e- - - jr ' --- s. LANCASm BAIIit IttlSGfeNC&L THtmSDAY JUftE 10, 1880. Lancaster intelligencer. THDBSDAY BVENINO, JUNE 10, 1880. MEDICAL. s Farmer and Gardner. Counsel by the Gennantewn Telegraph. There can hardly be two opinions as te the nutrition of hay which has been har vested at different stages of its growth or maturity. Clever ought te be cut when the blossoms are partially turning, and cured with as little direct win as possible. It is pretty much the same with timothy. If it is allowed te stand tee long it bc- pimpsHrr and liarrl and loses a larCC per tien of its nutriment and fragrance, and we doubt if it pays better, though it is generally believed that it does. Any judge of hay can tell whether it is cut early or late, and will net pay by ten or fifteen cents per hundred as much as for early cut. Spike Fences. These fences, no notice are getting mere and mere into favor, and se far as we knew directly they are much approved of. The objection made te them by these who have net tried them, we de net think will held goed-rthat they injure the cattle in being forced by one another against them. Against these we have examined this ob jection will hardly" stand, for while the spikes are likely te keep off the cattle after they once find out what they are, tl:e spikes are net long enough te de any injury worth mentioning, or really mere than the wire without the spikes. Besides this, the fence is an excellent protection against trespassers in fact, they may be consider ed as a perfect protection ; and in this re spect will serve the interests of farmers and ethers verv satisfactorily. It will de bar even dogs from trespassing. The ex pense also, when its durability is consider ed, is in its favor when once understood, as there will be no difficulty in attending te the repairing of it. Shallow M Ilk-Vans. It is singular te note that certain ques tions like certain epidemic diseases have their own peculiar time of appearing, and prevail at certain times almost te the ex elusion of all ether topics. Latterly, at tention is being paid te the question whether mere cream can be obtained from the same quantity of milk when set in shallow pans say two or thrce inches deep than in pans or crocks half a feet or mere. Our grandmothers supposed -that they had settled this question te a dead cer tainty. There was little difference in the one case ever the ether, but the fewer ves sels required and the ease of skimming decided the case in favor of what we should new regard as a moderately deep setting, and it has since continued te be the faith of ever milkist even te this day. But since the subject has been re-opened, our papers teem with experiments made in various quarters, and the result appears te be that both views are eminently right. In some accounts we read that the inch deep trials were far ahead of the deeper ones ; ethers have leund that the shallow pans were simply nowhere in the trial with the deep ones. As is usually the case, however, each party sticks te its creed, and, believing sincerely in the re liability of their own experiments, place no value whatever en the experience of these who have found different results. Te us impartial observers the conclusion seems plain that our grandmothers were right, and that there is no material gain in either plan of proceeding ; but the va riations recorded en either side show that there is something at work which aQ'ects the quantity of cream produced from a given quantity of milk, though mere depth does net ; and it might be wej th while te take up the subject just here and find out what this something is. Frem the Hub. There is perhaps no tonic ettered te the peo ple that possesses as much real intrinsic value as the Hep Hitters. Just at this season of the year, when the stomach needs an appetizer, or tlie hloel needs purifying, the cheapest anl best remedy is Hep Hitters. An ounce of pre vention is worth a pound of cure, don't wait until you are prostrated by a diseases that may take months ler you te recover in. Bosten Glebe. jl-2wdXw PS SOAPS!!
