Summer Bending Timely Campaign Liter
ature. L. D. Blackmere holds with Wm. Black
iu the lirst rank efliving English novelists,
and every new work from the pen which
wrote " Laura Deene" and the " Maid of
Skeer," is awaited with interest and read
with eagerness. "Mary Anerly" is a
Yorkshire tale, exhibiting the best powers
of its author in delineating character no
less than scsnerv and provincial life. The
unique and attractive binding in which the
publishers have issued it make this edition
one of the most inviting volumes that the
summer traveler is looking for te pack m
his hand satchel. Harper & Rre., ew
Yerk. Pp. 510. Fer sale by C. II. Barr,
Centre Square, Lancaster.
Mr. Barr has also laid en our table aud
has for sale Benjamin Vaughn Abbet's
"Judge and Jury" a book which is net a
catch-penny " Every Man His Own Law
yer," but an interesting, intelligent and
popularly written treatise en the leading
topics of the law of the land. The main
aspects and general principles of modern
jurisprudence, as new well settled, arc
presented in a style that makes the work
one for the library and counting room as
well as the lawyer's desk. Without an at
tempt te make it a text book for the pro
fession or a digest of the reports, it serves
admirably te inform a large class of
readers who are daily confronted with al
lusions te the statutes and decisions, and
who above all want te knew hew the
ancient and established legal principles
have been construed and applied te mod
ern American institutions. In his effort
te provide this the author has been a sig
nal success. Harper & Bre., Xew Yerk.
Pp. 4.J2.
Ilarreun & Bierstadt, 08 and CO Kcadc
street, New Yerk, publish a very artistic
alletype portrait of Gen. W. S. Hancock,
made from lile since lus nomination, au ex
cellent likeness, printed en heavy plate pajter
15x20 inches, with facsimile signature;
single copies sent by mail en receipt of 50
cents, 10 copies $4. The excellence of
the alletype picture is that it docs net
fade, spot, nor turn yellow.
The well-known publishing house of
Hubbard Bres., of Philadcphia, have iu
preparation and will seen issue the "Life
of Gen. Hancock," written by his old-time
friend, Hen. Jehn W. Ferney. The career
of the brilliant soldier who is seen te be
transferred te the White Heuse furnishes
material for a volume which in deep and
thrilling interest has rarely been equaled
in the annals of American biography. It is
fortunate that its preparation has been as
signed te Cel. Ferney, who for twenty-live
years has been known as one of the ablest
editors and most brilliant writers in Amer
ica. His known ability and his personal
intimacy with Gen. Hancock arc a sufli
cient guaranty that the book will be full,
complete and authoritative a volume of
ermanent value and in this respect wide
ly different from ordinary campaign litera
ture. It will be sold only by subscription,
and must meet with a very large sale. The
volume will also contain a sketch of W. H.
English, Democratic candidate for vice
president.
