LANCASTER J)A1LI INTELLIGENCER. MONDAY JUNE 21, 1880. Lancaster intelligencer. MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 21, 1880, Seng or the Shin. Baltimore Sun. A peer shop girl, in Londen, recently killed herself in a fit of nervous prostra tion and despair, resulting from incessant labor and peer returns therefer. It is the song of the shirt te a new air. Since the days of Heed, however, there has been a great improvement in the condition of workers everywhere, and particularly in this country, though even here many of them lead hard lives, laboring night and day, week after week, for wages that serve only for a scant dally support. In this city there is one very geed association for the ameliora tion of the condition of working women that which provides for their legal protec tion and secures for them at least the wages they may have earned. It is sadly true that, in some cases, even this peer re turn is denied them. Small wonder, then, that occasionally one hears of a working woman driven by her hard let te despair and suicide. In the ideal world workers would net be required te overtax their strength in labor nor spend all their time at a treadmill, and they would receive remuneration sufficient te enable them te live and save enough for their support in old age. The ideal is spreading ever the real world gradually, but there are still many thousands of workers who, if they stepped te consider their future, would see little in it for hope. Legislators can de little, if anything, te help them, but philanthropists, particularly employers, can de much, as has been shown by the advances made since the song of the shirt was first translated into words. Household Receipts. A tcaspoenful or mere of powdered borax thrown into the bath-tub while bath ing, will communicate a velvety softness te the water and at the same time invigo rate and rest the bather. Persons troubled with nervousness or wakeful nights will find this kind of a bath a great benefit. A noted cure for neuralgia is het vinegar valorized. Heat a flat-iron sufficiently het te vaporize the vinegar, cover this with some woolen material, which is moistened with vinegar, and the apparatus is at once applied te the painful spot. The applica tion may be repeated until the pain disap jcars. Te stiffen a crape veil always keep it folded and pressed under a heavy book, and when it leeks gray, take alcohol enough te wet it thoroughly, and then shake it dry, fold it nicely and press. . Te clean brushes and sponges use spirits of ammonia and het water. Wash them well and shake the water out, drying en a coarse towel with the bristles downward. Little or no soap is needed. If you want geed starch, mix it with cold water; add boiling water until it thickens, then add a dessert-spoonful of sugar and a small picce of butter. This makes a stiff and glossy finish, equal te the laundry. Never put a particle of soap about your silverware, says the proprietor of an old silver establishment, if you would have it retain its original lustre. When it wants polish take a piece of soft leather and whiting and rub hard. Frem the uaker City. i:. .1.
