SUMMER LEISURE.
SOME USEFUL AND TIMELY HINTS ON
TRAMPING.
Hew te Spend Tour Vacation Pleasantly
and Profitably.
THE BOLD BAD CENSUS MAN.
Hew A California Lever Ascertained the
True State or His Sweet-heart's
Affections.
Hints Fer Tramping.
Frank Newman.
Every one has his own idea as te the best
way te spend a given time in the country.
Many think they have tried all the ways ;
and are as unsettled in mind hew te spend
the coming vacation as is the restaurant
frequenter about his dinner, when he cries
out each day, in despair, " Well, roast
beef rare." If you suggest "roughing
it," or " tramping," you may stir up a
rejoinder such as will put a step te any
kind suggestions en your part for the fu
ture. Your friend will picture te you
everything that is horrible in the way of
terture: gnats, black flies, besmeared
face, sere feet, hard bed, peer feed, worse
luck and musquitees. If yen are a wise
man you will at once conclude that your
friend has " roughed it" only in books or
else-has none of "the game" in him. New
there is a class that seen tires of contin
uous hotel life, but could stand ladies' so
ciety of an evening occasionally, and who
desire primarily an invigorating, changing,
out-deer lite ; and te such some practical
ideas may be acceptable. Take a compan
ion and go te some medium-sized hotel in
some central locality as regards the section
of country you desire te walk, ever, and
near some party et friends with whom ex
changes will be mutually agreeable. Some
times a party of four is better than merely
a companion ; but you must knew your
men pretty thoroughly, or you will come
home ahead of time.
Yeu may ask, What de you want of a
hotel if you are "roughing it?" The
answer is that it is a necessary clement in
the life that lies between hotel hie pure,
of which a great many are weary, and the
rough camp life that many de net enjoy.
Yeu avoid the excitement and ennui of
the one and the work and discomfort of
the ether. In ether words, you are inde
pendent ; and any one used te spending
vacations in various localities knows hew
important te his pleasure and success it is
te have himself upon a proper basis rela
tive te these with whom he must come in
contact. This all being settled, then,
what is the pregramme? Simply walking
the whole section ever. Remember, you
have no luggage ; you arc net hampered
with red or gun (unless you have started
te hunt or iisli). Yeu need carry no
quautitv of previsions. Yeu can take a
simple luncheon, if needed, or step at
some inn or farm house, if preferred.
I never knew a case of refusal save
one en Leng Island, and then I
was actually refused a drink of water.
If you wish you cau stay ever night
at a farm; you'll get geed fare and
bed, and it will be amazingly cheap. I have
known it te be only twenty-five cents.
Then you can return next day te hotel by
another read. Always manage te de this,
and never "double en yourself," as the
country people say. Anether point worth
noticing : don't imagine you must lay in a
full assortment of walking apparel, or
carry an overcoat, coffee, tea, whiskey,
rubber beets, a ten-pound telescope, pick
ax, bag and revolver. I have found it best
te tramp in an ordinary grey suit, the
coat a short sack, with side pockets ; a
soft felt hat, or helmet, and low shoes with
gaiter tops ; these latter keep out much
dust and keep off many brambles while
permitting fiec circulation, which is very
important, if you would avoid sere feet.
A geed stout stick is very acceptable (net
an alpenstock). I never found use for a re
volver, but I have for a stout bit of hickory.
Men seldom molest you, even tramps, but
dogs may ; and if it had net been for such
a stick en one occasion this bit of advice
would net have been written. That
whiskey is useless en a tramp is experi
ence, science common sense. There is
nothing that has such staying qualities as
coffee ; it rcpletes the system after waste,
and cold water does the rest. The former
can generally be had at an inn or farm
house, the latter at the same or in springs
and brooks. I have had te travel all day
without either because of the peculiar sec
tion and drought. If you are likely te
run such risks take coffee in a flask. It
carries just as easily as whisky.
I have found a piece of home-made
brown bread in each side pocket the best
luneheen; it is solid, pleasant, staying
feed, easily carried and requiring no but
ter. Always rest before and after eating ;
carry a pocket compass and pocket magni
fying glass (it is astonishing what beauti
ful things one will discover along the way
by the use of this little instrument), and
if going for "sighting" from mountain
tops have a marine glass strapped ever your
shoulder. Upen entering a forest always
note the course of the sun and the direc
tion of the wind. The latter will save
many an exhausting tramp.
