Xew Terk Tobacco Market.
Seed Leaf ana Havana Lear Last Wwk.
U. S. Tobacco Journal.
AtlastBeme real, geuuine transactions
in '79 Pennsylvania have been made in our
market. The sales of this stock for the
week feet up 1,300 cases. Te this there is
te be added a sale of 700 cases by a Lan
caster packing firm te a Water street leaf
house. This makes the week's total sales
2,000 cases, which made the packers feel,
socially speakinjj, salubrious; commer
cially speaking, stiff.
In this market, among the packers of .51
Pennsylvania there exists the opinion
and it is being fieclv express d that the
U. S. Tobacco Journal is "bearing," in
order te sustain its early predictions re
garding the investments in the crop. This
is wrong. Every ene must admit that there
is an abundance of tobacco in the country
and that the indications for a brisk expert
business arc exceedingly slim. Why then
should we recommend te our readers the
buying of '79 tobacco in its state of fermen
tation when no one is able te tell hew it will
cure ? Helders of '79 Pennsylvania argue
that of the fine grades there is but a small
quantity, and that these who held aloof
new will have te buy inferior grades in the
future. We have yet te find the holder
and in this city there are almost forty-live
holders who will say that he has net as
line a packing as was" put up. The real
judge of hew much geed there is aud hew
much of bat! tobacco, is the buyer. He
can't tell even new if he examines the
samples of all the packers in the market.
Later in the season the prospecting buyer
can tell exactly hew much line tobacco
there is and who has it for sale. These
facts, then, and the consequent transac
tions determine the market value of new
leaf.
There arc alwavs people who believe
themselves able te tell what tobacco will
be before it is cured, and generally these
people find themselves losers if they buy
upon the strength of such judgment.
Seme of the eldest manufacturers bought
'78 Pennsylvania when it was still in the
sweat, but positively refused te accept
it later en. In the meantime the tobacco
'had taken en a ditVerent appearance.
Who knows that the "79 Pennsylvania
already bought by packers' samplers will
net be rejected in a few months'." It is bad
policy even for a packer te offer his new
tobacco for sale subject te inspection sam
ples in the fail, unless he knows that his
tobacco is peer. If the tobacco turns out
well, the party that bought it will net
give mere than he agreed te give for it; if
it turns out worse than the packers' sam
ples, he will want a reduction or reject it
altogether. Therefore, the few transactions
in '79 Pennsylvania which have taken
place are no criterion of the advisability
or iuadvisability of the investments at the
high figures they were generally made at.
They also de net establish in the least its
market value, especially as the figures in
these few transactions have been kept a
profound secret. The buyers claim te have
paid big figures. Has anybody a right te
expect them te tell the real figures.
A paper like the U. S. Tobacco Journal
offers its opinion, unbiased and unpreju
diced. Most all of these interested in the
movements in the market read its reports
and its opinions only for the purpose of
comparing them with their own. Manu
facturers and merchants who read their
paper, de net read it te learn their busi
ness. They read it te gather mere infor
mation ; they like te see decided opinions
expressed, but act accordingly te the pe
culiar circumstances afleetiug their busi
ness. In '79 Ohie things were also a little lively
this week. Nearly 700 cases were sold for
home consumption at 9 te 10 cents. A
few hundred cases-of '79 Connecticut sec
onds aud fillers have changed hands.
Old stock sells readily, and the aggregate
of the transactions of the week in such is
considerable. Wc detail the the week's
business as fellows :
Pennsylvania Crep '79 : 1,300 cases,
private terms.
Crep '78 : 700 cases ; fillers, 11$ te 113
cents ; running, 1G te 21 cents ; wrappers,
30 te 45 cents.
Connecticut Crep '79 : 210 cases ; sec
onds, 12i te 13 cents ; fillers. 7 cents.
Crep '78 : 55 cases wrappers, 32 cents.
Ohie crop '79 : 700 cases ; price given
above.
Crep '78 : 150 cases ; running, 9 te 10 J
cents ; wrappers, 15 te 16 cents.
Havana Market active ; sales, 550
bales ; no change in prices.

Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J.

84 and 8G Wall street. New Yerk, for the
week ending June 7, 1880 : 1000 cases 1879

There la perhaps no tonic offered te the peo

as the Hep Bitters. Just at this season of the
year, when the stomach needs an appetizer, or
the bleed needs purifying, the cheapest and
best remedy is Hep Bitters. An ounce of pre
