But one thing we ought te remind you ef: We may appear te be at a disadvantage when we are net, because of certain tactics sometimes employed, which we de net care te use, viz., the pretending te make re ductions when none are made. We use reductions te clear stocks. That is perfectly honorable, and it is necessary in a large business. The losses thereby incurred, though sometimes considerable, are trifling in compari son with the benefit te remaining stocks. New then, anyone who will take measures te find out where the lowest prices are, compare sample with sample, price with price, will find we are net a whit behind ANYBODY, net even in a single item, se far as we knew; and that we are below EVERYBODY en almost everything. TUESDAY EVENING, JULY 6, 1880. CORRESPONDENCE LErTERS FROM DOWN EAST ANO THE kMPJRK OF THE SOUTH. Sights and Sounds in the Bay State Tidings Frem Texas and an Invita tion te Emigrate Thither. Dr. Greene en a Visit te the Bay State. Newtonville, Mass., June 29, 1880. I have new been here two weeks mak ing my head or night quarters at my brother's beautiful home in this town, "W. C. Greene, attorney, which is one of the suburbs of this exceedingly interesting city. A full description of the works of interest we have already visited would oc cupy one-quarter of all your pages. Let me briefly enumerate a few of them. First is Mr. Baker's (of the firm of Grever & Baker's 'sewing machines) gardens, houses, barns and museum at Wcllesley. The grounds occupy probably CO acres, laid out with most magnificent lawns in vari ously divided lets. Seme of the plats are as smooth as a mirror, and the grass is cut once a week, as evenly as though done with a razor. The flower departments are unique, in the shape of hearts, cresses, open books, stars, circles and triangles, with every variety of rare and costly flowers. The barn is handsome, and prob ably cost mere than $25,000 ; en the out side arc numerous paintings of horses and animals, done by eminent painters. At tached te the stable is an observatory about 100 feet high, about 7 rooms, one ever another, each one containing rare paiutings, engravings and curiosities, with different colored glass windows for you te leek out en tue ucautttui views around hills, weeds, artificial ponds, het houses, &c. A few miles away are the wonderful grounds of Mr. Uunne ville, covering perhaps 100 acres, probably worth with all its attachments, of buildings, conservatories, nurscries,&c., $250,000. Nothing ever shown in a fairy scene by mortals could give you an idea of the remarkable arrangement of the trees, spaces, lets, embankments, &c. I cannot describe it ; I never saw anything like it in my life. Thousands of evergreen trees, artistically changed into hundreds of dif ferent forms. Seme perfect cones three feet up and twenty feet high ; ethers square ; ethers a cone with an inverted cone at the top ; ethers with a square hole right through the top ; the hedges, hun dreds of feet long, trimmed as accurately as though done with a square and compass, all shapes, triangular, square, oval. &c. ; then arches of evergreens ever thirty feet high, shaped like the triumphal arch of NapolceD in Paris. I find it no use te at tempt any further description ; I'll only add that they set out in their grounds every spring ever 40,000 common and rare exotic flowers. Then there arc a thousand ether costly houses and grounds open te the inspection of strangers. I'll briefly give you as they come te my mind ether objects of attrac tion. The eldest college in America at Cambridge, with at least twenty buildings en the grounds, some of them immense and very expensively constructed. Then, adjoining, the celebrated museum of Agassiz,"Vashingten's headquarters in the Revolution of 1776. The houses of Long fellow, "Washington Allston ; then the observatory and astrenmical instrument manufactory of Alvan Clark & Sens. I saw an object glass there which they are making for a telescope, about thirty inches in diameter, that he had made for him in Paris, and the first cost was $1,100. Twe men were grinding it. Mr. Clark told me it takes from three te six months te finish, and when completed he gets $5,000 for it. As you knew, the largest and finest telescopes in the world am made here. He recently completed one for the Russian government, for which he received $50,000. Then there are in Bosten the Technological and Natural History society's museum, Kimball's museum, Faneuil hall, or the cradle of liberty ; Fan cuil hall market, about one-fifth of a niile long ; the tea wharf where the Yankee In dians threw