" Great is Colerado ! Grand in her in
fancy, glorious in her destiny ! Iler vast
plains are rich meadows ; her valleys, fer
tile gardens ; her towering mountains the
strong box, the treasury of the Repub
lic." Thus does "Mess Agate," a noted west
ern writer, laud this truly wonderful state.
Her future is destined te be such as can
but excite the admiration of her sister
states and raise the envy of the crowned
heads of foreign climes. Rich in geld and
silver, her mineral resources are inexhaust
ible. Her fertile plains and rich mountain
valleys present unusual advantages for ag
riculture and stock raising. In a word,
Colerado is par excellence "the " state.
My last letter was dispatched you from
Leadville. Since then, following in the wake
of the star of the empire, I have wandered
farther west, crossed the Reckies and final
ly laid down my knapsack within the
hospitable confines of this mountain city,
Kokomo.
Kokomo, second only te Leadville as a
mining centre, is situate in a beautiful
valley in the justly celebrated Ten Mile
minint! district, en the western side, or
Pacific slope of the main range of the
Recky Mountains. Being yet in its in
fancy, its appearance is net such as would
impress the beholder with tin fact that it
had any claims te beauty. The buildings,
mainly the cabins of miners and prospect
ors, are rudely constructed huts, though
here and there an attempt at architectural
beauty is made by wcathcrbearding the
front, or constructing a very primitive
loekiug bay window at the side.
Ten mile avenue is the maiu business
street. A banking house, three large
hotels, and iimumerabls stores and saloons
adorn this thoroughfare. "We have also
three large saw and planing mills, which
are utterly insufficient te supply the daily
increasing demand for lumber. Our smelt
er, with two mere in course of construc
tion, is kept constantly at work with a full
force of men smelting the rich ere, tens
and tens of which are weekly being taken
out of Sheep mountain. The Summit
county Times, a weekly newspaper, which,
with pardonable pride, displays at the
head of its columns the legend, "publish
ed at a higher altitude than any ether
paper in the world," is our only source of
news. It is ably conducted and edited by
two enterprising gentlemen from Iowa.
Although we have net yet reached the
dignity of a church, a Sunday-school has
been organized and is progressing favora
bly. Situated almost en the dome of the con
tinent, where the mountains generously
divide their sparkling waters between the
Atlantic and Pacific, eleven thousand
five hundred feet above the shores of either
ocean, the climate of Kokomo is at this
season of the year, though somewhat cool
in the mornings and evenings, in the main
very pleasant. Snow remains in many
places the year round ; just a step from
where I am writing there is a large bank
which has been there for months.
Riding ever mountains is at no time the
most delightful occupation imaginable,
though accompanied by many various and
partially pleasant incidents and adven
tures. Viewing mountain scenery for
pleasure is excellent pastime ; but when
one, rather than adept the go-as-you-please
style of pedestrianism, beards a lumber
cart te cress the range and ebtaius his
best and most extended views at the immi
nent risk of his neck, the pleasure is te a
considerable degree lessened.
Leaving Leadville at eight o'clock en the
morning of Tuesday, June 8, we traveled
by a four-horse Concord coach ten miles
northward te Chalk Ranche, a village en
the side of the mountain, where we halted
te change our pleasant coach for the lum
ber cart above referred te and take dinner.
This little village takes its name from a
mountain of peculiar formation resemb
ling chalk in its almost perfect whiteness.
A geed, substantial meal, for which the
cool mountain air had sharpened our
appetites, was here disposed of; after
which we climbed into our " tally he !" a
Kansas farm wagon and commenced the
tiresome assent, two miles and a half te
the divide.
These wagons are the ordinary, spring
less farm wagons (here termed lumber
carts) of the East ; capable of seating en
the baggage and en the rough pine slabs
thrown across the bed for seats, six persons
comfortably ; but into ours were thrust
and piled eleven solid specimens of human
ity. At one o'clock, p. m., we started ; and if
I may be forgiven for enduring the hard
ships of that never-te-be-forgotten ride, I
solemnly vow never again te attempt it.
Over rocks, stones, fallen trees, stumps,
into mud-holes, mountain gulches, ever
snow banks, through ravines, down hill
and up grade, we lumbered along ; jolting,
falling, new en one side, then en the ether,
pushing forward, falling backward, grasp
ing one's nearest neighbor or the side of
the wagon in vain attempts te preserve an
upright position, until at last, eh ! what
relief we were politely requested te
" step down and out" and make the rest
of the journey te the summit en feet. Fol
lowing a well-beaten trail, made by the
many who had gene before, we with snail
like pace ascended these glorious old moun
tains; stepping very frequently te catch
breath, as in this very light atmosphere
any exertion seen exhausts one. The sum
mit, after many tumbles and slips, was at
length reached, and well were we reward
ed for our journey.
Standing en the summit of the Recky
Mountains, where the clear and sparkling
waters of the Arkansas start en their rush
ing flew te the Atlantic, and where spring
the head waters of the Eagle, whose wind
ing, snake-like course, carries them te the
Pacific, the grandest view of hoary-headed
peaks, pine-clad hills, beautiful valleys,
lakes and mountain glens, rearing torrents
and mountain brooks, it has ever been my
supreme pleasuie te gaze upon, stretched
in unbounded space before me.
While waiting for the waeen te round a
rocky point, I wandered ever the moun
tain and accomplished figuratively what
I had been told could be done
literally, namely,, make a snow-ball
with one hand while gathering
blooming flowers with the ether.
Innumerable banks and drifts of snow lay
en either hand. I first made a snowball
and stepping a few paces beyond culled
some beautiful mountain flowers of the

