Yesterday the Lancaster Sharp-shooters had a picnic at "What Glen and the day passed pleasantly, and almost without no table event until late in the evening, when Treat excitement -was occasioned by a drunken driver of one of the omnibuses owned by Mr. Fowl and used for convey iiir the picnic party te and from the picnic "rounds. The driver, whose name is Wilmer Martin, had a suven-shoeter revolver in his possession which was taken from him early in the day by one of his fellow-drivers, but he regained posses sion of it. Late in the evening, Martin be coming very much intoxicated, one of Mi-, l'ewl's ether drivers, named Jeseph Doeb Deeb ler, who had reached the ground in another 'bus, took Martin's team from him, where upon Martin drew his revolver and swore he would either drive the team or sheet the horses. These threats alarmed the pas sengers and tlicy left the 'bus, but being assured by Doebler and ethers that Mar tin should net diivc, they resumed their seats. Martin was put off, and the bus started for town, with Doebler as driver and Wm. May as conductor. On leaving the grounds a pistol shot was lired close te the 'bus, and en reaching the top of the hill this side the grounds another shot was lired. The 'bus was stepped and Martin was seen running away from it. He was pursued, captured and disarmed, and taken in charge lv Olliecr Swenk who brought him te town, locked him up and made complaint against him for carrying concealed deadly weapons, with intent te commit a felony. This morning he had a healing before Alderman Spurrier, when Capt. McMellen, T. J. Davis, Joel Haines anil Mr. Harlan testified substantially te the facts stated above In default of $:()() bail Martin was committed te the county jail te answer at court. Mr. 1'ewl states that Martin has been in his employ for some time and that heretofore he has been a careful driver. His misconduct yesterday was occasioned by a tee free in dulgence in beer or something stronger. THE WILEY 11.0 W. TIim Inventor or a 1'epular Farm Implement. Kcnnclt Advance. The late Bernard Wiley was known throughout Chester county in connection wit h t he justly celebrated Wiley plow, which for many years was the favorite furrow tinner. Many people supposed that Mr. Wiley was the inventor of the plow, but such is net the fact. The father of Ber nard Wiley owned the farm in Kenuett township, en which the late Win. Cloud resided. 'It was an entail and had descend ed te several generations. The elder brother of Bernard was James, and by the law of entailment the property became his en tlie death of his father. But James held that this was unjust and offered te release all interest in the farm if Bernard would pay him half its value. This was done and James left home with his money. He went te I'eekskill, New Yerk, where he pur chased a foundry, which, among ether things, manufactured plows. An appren tice in the establishment by the name el Harvey Cenkliug invented a plow which is conceded te be better than anything in use. But he was without the means te publish his claim, and James Wiley took out letters patent in his own name, and at once began the manufacture of the plows. He car ried en the business for a number of years and when he died, childless, he left his business te Bernard Wiley and Harvey Cenkliug as equal partners. Bernard went te I'cekskill and remained there for sev eral years and when he sold out his inter- i est. he came te Kcnnett and set up in the.' same business. But he found that lie i could make mere money by retailing the j finished plows than by making them him- . self, and, as he controlled all this county ml lie sale of the implements he did net fear ' any competition. In the meantime Hiram i Hall, who had been a plow maker, having i manufactured the bar-share, many of them with wooden mold-beards, set up in Ken uett, where he had formerly worked for i Bernard. He was obliged, of course, te purchase his castings through Bernard but as this interfered with the trade of the latter the castings were very slew at com ing. Finally Mr. Hall mentioned his trouble te Henry Brosius, a storekeeper in the place, and the two men formed an alli ance and endeavored te buy their plows directly from the factory at Peek skill. They called te their aid the scholarly Samuel Martin, whom they hoped would be able te write a letter that would bring the manufacturer te terms, but this failed. As a last resort Messrs. Hall and Brosius raised 300, and giving into the hands of James Green, directed luni te go te Peekskdl and purchase cast ings, lie diil se and te allay suspicion had them shipped te Wilmington, where, however, they unluckily fell into the hands of Wiley's agent, who conveyed them te his own picmiscs. Hiram Hall at once went te Wilmington and succeeded at length in getting his property. When these were used up, James (ircen was sent te I'eckskill a second time. He was at once recognized and closely questioned, and when the founders discovered that the Chester county plow makers were deter mined te have castings, they sent Mr. Green home with the message that Hull and Brosius might, have all the stock they wanted. Mr. Hall continued in the trade for several years, the best market being in Lancaster county, where left handed plows sold for $12. Matrimonial. Bev. Alfred 1 Drcisbach, of Easten, a 'member of the class of '77, Franklin and Marshall college, and of the class of '80 in the Itefermed theological seminary, Lan caster, was married this morning at half past ten o'clock te Miss Mazie K. IIoll IIell meier, daughter of W. M. and Lydia lloff lleff nieier, residing at 2:!8 North Mulberry street. A company of about forty relatives and fiiends of the young couple were pres ent te witness the ceremony, which was performed by llev. J. 15. Shu maker, D. I)., pastor of St. Paul's Reformed church. Mr. and Mrs Drcisbach left at 12:33 p. m. for Easten, where they will spend some time wiih friends. Mr. Drcisbach has several calls under consideration, but has net yet de cided where he will settle in the ministry. At high neon te-day in St. James Epis copal church, by Rev. Dr. E. W. Apple Apple ten, of Cheltenham, Pa., assisted by the rector. Rev. C. F. Knight, Mr. AV. H. Cewell, of Philadelphia, formerly of this city, was married te Miss Sue Hart, daughter of the late Asa M. Hart, of Reading. Mr. and Mrs. Cewell left en the eastward train at 1:20 p. m. Waived a Hcarlug. This morning was the time set for a hearing of the several complaints of felon ious assault, surety of the peace and carry ing concealed deadly weapons, made by Gee. II. I Iartman against Harry McAlpine alias " Wild Harry," the scout." Mr. Mc Alpine waived a hearing, and in default of $800 bail was committed te answer at court for the several charges laid against him. OBITUAKY. Death of Sirs. Helbroek.
