LANCASTER DAltY INTELLIGENCER. FRIDAY JULY.2, i880.

te the epicurean appetite, and the table
was arranged in thoroughly artistic
fashion. Seated around the festive beard
the feast of reason and flew of soul began
in real earnest. The president gave "the
boys" greeting in a few fitting remarks ;
Mr. A. Bern Hirsh read a well-prepared
class history which was received with
great merriment; Mr. Clare Carpenter
read a poem en "Class Duty," which elic
ited applause, and several ether members
of the class made impromptu addresses,
and a letter was read from Mr. Harry E.
Michael, a member of the class, who was
unavoidably absent by reason of business
engagements in Philadelphia.
The toasts drank were as fellows :
"Our Scheel-boy Days " Responded te by
Mr. Harry . icisicy.
" The Northeast Class Roem" Responded te
bv Mr Clias. E. Downey.
"Our Alma Mater" Kespended teby Mr.
.1. Frank RaiT.
' Tin- Fourth Estate " Kespended te by Mr.
Herbert Johnsten.
"The Healing Art" Kespended te by Dr.
Thes. 15. Cox.
The class unanimously voted the affair
worthy of repetition one year hence, and
te Capt. II. II. Power, mine genial host of
the City hotel, who was indefatigable in
his labors in this direction, was due in no
small degree the success that signalized
the celebration.
ltlIt(iLAU LAST NIGHT.
Tlie Thieves Kttcape, Leaving Part of Their
Plunder Itehlnd.
Sometime last night the hotel of E. B.
Boyd, at Union Square, ltaphe township,
was entered by hmcvcs, who stele the
money drawer, containing something ever
$2, a gun, demijohn of whisky, a let of
clothing and some previsions.. After
leaving the hotel the thieves visited the
premises of B. F. Diffendcrfcr, about a
mile away. Here they broke into the sta
ble and stele a horse and wagon. At an
early hour this morning as a neighbor of
Mr. Diffeuderfer was walking along the
read near his house he leund the stolen
hei.se. The animal was lying en one side
of a pest fence, which was partially
broken down, while the wagon te which
he was hitched, was en another. The
empty demijohn and the money drawer
were lying near by, but nothing else was
1 e be seen. The thieves were tracked te Mt.
.ley, where all traces of them were lest.
Yesterday afternoon two suspicious
looking characters were seen around
Boyd's hotel and it is supposed that they
wei e the parties who committed the bur
glary. It is probable that the thieves were
intoxicated at the time of the burglary or
that the horse became unmanageable, but
be that as it may they succeeded in mak
ing their escape with nearly all of their
plunder.
Tobacco Kepert.
The monthly report of J. S. Gans's Sen
& Ce., tobacco brokers, New Yerk, just
issued, reports the seed leaf market of that
city as fellows :
A geed business has been done, chiefly
in 187!) tobacco by packers' samples, most
of which was taken by manufacturers ;
thus confuting their oft repeated assertion
of having large stocks of raw material en
hand.
Pennsylvania retains its pre-eminence,
while Ilousatenic of which our supply is
limited, is very favorably looked upon.
Frem new until the proper sampling
time arrives, we de net expect much activ
ity; it is tee late te sell 1879 tobacco by
packing samples, and with greatly reduced
stocks of old tobacco, large sales are out of
question ; as far as expert is concerned,
momentarily the prospect is peer ; but we
feel satisfied that ere many weeks have
passed a fair demand will have set in.
We trust that by this time (notwith
standing the geed prospects for fall trade).
packers will have seen the felly of enrich-1
tug pieduccrs in an uncalled for man
ner ; and that when the buying season for
the 80 crop arrives, their operations will
be carried en mere prudently than has been
the case for the past two years.
During the past month 1,500 cases of
1878 and 3,000 cases of 1879 Pennsylvania
tobacco was sold in New Yerk, most of it
at private terms. Lew grades arc quoted
at 12(fi)13 cents and wrappers at 18(2:$5
cents.
A NEW BOAT.
Republican Excursionists te tic Accommo
dated. As seen as the news of General
Hancock's nomination reached Fite's
Eddy, en the Susquehanna, Clark Bestick,
who is no less distinguished as a ship
builder than as a hotel keeper, set te
work te build a geed staunch beat te
carry all his Republican friends te the
head waters- of Salt river, early in No
vember next. The beat, which is almost
completed, is built of the stoutest timber
and is guaranteed te remain seaworthy
for at least twenty-five years about the
length of time the Republicans will need
it, if they shall happen te live se long.
The beat will be thoroughly tested dur
ing the summer se as te assure the safety
of all passengers, and will be furnished
the excursionists free of charge the only
condition exacted being that Mr. Bestick
shall held the privilege of naming the
captain.

