Characteristics of Kesa Bonheur.
Resa Benlieur leads the life of a recluse
in her country house. Devoted te her art,
she has never married ; and new, when she
has advanced beyond -the middle period of
life, she permits nothing te distract her at
tention. In person she is short and squarely,
built, passes her life under the best physi
cal condition, leeks healthy, and seems ca
pable of great endurance. The fea
tures of her face are small and reg
ular, her eyes a soft hazel and her
expression one of dignified benignity.
She has a low, pleasant voice, and a direct
sincerity of speech, most agreeably free
from the artifices' of compliment. Her
gray hair is cut and parted like a man's,
and nearly touches her shoulders. Her
dress, even when she is receiving visitors,
has a suggestion of manliness. She wears
a short, loose velvet jacket buttoned up
nearly te the threat, where it opens te
show just a speck of linen, and a short
skirt, absolutely innocent of train,
polonaise, and every ether contrivance
for impeding freedom of feminine move
ment. Her one eccentricity her cus
tom of sometimes wearing masculine dress
originated in her devotion te her art.
When she visits Paris or expects visitors
at home, she appears in the uniform of her
own sex ; in her painting room and in
her walks in the feicst, in the uniform of
the ether. This practice dates from the
time of her childhood. As an animal
painter she had te go wholly out of the
beaten path te find her subjects some
times te the great stables of Paris, sometimes
te the abattoirs. The brutes were well-behaved
; but the slaughtermen and horse herse horse
eoys did net always imitate their example.
Frem them, as well as from the crowd of
staring idlers, the young girl found her
self exposed te annoyance. There was but
one remedy, and she adopted it. She
shortened her hair, exchanged the bodice
for the blouse, and denned pantaloons.
Thenceforth her work went en in peace
and quietness. She is no masquerader.
Her man's attire is net for the pub
lic eye, but strictly for her convenience.
Sometimes she is abroad in this guise for
pleasure, and sometimes for business, and
she has often has the gun en her shoulder
as the sketch-book by her side. It is only
because she is se great ad artist that it
does net seem worth while te celebrate
her as a geed shot. She is out earlier end
in all seasons ; but especially in the sum
mer time. " The fly does net worry the
cattle, in the- morning ; se you can get
them te stand quiet for a sketch." Her
first and last reason is always derived from
the practice of her art.

Cultivating Hie Raspberry.

After all said and done, there is no small
fruit se certain in its crop and altogether
se wholesome as the raspberry. With any
kind of decent attention it will net dis
appoint the grower, no matter what the
variety may be'.It is true that it should al
ways be pruned and laid down in Novem
ber, ready for taking up in the spring
without anything mere te de with it than
tying te stakes. These stakes may be al
most of any kind and can almost always be
furnished en the premises such as pieces
of beards split off, bean-poles that have
become tee short by the ends retting oil.

When the canes are done bearing cut them
out ; and when November comes prune the
new weed and lay down as before.
He Ha Him.
A geed story is told of a colored boot
black, who, when passing a certain store,
picked up the stump of a cigar from the
gutter, went into the store and asked for a
match. He was met with the reply : "We
don't keep matches te give away." The
boy started out, but stepped at the deer,
turned back and asked the proprietor,
" De you sell 'cm?" He purchased a box,
paid his two cents and lit his stump, after
which he closed the box and asked the pro
prietor te put it en the shelf, and " next
time a gemrnan asks you for a match just
give 'em eut'n my box." There were sev
eral merchants in the store at the time,
who have since given the proprietor little
rest.
