I once knew a ploughman, Beb Fletcher his name, Who was old and was ugly, And se was his dame ; Vet they lived quite contented, And free from all strife. Beb Fletcher the ploughman. And Judy his wife. As the morn streaked the east, And the night fled away. They would rise up for labor, Refreshed for the day ; And the song et the lark, As it rose en the gale. Found Beb at his plough And his wife at the pail. A neat little cottage. In irent of a grove. Where In youth they first gave Their young hearts up te love, Was the solace et age, And te them doubly dear, As it called up the past. With a smile or a tear. Each tree had its thought, And the vow could impart, That mlngicd in youth The warm wish of the heart ; The thorn was still there. And the blossoms it bore, And the song from the top. Seemed the same as before. When the curtain et night Over nature was spread. And Beb had returned Frem the plough te his .shed. Like the dove en her nest. He reposed from all care. If his wife and his youngsters Contented were there. I have passed by his deer, When the evening was gray. And Uhj hill and the landscape Were fading away, And have heard Irem the cottage, With grateful surprise. The voice of thanksgiving Like incense arise. I have thought en the proud. Who would leek down with scorn On the neat little cottage. The grove and the thorn ; And felt that the riches And tinsels of lire Were dress te contentment With Beb and his wife. Mild Winter and Crews. Ueruiautewn Telegraph. The unusually mild weather of the past winter Las been favorable for the increase of the crew, and increased they have te a very considerable extent. They have also become very tame and approach thickly populated places as freely as they did forty years age. Ge in almost any direction from Germantown and we suppose the case is the same elsewhere and we come upon the pleasant sight of this glossy bird watching us with its glistening eyes as it grandly passes ever head. Seme of the fields shone with their glossy backs seek ing out insect feed as industriously as if they were paid by the hour for their labor. Net a grub or worm dare show itself that does net speedily fall a vfctim. In a day thousands upon thousands are destroyed by its ever-watchful instincts. Stray corn left in the fields never escape it ; and even acorns are eaten when hard pressed. But all tins kind of feed must be iu a soft state before it consumes it ; and for this purpose they are gathered up and buried, and in order that they may be concealed from thieves it is carefully put into a Hele, cov ered and peuuded down with the bill. In long, cold winters the crew suffers greatly for feed and water ; for the latter it fiics almost daily at times fifty or sixty miles, when an opening may be found m the ice. It gees for days without eating and has hard work te get enough te sup port life. In fact many die of starvation during the long spells of severe weather. We have sceu at least a thousand upon a single barn helping themselves te insects and from this it may be estimated the amount of geed they de te the farm. It is net te be denied that they de some harm also, but it is a mere mite en that side of the ledger. They may eat some birds' eggs, or even gobble-up a young bird new and then. But, with all their strength, they are cowardly and are driven away by even a little wren. The king bird is its mortal enemy, and fiercely attacks it if it approaches anywhere near the tree en which may be its nest ; and they arc net let off easily, as they are pursued some times a mile, darting upon their huge enemy and sometimes actually lighting upon its back and pecking away at it, compelling Jim Crew te resort te all kinds of gyration te free itself. But with all said against it that it is possible te say, there is no bird se ad vantageous te the farmer as the crew, always excepting the house sparrow, when it shall once get sufficiently numerous te spread out upon the farms, it new confin ing itself mostly te cities, towns and ether thickly populated places. Cisterns for Farm Buildings. Germantown Telegraph. In the endeavor te have everything as convenient as possible about farm houses and farm buildings, there are few things mere worthy of being cared for than cis terns te held the rain water from the reef. Even where pumps are supplied it is often an advantage te have cisterns in addition, as soft water, which pumps will net always supply, is of great value. At anv rate it often happens that though there may be a pump convenient and water fur nished by it all one can desire, even the little labor that a pump requires for a sin gle horse or cow, becomes a great task when many are te be supplied. We knew of one farm where seventy-five head of cows, mere or less, arc en hand ; and all the water they require has te be furnished from a pump ; and it is no small job te de. Yet en this very farm the land lies se con venient that a cistern could be built en an elevation a little above the cattle yard, and all the water from the reef could go in it, and be drawn off into the cattle yard by its own natural flew without pump or labor of any kiud. Se it often happens for household supplies. A cistern can be built which would cost little, and yet save the women folks generally over worked many an hour's labor, besides giving them a quality of water they all se much desire. There is a prevalent idea that they cost a great deal te make ; but it is far less than is generally imagined. If the land is solid say either of clay or rotten rock the sides of the natural ground may be shaped like a wall, and a lining of mortar, say half an inch, put' en before the final cement coat is given. But if there is any chance of settling, se as te crack the mor tar framework,a four-inch brick-work may be built around first. Most ground is, however, firm enough for the purpose. The mortar as it is laid en te form the lining or framework of the tank should be very well worked by the trowel. The object is te work out all the air. It is the air-spaces in the wall that make it porous, and it is through the pores that the water escapes. A working of the trowel back wards and forwards a few times ever the soft mortar expeis the air and closes the pores. This is especially important te be borne in mind when applying the cement. This need net be put en very thick. The merest film, if properly worked, is suffi cient. KIDNEV WORT rOB SALE AT tOCH era' Drug Stere, 9 East King street. O.BorUe,et Manchester, Ontario Ce, N.
