Silver Tongued. Ellis en Gen. Hancock.
Hen. . Jehn Ellis, congressman from
Louisiana, thus discoursed te an Enquirer
reporter concerning Gen. Hancock prier te
bis nomination by the Cincinnati conven
tion. "General Hancock -will be nomi
nated, elected, and -will take bis scat. The
very mention of his name will indicate te
the Republican party that we mean busi
ness and de net intend te be cheated out
of the fruits of our victory. General Han
cock has strong support from twenty states
He will be strong upon the first ballet, and
will grew stronger with each vote until he
is declared the nominee."
" But many Democrats declare that they
don't want a mere soldier." "Mere sol
dier," said Mr. Ellis, "Hancock's record
as a civil ruler is far mere glorious than
his soldierly record, grand and shining
though it is. While senators and supreme
judges have theorized about government,
Hancock lias governed. Ne American,
living or dead, has se briefly and tersely
announced the dual principles of our con
stitutional system as this ' mere soldier '
in a single general order. His rule in the
states of Louisiana and Texas was a per
fect illustration of the principles of our
government practically applied, nis sol
dierly sword aided te sustain the national
supremacy and the integrity of the union,
and his civil rule declared the immortal
and undying existence of the states with
all their constitutional rights.
"But it is being used against Hancock
that he is a Catholic, and was a member
of the commission that tried and executed
Mrs. Surratt." "Well, " said Mr. Ellis,
"there is no accounting for the ignorance
of men and the ways of the politicians. It
would be no discredit te Hancock if he
were a Catholic, but the truth is, that he
is a communicant of the Protestant Epis
copal church. Every body knows that
Hancock was net a member of the com
mission that tried Mrs. Surratt. At the
time of her murder he was cemmmanding
the military divisieu in which 'Washington
was included. Gen. Augur commanded the
department. The military commission that
tried Mrs. Surratt appointed its own
hangman, who was General Hartranft,
ex-governor of Pennsylvania. Ne, no.
General Hancock did all he could te save
Mr. Surratt. He. obeyed the writ of
habeas corpus issued in her behalf by
Judge Wylic, and left the court only by
permission of the judge, after exhibiting
the peremptory order of Andrew Jehnsen
suspending the writ of habeas corpus in the
District of Columbia. He tried te obtain
an interview for Mrs. Surratt with Presi
dent Jehnsen, and when the day of execu
tion came General Hancock stationed a
line of couriers from the executive man
sion te the place of execution, in order
that the hoped-for reprieve might be in
stantly communicated. I would be
ashamed te defend General Hancock from
the charge of cemplicitly with Mrs. Sur
ratt's murder.
" Such charges only show te what des
perate resorts his opponents are driven te
tarnish his illustrious record. Ne man of
truth and ordinary intelligence could
make the charge."
"Te what candidate will Hancock's
strength go if he is out of the race?"
queried the reporter.
General Hancock'.s friends have net
thought of a second choice. They will
stick te him, and they leek for his tri
umphant nomination en the third or
fourth ballet."
