I I LANCASTER DAILY lNTKlXlGKNCffR. WEDNESDAY JUNE 36, 1880. Lancaster intelligencer. WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 16,1880. dry goods, &-c. IMemu Jacksea Vtaalcates Himself. Habrisbdbq, Pa., June 14, 1880. Meuri. Steinman & Hensel : Gentleman : Having Been a statement published in the Lancaster New Era of Friday, June 11, 1880, regarding the ar rest of a certain Frank Dcauicr, by Con stable Lyle, at Columbia which statement is in general a tissue of falsehoods I would kindly ask for space hi the Intel ligencer te vindicate myself. FaUehoed Ne. . "And hud lieeii com pelled te leave $50 with one of the alder men as security for costs, &c." Xewthere were no costs, &c, against him, ami hew could he leave $50 as security for ceU, Act FaUehoed Ne. 2. 4Lyle appeared be- ft.w. A Hnrman .lacksOU.Ot tllO Ninth Ward. from whom he learned that Deanier had been arrested for riding en ears." Mr. Lyle never leanied any such thing fieui Alderman Jacksen, because he was net arrested for riding ou the cars, and 1 dis tinctly told Mr. Lyle se. FaUelioed Ne. 3. "He was released upon the payment of $50, which the alderman and detectives held for costs and fines for riding upon freight traiusupen this and former occasions." Hew could he pay $50 for costs and lines and at the same lime leate it at teeurity t as the corre spondent states in falsehood Ne. 1. He should learn te cover his tracks or net make any. FaUehoed Ne. 4. "Buteilered te give him (Lyle) a share of the $50 and let the matter drop." This I brand as an ii.i ii.i meutlU and the gentleman ? knew he lied when he said se. 1 de net make mis as sertion for the pcople of Harrisburg who knew me, but for the public of Lancaster and Columbia who de net knew me. FaUehoed Ne. 5. ''District attorney Hol Hel linger was then appealed te and his decis decis sien was that the alderman should keep both money and affidavit." Mr. Hellinger did net advise me te keep the affidavit, but te return it, which I did in his presence. FaUehoed Ne. 6. "The matter was then taken before Judge Pearson, who decided that Alderman Jacksen should cither give up the money or affidavit. The alderman took the latter course and handed back Mr. Lyle the affidavit." Judge Pearson was net consulted and consequently knew nothing about the mattei at that time. I saw Mr. Lyle at the Pennsylvania depot in this city, te-day, and when I showed him the statement in the New Era, and pointed out the above falsehoods, he ad mitted that they were net true, and he also denied te me that he had told any person the above. I refused Mr. Lyle's request because the affidavit which he pre sented declared that the money was stolen, and I as an alderman and an officer of the commonwealth commissioned by the gov ernor, and being as such superior te Mr. T.vln told him that I would held the money subject te the order of the Clear field county court, upon the con viction of the thief, which action any sen sible man (newspaper correspondents in cluded) would give me credit for. The money was net at any time held or claimed by me as costs or fines, and upon the proper legal authority will be paid or handed ever te the rightful owner. G. "W. Se tar, the advance en our goods amounts te nothing, and a strict in spection of our stock will show that at all times we arc as low in prices as any, and eltcn lower. A close examination of our goods is cordially invited. But one thing we ought te remind you ef: We may appear te be at a disadvantage when we are net, because of certain tactics sometimes employed, which we de net care te use, viz., the pretending te make re ductions when none are made. We use reductions te clear stocks. That is perfectly honorable, and it is necessary in a large business. The losses thereby incurred, though sometimes considerable, are trifling in compari son with the benefit te remaining stocks. New then, anyone who will take measures te find out where the lowest prices are, compare sample with sample, price with price, will find we are net a whit behind ANYBODY, net even in a single item, se far as we knew; and that we are below EVERYBODY en almost everything.
