FORGERY.
A Check liaised from 3 te 9500.
A story is en the streets that en last
Wednesday David Landis, butcher, of
Bird-in-Hand, gave te a man named Rudy
a check for $5, and that Rudy " raised "
the check te $500, had it cashed
and departed for parts unknown.
Our informant could net give us
the name of the hank at which the check
was cashed, and none of our hankers
knew anything about the matter. The
check was probably cashed by a country
bank. Rudy and a companion named
Adam Wise were at the Serrel Herse
hotel, this city, en Thursday last, with
plenty of money, and one of them get a
50 note changed, since which
neither of them has-been see n.

Sacred Heart Academy.
The seventh annual commencement of
the Sacred Heart academy, under the aus
pices of the Sisters of the Hely Cress, will
take place at Fulton opera house en Fri
day afternoon next at half-past 1 o'clock.
The pregramme is a varied one, embrac
ing line selections of music, vocal and in
strumental, essays, addresses and impres
sive tableaux.
Fire at St. Charles Furnace.
This morning at an eatly hour the stock
house of St. Charles furnace, at Columbia,
caught lire i:i some manner and was almost
consumed. The Columbia fire department
was en hand, and the engine of Columbia
company, Ne. 1, blew off a cylinder head
while in service. The furnace is owned by
C. Ii. Gruhb&Sen.
Train Taken Oil".
The Atlantic express, due ever the Penn
sylvania railroad at 12:25 at night, has
been taken off. The first train which
leaves for the East after midnight te-night
and hereafter will be the Philadelphia
express, due at 2:10 a. in.
Sjtlu of Horses.
Samuel Hess & Sen, auctioneers, yester
day sold at public sale at Fred. Brimmer's
stable, for Geerge Gressman .51 head of
horses at an average of $104 per head, one
of which was sold for $251 and two at $2:38
apiece.

A four-year-old son of Jacob Ilcrzeg, re
siding en Beaver street, fell down stairs
this morning and cut a terrible gash en
his forehead. He also had his nose in

Western States Visited by a Furleui Tempest

Cincinnati, O., June 13. The heaviest
rain-storm known for a long time visited
this city between eight and eleven o'clock
last night. In three hours the rain-fall
was 2 3-10 inches, and since then enough
had fallen te meke the total ever 3 inches.
All the telegraph wires were prostrated iu
the North and East wards.
It is reported that the depot at Hamil
ton, Butler county, O., was struck by
lightning and burned, but no particulars
have been received.
A cyclone visited a point near Frankfort.
Ind., destroying many buildings. Several
persons were killed and many wounded.
The prostration of wires and the stoppage
of trains preveut further intelligence.
The Storm iu "Wisconsin.
Chicago, June le. Dispatches from
"Wisconsin report much damage from Heeds
in me vicinity et tirecn Hay. The water
in the city of Oconto is from two te four
feet deep ever two-thirds of the city. The
damage te the city and lumber interests
en the river is estimated at a quarter of a
million dollars. Business is entirely sus
pended. At Grand Bapids, "Wis., the whole busi
ness portion of the city is under water.
A portion of it has been swept away and
what remains is in great danger. Many
of the stores have fallen down. 2"e esti
mate of less can be formed new. On Sun
day morning while Messrs. Bruinlajre and

Fergusen were removing goods from their
hardware store a portion of the building
was carried away. Fergusen was drowned.

A Notorious Counterfeit Captured at Last.
ToneNTO,Ont., June 15-Bebcrt Andersen,
arrested recently for passing counterfeit
notes, has been identified as Harrison, the
notorious counterfeiter. He confessed sub
sequently and took the detective te the
place where he had a number of plates
buried. Among the plates are two five
dollar casts of United States legal tender,
for which the United States government
have a standing toward of live thousand
dollars. The whole of the plates recover
ed are valued at $150,000. Harrison has
been counterfeiting for thirty years, and
his work was se well executed that it
passed through the treasury at Washing
ton undetected.

When the Heuse te-day resumed con
sideration of the motion made by Mr.
Lane yesterday, te suspend the rules and
pass bill in relation te sugar tariff, lilibus
tcrins ensued, and by withholding their
votes the opponents of the bill left the
Heuse without a quorum.
An exciting scene occurred during the
filibustering. Cenger said the bill was te
discriminate in favor of foreign as against
American labor. Frye replied excitedly
that the statement did net contain a word
of truth. Cenger declared this latter state
ment scandalous and unworthy its author

the Repubilcan side, while the Democrats
seemed te enjoy the quarrel in what
Sparks termed "the happy family."

New Yebk, June 15. The steamship
Queen, which arrived from Liverpool to
day, reports that en June 1, e00 miles
east of Sandy Heek, during a dense fog
she came in collision with the steamer
Anchoria, bound from New Yerk te Glas
gow. Beth vessels were badly damaged
and for awhile it was thought both would
sink. The Queen took off all the Anchor Ancher
ia's passengers ( 180 ) and brought them
here. The Anchoria has returned and is
outside the bar awaiting assistance.

Indian Murder at Fert "Walsh.
Winnepeg, Manitoba, June 15. It is
stated that the Indians who causelessly
murdered young Grayburn, a mounted po
liceman, at Fert Walsh, arc near Fert
Benten in the United States, and that the
authorities there refuse te arrest them
unless given a reward of $2,000.

Philadelphia, June 15. Henry Au
gustus Beardman, D. D., the well known
clergyman, and for ever forty years pastor
of the Tenth Presbyterian church, Twelfth
and Walnut streets, died at his residence
at seven o'clock this morning.

was murdered by one named Pfoutz, while
sleeping in the same room with him. The
murderer escaped. The murder was the
result of a previous quarrel.
Senater Hobart, of Patcrsen has been
appointed receiver of the First national
tand of Newark, N. J.
A man named Wilsen was instantly
killed at Marlborough, Ont., while attend
ing a sawing machine, through the burst
ing of a fly wheel.
