than any ether new
claiming the attention of the coun
try. My life has been, largely
devoted te the accomplishment of that
purpose. Perhaps I may live te see
my dearest hopes-in relation te it realized,
at least in this my own state. But, hew'
ever that may be, in the future as in the
past I shall keep that object in view. "While
1 sincerely wish that the choice of a can
didate by the Cleveland convention had
fallen upon some ether than myself, I ac
cept the nomination willingly, being sure
that it will prove te be the humble begin
ning of a triumphant end."
JAIL DELIVERY.
Fourteen Prisoners Escape Frem the Hen Hen
Hendersen, (la.) Prison.
Chicago, 111., July 20. A dispatch from
Burlingteu, Iowa, says fourteen prisoners
confined in the Hendersen county jail
made their escape Sunday afternoon. The
jailer took an afternoon holiday, leaving a
young Swede in charge, and allowing the
prisoners the freedom of the corridor
Owing te the extreme heat, abcut
4 o'clock the prisoners called for a bucket
of water and when the deer
was opened te pass it in, the Swede was
knocked down and the prisoners es
caped te the weeds near by. Among the
number thus liberated wasTepp, the Sage
town murderer.
The jail, which is located in the base
ment of the county poorhouse, two miles
from Oquawaka, is a rickety shell and no
toriously unfitted for prison purposes.
During the confinement of the murderer
Bill Lee, who was hanged in the yard of
this jail some years age, it was necessary
te keep armed men en patrol day and
night.
It was reported yesterday that the pris
oners Tracy and Garrison have been recap
tured. Ajlarge body of armed men are scour
ing the weeds and the dense underbush sur
rounding the jail in which the escaped
prisoners might hide for many days with
out detection.
FAMILY TRAGEDY.
A Urutal Husband Fatally Heats his Wife,
and her Father and Mether.
Wilmington N. C.,JuIy 20.--S. Richard
son (colored) entered the house of Rebert
Phinncy, his father-in-law in the northern
part of the city last night, and beat his
mother-in-law Lucy Phinncy te death
and his wife, Fanny Richardson, and Mr.
Phinncy se severely that both are ex
pected te die. Richardson's wife had
separated from him and lived with her
parents, and the difficulty is supposed te
have originated from this circumstance.
The murderer was arrested and ledged in
jail te await trial.

Wimbledon, July 20.--There is geed
light te-day, but with variable and uncer
tain winds. In the competition for " any
rifle'' association cup, Brown and Gcrrish
of the American team, each shot in two
nominations ; Brown made 50 and 49, and
Gerrish 49 and 48 ; Baker, of the English
team, made 48. In the contest for the
" Arthur" prizes, out of a possible 50,
Brown made 49 and Gcrrish 46. In sheet,
ing for the ladies' prizes, any rifle, Ger
rish scored 31, Brown 29 and Baker 34.
The match en Saturday next will com
mence at an early hour, and two ranges
will be shot at before lunch. Brown's
sheeting this morning comprises 32 bull's
eyes which were made almost without a
break.
THE WALLACE COMMITTEE.
Continuing the Investigation of Alleged
Naturalization Frandx.
New Yerk, July 20. The Wallace com
mittee continued its session te-day examin
ing witnesses as te alleged naturalization
frauds in 18G8. Senater McDonald, who
cress-examined Commissioner Davenport,
seemed annoyed at the latter's deficient
hearing. Davenport objected te return
the naturalization paper taken from An An An
toneo Kurshell, and taking it from Sena Sena
eor McDonald, retained possession of it.

Distressing Railroad Accident at Leng
Branch.
Leng Br.vncit, N. J., July 20. Michael
Carrell, a gardener in Mr. Heey'spark,
stepped off the south-bound train in front
of the northward-bound express train this
morning at the West End station and was
cut in two. Carrroll was a sober and in
dustrious man of 40 years and married.
TERRIFIC STORM.
Carlisle Flooded by Last Night's Rain.
Carlisle, Pa., July 20. A terrific rain
storm occurred here last night, the water
running four feet deep in the reads and
many houses being flooded. The crops
are much injured. Many cattle were
killed by lightning.

Brighten Beach, L. I., July 20. The
races have been postponed until te-morrow.
The Drowning at Atlantic City.
At Atlantic City yesterday about eleven
o'clock, in common with ether visitors,
Mrs. Nesmith, wife of Lieutenant Nesmith
TJ. S. A., accompanied by Miss. Bessie
Fanshawe, the twelve-year-old child of
Jehn R. Fanshawe, of Germantown, to
gether with another little girl, Helen
Deaken, went in te bathe above the light
house. The locality chosen for their bath
is a very dangerous one, as it was between
the Breakwater and the lighthouse.
There is a strong eddy sweeping
around this Breakwater at all times,
and the current flews rapidly along
the beach for fifty yards, when it then
rushes out te sea. The place is net fre
quented much by bathers, and when Mrs.
Nesmith and her childish companions
sought this retired spot, it was with a view
of enjoying their bath in a quiet way. The
party, it is thought, endeaveree te wade
down the beach, intending te reach the
upper end of the bar, which stretches
from the lighthouse several squares
down the beach. There is a cove be
between the mainland and the bar, which
has already caused several drowning
cases this season in wading out, and it is
thought Mrs. Nesmith was suddenly pre
cipitated down the shallow embankment,
a few steps distant from which the water
if fifteen feet deep. Unable te swim she
for an instant clutched her young compan
ions, when she found herself in deep water
Soen they were swept from her and lest
beneath the waves. Tlie life beat in ser
vice further down the beach came te the
rescue en being signalledby persons en
the beach. All three were out of sight,
however.'by the time the beat came up.
The crew finally succeeded in recovering
the body of Mrs. Nesmith, which will be
taken te Philadelphia by her husband.

Payment of Rebel War Claims Impossible.
Te the Editor of the Sun Sir : A
Connecticut soldier asks in the Sun of the
13th inst. whether the Democrats, if they
win, will vote te " allow the rebel war
claims. " The constitution of the United
States answers the question in article 14,
section 4 of the amendments te the consti
tution :
But neither the United States
nor any state shall assume te pay any
debt or obligations incurred in aid of in
surrection or rebellion against the United
States, or any claim for the less or
emancipation of any slave ; but all such
debts, obligations and claims shall be
held illegal and void.
This is a complete answer te him, as it is
impossible te alter the constitution except
by the consent of three-fourths of all the
states. I would suggest that our brother
soldiers read the constitution carefully, an
alyzing each verse separately. Four years
age the same charge was made against Mr.
Tilden, and he premised that he would
veto each and every act that might be
passed by Congress te pay these claims.

thusiastically for General Hancock. I be
lieve him te be the right man."
The customary subscription list for the
Republican campaign fund heretofore
meaning "you're money or you're place "
is being vigorously handed about. On
one fleer of the government printing office,
where there are eighty employees, the
sum of $3.75 was collected. Twe negrees
from North Carolina were among the
number in the room, and they declined te
give anything. They stated most emphat
ically that they intended te vote for Gen.
Hancock.