The Cause Discovered.
Most of tlie readers whose eyes scan these
pages have suffered from headache, lassitude,
nausea or pains in the back; but we doubt if
they knew what the cause was. In nine cases
out of ten it was some trouble with the kid
neys or liver. This is a truth which has just
become known, and the result which Warner's
Sate Kidney and Liver Cure has accomplished.
The above named troubles are caused by dis
ordered kidneys and liver, and the remedy
which cures the cause banishes the pains
which arise trem it. " jyl-2wd&w

A MOTHER'S TRIPLE CRIME.
Murdering Her Three Children Because She
Couldn't Take Care of Them and
Wanted Them te Ge te HeaTen.
Jersey City, July 2. Mary O'Connor,
45 years old, living at 45 Walter avenue,
this city, murdered her three children at
two o'clock this morning by cutting their
threats with a razor. She says she first
tried te kill them with a carving knife, but
she did net succeed. Edward, the young
est, lay in bed with her ; she killed him
first ; then went te a crib beside her bed
in which were her two eldest children,
David aged 6 years, and Francis aged 4,
and murdered Francis, he being en the side
of the crib nearest the bed
Her husband all this time lay ou the lloer
atthefoetof her bed, asleep. He was
awakened by the dying struggles of his
eldest child. When he saw what his wife
had done he ran out of the house crying.
Mrs. O'Connor says she has been sick for a
time, suffering from malaria, and has been
unable te take care of her children and she
thought that by killing them they would
go te heaven, and that there was no ether I
cause for her killing them. She was ex.
amined by Judge Peleudet this morning
and committed te the county jail.
The body of another victim of tlie Sea
wanhaka disaster, an unknown man about
33 years old, was picked up this morning
off Feurman street, Brooklyn.
Mrs. O'Cenner has been ill three
months with malarial fever, had grown
very dispendent, and feared the expenses
of her sickness would bring her family te
starvation. Her husband, a sober indus
trious man, was devoted te her
in her illness, and cheerfully pro
cured every comfort she required.
He says that being startled by a child's
cry he sprang up and hurried te the back
room, whence the cry came. He lit a
match and the-sight be discovered he says
set him wild. In one corner lay the dead
body of the eldest boy, and across the bed
he saw the bloody face of the baby and
Frank. They were covered with
bleed and their little faces stiff
and stark in death. -He then saw
the crouching form of his wife with the
bleed-stained razor in her hand, looking
at the lloer, he ran te the street and cried
for help. Mr. O'Connor says they always
lived happy and had no trouble.
Tlie heads of the two eldest children were
almost severed from their bodies. Mrs. O' O'
eonner was taken te police headquarters
when found in the room after the murder,
she appeared coeller and collected and
said shejcilled the children te send them
te heaven. She could net take care
of them, and new was satisfied, they
were well off. She appeared very weak in
body, and te all external appearances
seemed te appreciate the situation. She
answered all questions in a clear and com
posed manner. She was held for further
examination and removed te prison.

Chicago, July 2. A special dispatch

MEDICAL.
Brandy as a Medicine.
The following article was voluntarily sent te
Mr. II. E. Slayiuaker, Agent for Keigart's Old
Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi

the Brandy referred te in his regular practice.
It is commended te the attention of these af

BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant
was never intended us a beverage, but te lm
used as a medicine of great potency in the care
of some of the destructive diseases which
sweep away their annual thousands of victims.
With a purely philanthropic motive we pre
sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe
cially these attlicted with that miserable dis
ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which is
nothing mere or less than
Brandy.
The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or
less debility, will find this simple medicine,
when used properly,

preached at times, and in his discourses often
declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong
drink. When adviAcd te try

but after hearing of its wonderful effect in
the cases of some of hi- near acquaintances, he
