Dissatisfied with the CensHs Betarns.
The superintendent of the census is
besieged with the complaints of a few
citizens of diverse metropolitan, provin
cial, and rural communities of the manner
in which the census enumerators have per
formed their work charging upon them
the failure te bring the official figures up
te the popular expectations. lie says this
is an old story, and grows out
of the rivalries of cities. That he never
heard of a thrifty community that was
net constantly troubling itself about
the progress of its neighbors; that
a few years age the rivalry was between
Chicago and Cincinnati, and it was impos
sible te satisfy them even en the authority
of official figures. In the race of popula
tion Cincinnati has been distanced, and
St. Leuis is new the rival of Chicago in
this respect, and he presumes this contest
will be carried ahead quite vigorously in
the future, as St. Leuis commands the
great river trade of the whole
Mississippi valley, and Chicago
that of the great lakes ; that in
the next decade commercial and mercan
tile activity will determine which of these
metropolitan cities will control the major
portion of this source of wealth and stim
ulus te the gravitation of population. In
alluding te the claims of cities he says that
while there is no authority at all en such
questions, he can revise the census in any
community where it can be fully demon
strated that the work was inefficient or in
accurate, by the appointment of a new
supervisor and a complete new set of enu
merators. He said that the same complaints were
made by Philadelphia and New Yerk at
the last census, and in order te satisfy the
clamor a new set of officers were appointed
aud a new enumeration made, with no
material change in the result,
the second corroborating the first. He
is net yet acquainted with the special
causes of complaint in St. Leuis and
ether cities, but lie presumes that dis
appointment in the results of the official
statistics as compared with the figures is
the cause, matters with which, he says,
the census has and can have nothing te de.
Ne complaints have yet been received
from Pennsylvania, though such would
net be extraordinary, growing out of the
possible rivalry of such cities as Heading,'
Scranton, Lancaster, aud ether Inland
cities.
An Enormous Yield.
A bunch of wheat containing ninety-one
fully developed heads has been raised en
the farm of Mr. Gee. J. Appeld, in Balti
more county. The bunch is claimed te be
the product of one grain of wheat, and if
this is correct the increase is enormous,
for samples drawn promiscuously yielded
fieni 44 te 43 grains te the head. At 40
grains te the head the yield would be 3.G40
grains for one, which seems almost incred