overboard the tea ; the old state house where the first bleed was shed at the commencement of hostilities be tween the colonies and England, called wrongly Bosten massacre, which occurred in sight of the above building en King (new State) street, en March 5th 1770. Then there is the common right in the heart of the city with ever seventy-five acres of play grounds. Then comes the navy yard, Bunker nill monument, then the beaches en the harbor or ocean, where you can see thousands in bathing. Steam cars take you for ten and five cents te any of them. At Nantucket the beach is nine miles long. When you near a beautiful view of the great Atlantic ocean the waters come dashing in at intervals of a -few mo ments, caused by the ever pulsating waters twice a day. The waters come washing up as though they would submerge all the land, but by the fiat of Ged they step every day at certain boundaries and grad ually go out again. Ne one can contem plate half the views of sight in and around this city in three months and de them jus tice. C. A. Greene, M. D. Texas Correspondence. Hew An Old Lancasterian Receives His Heme Newspaper. Round Reck, Williamson Ce.,Texas, June, 30, 1880. Almest twenty years with their bright and dark shades have passed away since I reamed ever the lovely city of Lan caster, which is yet fresh in my memory. trusting that the Intelli gencer will continue te prosper and shine like an electric light amid darkness. I would sooner dispense with the most nec essary household article than be deprived of glancing ever its columns. At times my heart is filled with grief when the news reaches me that one of my old friends has been severed from the chain of friendship once se firmly linked togeth er. Peace te these departed ones who arc slumbering beneath the sod ; te these who are yet inhaling the pure atmosphere at Lancaster, I join bauds te express our grat itude te the Supreme Being for guiding us safely te the declining stage of human life. Herace Greeley once said, "Yeung man go West." I say, "Come Seuth te Texas." Williamson county possesses advantages unsurpassed by any in the state. The soil is of a black, waxy nature, and frejn three te twelve feet deep, which can be bought from two te four dollars per acre, unim proved. The improved land runs from four te twenty dollars per acre, according te location. The principal productions are cotton, corn, wheat, eats, barley, Irish and sweet potatoes, and in fact any thing adapted te the climate. While Wil liamson is classed among the agricultural counties, yet the stock interest is net ne glected. Of late years improved horses, cattle and sheep have been successfully raised, paying handsomely for the invest ment. Grass is found in abundance throughout the county, the winter being mud, tnerelere lecd them only during a short season of the year. The International and Great Northern railway is running through the ceuuty from east te west, giving us convenient facilities for disposing of our surplus products. The population will number 1,500 and I can conscientiously assert that nowhere in this bread land can be found a mere moral aud law-abidins: people. Every community is building up institu tions for the elevation and progress of mankind. Churches of every denomination and secret societies flourish throughout the land. The school system is perhaps net se perfect as in elder settled countries, although several of high standing and imp utation are flourishing in our midst. The principal towns arc Round Reck, George town, Liberty Skiff, Bagdad and Florence, of which the first named takes the lead, it being located en the main trunk of the I. and G. N. railroad, at a distance of eighteen miles from the capital of the state. Scarcely four years age the pres ent town site was well-known te sportsmen as a desirable hunting place. Deer and antelope were seen in droves where te-day stand many im posing structures and neat dwellings with a population of 1,500. Time nor space will net permit mc te give you a de scription in detail of our prosperous coun ty and little city. Suffice te say that the future prospects arc bright, and the day is close at hand when our sister cities will leek upon Round Reck with an envious eye. I would call the attention of my friends and all these who are seeking homes in this sunny clime te the fact that there arc many thousand acres that can he bought cheap, aud en joed terms in this county. Yeu will hear from me again at an early date. Our people are rejoicing ever the nomination of Gen. Hancock. Three cheers for Gen. Hancock and best wishes te your paper.
