" Mr. Freudc sends us the following lit
tle novel," say the Chicago Tribune :
It was autumn.
Yes, merry, golden-tinted autumn. The
sun poured down its mellow rays en the
laughing fields of grain, and all nature
seemed te rejoice in the gladness of the
ample harvest. The little birds twittered
nml saiin- their sweetest and cheeriest
notes in the branches of the oak trees that
skirted the feet of a cloud topped lull,
while the big ones sat still and looked at
them. Far away te the right lay a vast
marsh, in which water cresses, sweet
smelling sedges, and bullfrogs gently
mingled.
Don't forget that it was a pretty sight.
Suddenly a beat is seen shoetiusr out
from the "messy banks that encircle the
marsh like a ehaplet of laurel. In the
little craft are seated a young man and a
maiden; he strong-'imbed and handsome,
his face bronzed by the kisses of the burn
ing sun and scent-laden breezes ; she fair
and delicate like the lily, or a Chicago
baseb.ill club.
With powerful strokes he sends the
beat sheeting through the water, while
the ripples fall away en cither side. Sud
denly the maiden utters a faint shriek,
and a pallor e'crspreads her lovely coun
tenance. She lias seen a bullfrog.
One hand dropped nerveless by her
side, and from it fell her hat a dainty
thing of straw and canvas trimmed with
(lowers. The young man at once plunged
into the water te lecever the hat. The
cruel waves closed ever his fair young
head, the last thing seen being the parting
in the middle of it.
Hut he emitted te come up again.

The cabbage, the turnip and the tobacco

cal, that the tieatinent applied te one is
efficacious for all ; ami he knows its pro
tective power ever cabbage.
Let the tobacco planter, at least, try
soot en his plant beds, and net be deter
red by a remedy because of its simplicity.