fragrance.
The descent of the Pacific slope was
even mere difficult and dangerous than the
ascent en the ether side. I cannot accu
rately describe the plunging of a horse,
the snap of a spoke, the falling of a seat,
driving into mud holes and snow drifts.

tributed their quota toward making up
the incidents of that journey. Suffice it
te say that after a thoroughly ex
citing and wearisome ride and walk of
eight long hours, te accomplish a distance
of less than, twenty miles, we reached
Kokomo safely but very sere and tired.
A single word of the mining interests
and the advantages of investing capital in
in this rich mineral district and I have
done.
The richest locations that have thus far
been developed are situated en Sheep, Elk,
and Tucker mountains, Geld hill, Clinten
and Mayflower gulches. Particularly rich
is the " Robinson mine " en Sheep moun
tain. I have net yet visited this mine, but
am reliably informed by Majer TV. A.
Mensch, the active and energetic superin
tendent of the "Lafayette" mine, that
fully four millions of dollars worth of ere
is new in sight. The " Wheel of Fortune "
stands next in importance. With proper
development results almost en a par with
the " Robinson " may be expected. Other
mines worthy of mention are the "White
Quail," "White Fawn," "Nettie B,"
"Pioneer," "Mida B," "Gelden Prom Prem
ise," "Little Mac," "Nerma Tunnel
Sites," "Elk Mountain Prospect Tunnel
Sites," and the " Lafayette," the latter
being one of the most premising prospects
en Sheep mountain.
A vast field for successful speculation is
here open for Eastern capitalists. Mines
are easy of access and water and timber is
veiy abundant. The prospect for a rail
road extending into this camp in the fall
or early winter is very favorable. Should
that be accomplished, and there is no
reasonable doubt that it will net, the rates
for shipping ere and bullion will be consid
erably decreased, and the whole district
will take a boom that will astonish the
world. Many interests that could new be
purchased for a mere song by next sprinff
will command thousands for every hun
dred new asked. There is ample room for
prospecting, acres of geed locations lying
undeveloped. Te these of the East desir
ing te invest or obtain reliable information
in reference te the mineral resources of
this camp, I would say that the firm of
W. A. Mensch & Ce., attorneys and min
ing brokers, can furnish them with accu
rate knowledge of everything pertaining te
minus and mining in this section. They in
vitc correspondence and will take pleasurs
in replying te any inquiries. Mayer
Mensch, a former Pennsylvanian, is an ex
perienced miner and a thoroughly reliable
man.
A word of politics iu this section. Ko
komo is Democratic, as is the whole of
Summit county. At tiie recent county con
vention, held at Breckenridge, the county
scat, resolutions were passed which, while
pledging firm support te any candidate
the national convention might be pleased
te nominate, expressed a decided prefer
ence for Judge Thurman ; paying a glow
ing tribute te that eminent jurist, Stephen
J. Field, of California, and selecting him
for second choice. The nominations at
Chicago arc looked upon with favor by the
few Republicans in this district, but poli
tics as a general subject for conversation
is utterly tabooed in this camp ; individual
interests in mines being the substitute.

Heavy Experts.
The expeit trade from New-Yerk has
been very heavy of late, and we observe
that for week before last the amount was
the largest en record for any single week,
amounting te $10,802,522, or $819,914 in
excess of the heaviest previous total, at
the commencement of last September. The
principle items were breadstufis, provi previ
sions, cotton, fcc, but a large increase
was shown in the shipments of butter,
cheese and general merchandise. As usual,
the bulk went te British and Continental
ports ; but the gain is net alone in that
quarter, as ether countries are taking
much mere steadily and extensively
of American products. Since the first of
January, adds the New Yerk Evening Pest,
the total shipments from New Yerk
amount te $177,062,246, against $145,144,
191 same period last year an increase in
five and one-half months of $32,518,055, or
ever 22 per cent.
The English Cheese Market.
The increasing demand for American
cheese in England finds explanation in such
items as the following, which appear from
time te time in our English exchanges :
At the bi-mently fair at Derby, June 1st
the show of cheese was remarkably limited
in all probability ten tens would cover the
whole of it. Prices ranged from 70s. te
80s. per cwt. of 120 pounds. It is clear
that net only arc there no old stocks in the
district, but that very little "fodder
cheese " has been made this spring.
