Secondary Scheel.
The high school building was filled last
night with, a very large audience, consist
i lg of school directors and patrons of the
public schools, who had assembled te en
joy a musical entertainment given under
direction of Musical Instructor Kevinski,
by the pupils of the girls' secondary school,
assisted by four boys of Mr. Hcrr's sccond sccend
aiy school. Te say the entertainment was
a 'oed one, and creditable alike te the in
structer and the pupils is but small praise,

owing te the ciewded condition of our col

them elegantly attired. They presented a

Following is the puipeit of the evidence
taken :

saloon.

lie saw deceased at the saloon between 8

Mr. Jehnsen then took the Heur and
made a vigoieus speech in behalf of A. J.
Ebeily, esq., the "counted out " nominee
for distiiet attorney. In the com sc efhis ar
guments he managed t gct befeie the com cem
mitteeas paitef his .speech, the affidavits
which the committee iedised te allow him
te lead at the feiinei meeting of the com
mittee. He also tiiedse get befeie the
committee the affidavits le'athe te alleged
i lauds in the Third waul, Columbia, but
the committee stepped him and would net
heai him. His speech contained quite an
an ay efligines fiem which he deducted
iess frauds, net only in the two wauls
named above, but in several ether election
distiicts of the county.
At the close of Mr. Jehnsen's argument,
the committee adjoin ncd te leassenible at
2 o'clock this afternoon te consider the
case piesented te them and make up their
rcpeit.

The list for argument ceuit, which com
mences en Monday, is new out, and in it,
for aigument, are thitty cases in common
pleas, ten in quarter sessions and eleven in

Yesteiday a deg, supposed te be mad,
was shot at Peter Wirth's, North Chris
tian street, above Frederick.

Gen. SutterV Career.
Gen. Jehn A. Sutter was a native of
Switzerland. On ai living at manhood he
became one of .the Swiss Guard, the body
guai d of Charles X. of France. On
the death of that monarch the guard
was disbanded, and jeung Sutter returned
te his native land. After remaining there
for some time he emigrated te America,
and was one of the pioneers who first
tiaiPised the vast plains and moun
tains dividing the Mississippi valley
fiem the Pacific coast. Establish
ing himself at a favorable location,
en the Sacramento river in California,
he elected a mill, and ether im im
pievenients, almost beyond the con
fines of civilization. In 1818 the first
geld cvei disceveicd in California was
found en his lanehe near the mill.
Thediscevciyled te the gieat emigration
te California which set in during 1849
and .-.uccceding yc.us. The niincis in
vaded Sutteis' ranche, defied his
autheiity and possessed themselves of
the wealth found upon his estate.

his fees he abandoned the ranche and
finally settled in Lititz. this county, some
fifteen j ears age, wheic he continued te
l eside w itli an only daughter up te the
time efhis death. He was univcrsilly 10
spected by all who knew him.

Kim Oil' and Arrested.
A boy named Chailes Frantz, aged
about 111 j cars, was picked up by Chief of
Police Dcichlcr, who found him asleep en
the street, lie told the officer that he had
run away from his home in Plymouth, Lu
zei ne county, four or five weeks age, and
that his stepfather's name is E. D. Parks.
Chief Deiehlcr locked the boy up and
wrote te his step-father.

Geeige Reimensuyder, esq., a member
of the Lancaster bar, will leave te night fcr
Dallas, Tex., whcie he proposes te engage
in the piactice of his profession. He will
be accompanied by Messrs. KillhclTer and

The Discoverer or Geld In California His
Sudden Decease in Washington.
"Washington, D. C, June 19. General
Jehn A. Sutter, the discoverer of geld in
California, and one of the earliest pioneers
en that coast, died at Meade's hotel in"
this city yesterday. He had been sick for
about a week with iullammatien of the
kidneys,and died quietly in fujl possession
efhis faculties. The news of his death
was at once telcjrraphed te his home,
Lititz, Lancaster county, Pa., where his
aged wife resides. His remains will be
taken te Lititz for interment.
GARFIELD IN HARRISUURU.
Cameren Joins Him " by Request."
Huuusbuug, Pa., June 19. General
James A. Garfield arrived here te-day at
12:10. He was met at the depot by a
large crowd of people and made a speech
of about ten minutes duration. Speeches
were also made by Congressmen Cenger,
of Michigan, and Williams and Humphreys,
of Wisconsin. In compliance with a tele
graphic request from General Garfield,
Senater Cameren met him at the depot
and accompanied him west.

Heading, June, 19. The carriage shop
and dwelling of Peter Kantner and
dwelling of Edward Bickel, at Kehrers
burg, Pa., were destroyed by fire
at an early hour tins morning,
less about $10,000. The Hie apparatus
was very inefficient and it was feared at
one time that the entiie village would be
destroyed.

Snow Hill, Md., June 19. The large
saw, planing and Heming mill of
Richardson, Moeie, Smith & Ce., together
with about a million feet of lumber, was
destroyed by fire last night. Less $2.1,
