Henry Clay, the grandson of the famous statesman, was given a parting dinner by his associates of the bar and old friends, at Louisville, Ky., the ether day. One of the toasts read: "Yeung Harry Clay; he will truly deserve the title of discoverer when he finds a race of people who never heard of the fame of his ancestor. -Mr. Clay will sail with Captain Ilewgatc en the leth instant and expects te be gene about three years. lllainc's boys talk, tee, but with mere sense than Grant's erratic son, the bloody Colonel Frederick, A. D. C. "I am sorry personally, that your father cannot get the nomination, " said a gentleman te Em Em eons JJlaine.tlic second son of the senator, in Bosten, the ether evening. "But, " continued the gentleman, "your father will be known as one of the most distin guished men of his time, as "Webster and Clay were in theirs. Let him wait awhile and he will probably get the nomination next time. " " Thank you," returned the young gentleman, "but my father has been a distinguished citizen for some years. Yeu will doubtless remember that Sir. Webster was put off in the same man ner that you suggest ; he was never nomi nated : had he been he would have been cleeted. " B BLACK SILK AT $1. Ever offered. Beth political parties ought te be en their geed behavior this year. The New Yerk Herald publishes a table showing that no fewer than 11.") districts arc repre sented in the present Congress by mem bers who were elected either by pluralities or very small majorities, se that slight causes might affect the political results of the election next fall, in any or all of them. Sixty-seven Kcpublican and forty eight Democratic scats arc in this precarious condition, making it for tunate for the people, as both parties will be compiled te nominate their best men, if they hope te succeed. What makes the situation mere interesting is the fact that the Democratic majority in the present Heuse is se small as te leave scarcely any margin for blunders and bad nominations. The country is likely te be best served when this is the case, just as a city is best governed when there is a body of inde pendent voters holding the balance of power and determined te vote for the best man en either ticket. In such cases of danger politicians become politic. m Te Destroy the Cabbage Werm. Gorinantewu Telegraph. The complaint still continues of the rav ages of the cabbage-worm and a demand for a remedy for it. Iu an agricultural jour nal, a few weeks age, a correspondent told efhis troubles last year and that they were already beginning this season, and asiccu for some way te dislodge the worm. Sev eral knowing persons responded, and in looking ever their remedies we did net re gard one of them as furnishing what was needed. But we can tell the inquirer and all ethers what is a remedy for the cab bage worm, which is within every one's reach, if it is properly applied. It is sim simply te sprinkle ever the parts of the cabbajre plant, where the worm usually operates, : pinch of cayenne or red pepper. Nothing mere or less. Keep a few ounces en hand and use it when needed, but use X carefully se as te reach the insect, and it will promptly dislodge it. Frem the Ouakcr City. K. .1.
