A Kataral Ice Hense.
One of the Summer Attractions of a North
ern Mew Jersey Comity.
Middletown (X. Y.) Argus.
A remarkable ice gorge near Middle
town, Sussex county, in the rear of the
Blue mountain, is attracting attention,
and is much visited by the levers of
curious sights. The ice gorge is several
hundred yards in extent, 10 te 30 feet
deep, with caves and clefts in the rocks
where the ice lies. It is located a very
short distance from the mountain. The
shade at the gorge is very dense,
the sun apparently never penetrat
ing it. The bottom of the gorge is
tilled with ice, and the little caves and
crevices are filled with it. It is a
natural ice houses ; hundreds of tens
might be taken out without appreciably
decreasing the whole. Much of it no
doubt has lain there for years, the mass
gradually melting and being added te each
year. The thermometer, which registered
in the 90's in Newton, marked 38 degrees
at the bottom of this gorge, tee cold for
one te remain there any length of time. A
few feet from one end of the gorge a spring
et the most delicious, sparkling water bub
bles up. The water in this spring stands
at 34 degrees about as cold as one could
comfortably drink it.
