LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. THURSDAY JUNE 17, 1880.
Lancaster intelligencer.
THURSDAY EVENING, JUNE 17, 1880.
Wonders of Microscopy.
Thirteen Compound Microscopes at the Con
ference Meeting.
There was a large and appreciative at
tendance at the conference meeting of the
Lancaster microscepical society en Tues
day evening. The lcpeit of the curator
showed geed work for the month. The
lecture of Rev. C. E. Houpt upon the
"Evidences of Divinity as revealed by the
Microscope," was an impiessive argument.
"We regret that the crowded state of our
columns te-day prevents its publication in
full. His development of the cell theory
was especially clear and intelligible.
After the lectuic the micioscepcs weic
seen in position and the exhibition of the
minute things of natuic which followed
for an hour or meie was such as would
arouse intcicst in minds unaccustomed te
think, and gladden eyes unused te sec the
wonders and the beauties of nature se
lavishly distributed en every hand.
An exhibit of local interest, which at
tracted sccial attention, was that of
wheels and ether paits of the Lancaster
watch shown under one of the instalments.
The power used heie was fifty diametcis,
or 2,300 aieas, but the wheels and pinions
steed the sevcic test admirably, the accur
ate cutting of the teeth, and the perfect
finish of the paits in the delicate steel
w eik being such that we arc no longer
.smpiiscd at the fust-class time-keeping
qualities of these watches.
Under another instalment was shown
the Lei el's Prayer, the power used being
feui bundled diameters, or IGO.OOO sni
f.iccs. This was a faint spot en the gl iss,
bat was se magnified as te occupy a space
some two and a half inches in diameter.
Other objects attracting much attention
w ci e thebc under the pel.ii iscepe, the pollen
efnumei eus plants and tiees, injected piep piep
aratiens and live sliTles.
.Microscopes en Lxlubillciii.
The following instalments, owned by or
in charge of the gentlemen named, weic
exhibited dining the evening, though the
1 objects hcie named de net include all that
weic shown :
The piesident. I)i. Ciumliaugh, en