"Avoid "short cuts" unless you are
"sure-headed." I have found that if any
path is traceable it is better te fellow it,
for animals as well as men naturally take
the fewest and surest steps toward any
desired spot. If you are descending from
aheighthandcansee your desired haven
all the time as a village under a moun
tain it is then merely a matter of chiece
whether you will go around or straight
ever. If you get confused in a forest
don't undertake te make out a course,
but retrace your steps te a recognized
spot and get fresh bearings. It is better te
lese time and pleasure than one's self. If
a person is unused te tramping and there
is as much te learn in this, of its kind, as
in anything it is well te break a few
branches along the way as you go through
a forest, and te let them point in the
direction you are going, else you may net
known which course te take after you
have have found your trail. It is a
common thing te circle around
in the weed, and it is astonishing
hew one persists in turning te the
right rather than the left. If you watch
yourself you will detect it in traversing
any read or path. A friend undertook te
take me te a spot several miles distant,
through a section known te him and net
te the rest, and brought us out en a hill
just back of his house. Nothing that
could be said would cause him te change
his course. I have tramped the better part
of a day in a field of nettles higher than
my head, and could net get out till even
ing and the setting sun gave me a point te
guide by, and thus make break. Te say
that I was nettled would be a mild way of
I putting it.
Always manage te return by a different
read. If you can, take a valley read out
and a mountain read in ; this will general
ly give you a fine sunset view. It is well
also te keep the shady side each way, fix
ing your trip accordingly. Umbrellas are
net bad things te take along. Tramping
in this way requires very little of trap
pings, and an umbrella is no incumbrance.
If you wish, you can stay away nights and
make a round trip, but this will prove
wearisome unless you are a regular pedes
trian ; better walk the country straight
along and be done with it than pay both
hotel and tramping bills. Te the question,
What fun is there in tramping back and
forth every day from a hotel? my experi
ence answers: Any amount of fun; as well as
increase of knowledge, novel situations,
opportunities for a study of nature, and of
human nature as well ; constant surprise
in scenery new lakes, falls, ravines, trout
peels, caves, mountain tops, strange in
tercourse with often still stranger people,
chances for noting the peculiar habits of
birds, beasts and hshes ; an acquaintance
with trees, insects, forests and streams ;
sharper insight into things generally,
keener faculties, keener relish for life,
better spirits, and a general arousing of
the whole system. A man fretted in a
matter in daily life will often " go out and
walk it off;" suppose he walks off, in sen
sible distances according te his physical
capacity, all the frettings of a long sea
son, and this in cheerful company, amid
varying scenes, among cool mountain
breezes? With some pleasing object in
view, surrounded with the new and attrac
tive scenes, you will net only gain health
and happiness but a fund of information
that will stir up the whole place and call
down the thanks of all the hotel proprie
tors and visitors in that section ; for it is
astonishing hew much people fail te ob ob
serve in what is around them. If you
doubt all this, try it yourself.
The Dark Herse.
Hew Susan Smlffey Was Deceived by a
Begus Census Taker.
San Francisce Pest.
Probably the meanest piece of cold celd cold
beooded deception ever practiced en a
woman occurred out in Western Addition
the ether day. It seems that the belle of
that important suburb of our municipality
is a Miss Susan Smiffey, and whom a vig
orous rumor, kept iu circulation by her
less favored sisterhood, credited with being
a desperate little flirt in fact, what Billy
Rice, the minstrel, used te call a " false
hearted crekay." At all events her affec
tions were of sufficiently indefinite a
quality te cause her two most favored
visitors te leek upon each ether with the
most vindictive feelings common te hated
rivals. These gentlemen who were re
spectively a city hall clerk, with eye
glasses and freckles, named Pliff, and a
red-headed dry goods manipulator called
Diggs occupied the intervals devoted te
gloomily sitting each ether out three even
ings a week te fruitless attempts te dis
cover which of tlu two was really the com
ing man in the matrimonial race, se te
speak.
Last Thursday morning Miss Smiffy, in
response te a business-like ring, admitted
a middle-aged party with a black beard,
and wearing blue goggles, and a long-tailed
ulster.
" I am taking the census, mum," he
said, opening a Hat book en the piano, and
getting out some blanks, "just leek sharp
please, and answer the necessary ques
tions." Miss Smiffey trembled a little, as women
always de for some reason when talking
te a government official, and said she'd
try.
" Lem'me see your name's 'Smiffey, I
believe first name?"
"Susan."
"Middle name?'
"Haven'tget any, sir."
" Come new, young woman, no prevari
cation. Are you sure you haven't get a
middle name somewhere and are trying te
conceal it?"
"Ne, sir ; indeed I haven't," said the
young lady, turning very pale, "I wouldn't
deceive you."
" You'd better net, mum. The penalty
is twenty-five years at haul labor, or
both."
" Gracious me !"
" Fact, mum. New then, let's see
what's next. Ah ! yes hew often mar
ried?" " Net once yet."
" Ahum. Going te be, I s'pese ? Been
asked, eh ?"
" Oh ! yes, sir ; several times !"
" Call it six times," said the census
man, making an entry. " What's next ?
Ah ! yes is your back hair false ?"
" M m must I answer that ?"
