FBIDAT EVENING, JULY 16, 1880.
Oar Heme Wheat-Crep.
Gcrmantewn Telegraph.
It is very satisfactory te see tliat the
farmers of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Del
aware and Maryland are paying increased
attention te the raising of wheat. Twenty
live or thirty years age lire crop in all this
region was very much neglected and we
had te depend upon the far West looking
even te California te make up our supply
for home consumption. It is true that
there were many things te. discourage the
growing of this crop, and making ether
crops much mere prelitable. The fly, the
weevil, rust, mildew, fcc., played havoc
with the crop, se that there was no cer
tainty in it. Against the ravages of Hes
sian tly alone there seemed te be no pro
tection We have seen fields of from twen
ty te thirty acres of wheat se utteily dc-
htreyetl as net te pay ier me cuiiiug.
lint this has passed. There arc at this
tima few crops" that suffer much less from
insect pests than wheat. "We have seen
scores of fields this season withiu an area
of ten miles around Germontewn which
could net be surpassed anywhere en the
face of the earth. If they did net yield
forty bushel te the acre, then this quantity
is tee great te grew upon an acre. This
success has iniused mere confidence in the
general farmer, and he new grows as much
wheat as the extent of his land, in the sys
tem of mixed husbandry which is wisely
followed, will warrant. This increase in
the several states alluded te is very nearly
if net entirely suflicieat te meet our home
wants, and has a tendency te mere or less
fix prices which cannot at all times be
subjected te the fluctuations of the West.
Beside the iucreaseef the crop here, the
New England states are also awakening te
the necessity and advantages of appropri
ating an increased breadth of land te
wh a1 as vie 1 as te corn, and thus make
themselves mere independent of the west
ern productions, for which they find they
have te p.iy a premium ever what they
can grew for themselves at their own
doers.

The Turnip Crep.
Gcrmuiilewii Telegraph.
There is no crop that the farmer puts in
the ground that pays him better than the
turnip. We are amaic that with some
persons it is looked upon as of little ac
count ; but it has never received the con
sideration te which it is really entitled ;
and these who turn-up their noses at it arc
net genuine farmers. It is a crop more
over that is put in at a time when the
hurrying work of the season is ever; when
it occupies ground that has already been
used ler something else. The cultivation
al- e, say of from one te two acres of tur
nips, involves comparatively little labor.
The crop, tee, is harvested in November,
when there is almost no ether labor en the
laiai te interfere with it.
As te the variety of seed te sew, we be
lieve there is no turnip equal te the Puip'e
Tep. A top-dressing of bone manure is al
most indispensable te an abundant crop.
Fer an early crop take the Early Flat
Dutch and sew broadcast, and new is the
time. The Purple Tep for hc regular farm
crop. This should be sewed in drills thirty
inches apa.r, and when the turnips are the
sue of a hickory nut, thin out te 8 or 10
inches apart iu the row. They seldom fail
in allbidiug a satisfastery ciep. The crop
eau be put in the first half of August.
Where laud is a little short, sew among thi
coin at the last working. They will net
interfere in the least with that crop, gen
erally, and very little when it is har
vested. Be sure always te procure seed fiem es
tablished seed houses of reputation, and
use that grown here instead of in Europe,
if you wish the best and safest aiticle.
