A Sound Steamer Burned and Sunk.
The steamer Xarragansett left New
Yerk for Stonington last night and at
11:15 collided with the steamer Stoning
ton, off Connecticut river. The Narra
gansett took fire and sank. Part of her
passengers were taken en beard another
steamer and carried te New Yerl- tb
morning, while another portion were taken
te Stonington. Xe estimate can yet be
made of the less of life. Only two bodies
have been recovered.
. The Survivors.
Stonington, Conn., June 12. Amongst
the Xarragansett's passengers arriving
here this morning were twenty-five women
in their night clothes, one of whom died
from the shock before reaching here. She
is net yet identified. Rev. B. Lockwood,
of the C8th street Methodist church, New
Yerk, also died.
Fifty Live Lest.
Providence, R. I., June 12. The
latest dispatches sum up the probable
less of lite at'fifty persons.
Appalling Scenes en Beard the Deemed
Vessel.
The latest reports say that a dense fog
prevailed at the time of the collision, and
every one was in bed when the crash came.
A i rightful scene of confusion ensued.
People fled half naked te the upper decks,
screaming and rushing frantically ill all
uuvnimiB, aim leaping neauieug over
board. All tin lights were extinguished
by the shock and all was in darkness, thus
adding te the consternation, but this
was seen followed by the appalling
sight of a sheet of flames, leaping up into
the air, showing that the vessel was en
fire. The excitement then knew no
bounds and the lire burned se quickly and
fiercely that peeple were compelled te leap
into the darkness and water beneath, seiz
ing life buoys, mattresses and planks, or
whatever else came te hand. One man was
seen te draw a pistol and delilicrately shot
himself through the head.
Meanwhile the Narragansctt nettled
steadily in the water, and when she finally
sank till was darkness again except the
glimmer from the lights in the Stoning
ton and a passing steamer, the City of
New Yerk. These vessels had meanwhile
lowered their beats and were saving all
these found floating in the vicinity.
The screams of the dying and pleadings
of these in the water was something never
te be forgotten. There were ever four
hundred, including passengers and crew,
en the Narragansctt. The less of life is
variously estimated at from thirty te one
hundred.
Cowardly Captain and Crew.
Many of these rescued alive arc badly
scalded ; two died en the Stouingteu after
being taken out of the water. Evoryenc
lest their clothing, and one woman lest
13.000 it: money. The crew of the Nar
ragansctt is blamed for inefficiency ; Cap
tain Yeung, of that vessel, being ene of
the first te get away in the life beat.
The Narragansctt went down in five
minutes after the collision. Twe babies
were forgotten in the stampede and were
left locked up in a state room and burned.
Ttieir mother, who is in a paroxysm of
grief, was rescued. An old lady,
Margaret Mttir, of Brooklyn, aged sixty,
was picked up floating in the water hold
ing an infant grandchild above her head.
Among the saved arc Miss Lizzie Peal,
Philadelphia ; Jes. Eglington, Wilmington,
Del. ; Mrs. S. Thayer, Pleasantvillc, Pa. ;
J. H. Slutzbach, Jeseph Albert, Craft Hay
and J. T. Dclavin, all of Philadelphia.
Mrs. A. P. Dix, of Brooklyn, was en the
ill-fated vessel, with her three children and
nurse. They wcie all placed en a raft, but
tuc rait upset and Mrs. Dix saw her boy
and girl, and her baby and its nurse,
washed away.