" Of course you must. Don't trifle with
the Uuitcd States government, mum.
Come new "
" Well, it's sorter ; that is, kinder "
" That'll de ; we'll call it mixed. Teeth
sound?"
" Yes, sir !" with much emphasis.
"Don't get excited. Let's see I'll put
your age down as twenty-five. The United
States never allows us te take a woman's
age en oath. They will lie ; can't help it I
guess."
"I'm just eighteen. I don't care
whether the Government likes it or net,"
said the citizeness, snappishly.
" Of course, of course ; they al! say that.
Pay attention, please. What size cor
set?" "Eh?"
"Must answer, mum. Remember the
penalty. Hew many inches around the
waist?"
" Well, if you must knew, sixteen. But
I thinks it's just shame "
"Ne remarks, if you please. Ahem!
We'll call in nineteen. They generally
threw off about three inches, I find. Size
of shoes?"
' ' Twe but I can wear one and a "
" I'll return you as a Ne. 4. That's
about what a " threer' always says. Any
beaux?"
"I say, any beaux? and be very care
ful about your answer, mum. The Wash
ington authorities are very particular en
this point. Has everything te de with the
next census, you see. New, hew many
sweethearts?"
"Well of course there are some gen
tlemen coming here and "
"Of course there are; I'e get you
down in the ' Geed Leeks ' space as ' A.
A. I. I. handsome." Se, of course, you
have plenty of admirers. All the Gov
ernment requires, however, is the principal
ones."
' Well," said the young lady, somewhat
melified, "there is Jimmy Pliff, and Tem
Diggs, and "'
" Held up, right there ! Which of 'em
de you intend te marry? said the enumer
ator of population earnestly.
" Oh ! neither of them . There's
ahem ! there's a splendid gentleman
named Scudberry Charlie Scudberry
perhaps you knew him? He has big
brown and beautiful curly hair, and "
"And de these these ether gentle
men Pliff and Diggs knew of the ex
istence of this this fellow, Scudberry ?"
" Oh, no ! I'm tee smart for that. I
just tag them along te buy ice cream and
caramels, and take me te the theatre. It's
the biggest fun ! Charlie knows all about
it, you see, and he calls himself the the
eh, yes ! the dark horse!"
" Oh, he does, does he !" reared the cen
sus man, jerking off his wig and goggles
and revealing the enraged features of Mr.
Themas Diggs. I wish him joy of his bar
gain, and I'll give him just six months te
get a divorce from the most two-faced lit
tle cat en the Pacific Coast:77 And he
banged the deer like a pile-driver behind
time as he stalked out.
And as Susan confided te Scudberry's
left lapel that evening, she had never felt
se utterly what-de-you-call-it in the whole
course of her thing-um-bob.
Chloroforming During Sleep.
The possibility of chloretorming a per
son in sleep, withent waking him, having
been disputed in a recent murder trial. Dr.
J. V. Quimby, of Jersey City, was led te
test the question experimentally. There
suits were presented in a paper before the
section of medical jurisprudence at the
meeting of the American medical associa
tion a few days age. Dr. Quimby made
arrangements with a gentleman te
enter his room when he was asleep
and apply chloroform te him. He did
this with entire success, transfer
ring the person from natural te artificial
sleep without arousing him. He used
about three drachms of Squibb's chlore-
lerm and occupied about seven minutes in
the operation. The second case was a boy
of thirteen who had refused te take ether
for a miner operation. Dr, Quimby ad
vised the mother te give the boy a light
supper and put him te bed. She did se,
and Dr. Quimby, calling when the boy was
asleep, administered the chloroform and
performed the operation without awaken
ing the boy. The third case was a boy of
ten years suffering from an abscess,
and the same course was pursued
with equal success. Twe important infer
ences may be drawn from these cases, Dr.
Quimby said. Miner surgical operations
may be done with perfect safety and much
mere pleasantly than in the ordinary way,
and secondly, a person somewhat skilled
in the use of chloroform may enter a
sleeping apartment and administer chloro
form with evil intentions while a person is
asleep. Hence the use of this drug in the
hands of a criminal may become an effect
ive instrument iu the accomplishment of
his nefarious designs.
m
Perseverance With the Drowned.
In a recent communication te the French
Academy, Prof. Fert asserts that he was
enabled te restore te life a child three years
old, by practicing artificial respiration en it
four hours, commencing three hours and
a-half after apparant death. He mentions
also a case in which Dr. Fournel, of Bil Bil
lanceurt, reanimated, in July, 1878, an ap
parently drowned person by four hours ar
tificial respiration begun one hour after
the patient was taken from the water. At
this season, when cases of drowning arc
apt te be frequent, the possible benefit that
may come from a presevcring effort te
revive victims of drowning, should encour
age friends net te despair of their resuscita
tion, even after several hours of seemingly
fruitless labor.
