LANCASTER JXAJLLY INTELLiGENCEIl! WEDNESDAY JUNE 2, 1880.
Lancaster fritclUgcncer.
V7BDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 2, 1880.
AYaliable InTcnlien for Housekeepers.
A new article of glassware is being put
mpen the market which will resist the ex
tremes of heat and cold in ordinary use
without breaking. The glass being formed
into lamps, chimneys, tumblers, treblets,
tubes for telegraph wire, gauge glasses ler
steam boilers, etc., is subjected te a process
which metallizes it, knitting the molecules
of the glass closer, making them mere
homogeneous. The glass is called the
" Dragen Brand." Lamp chimneys made
under this process which withstand alicrcc
flame while wet, and the glassware may
be subjected te tests of ice and baling
water alternately without fear of breaking.
It is tough and flcxible, and is the only
i-- ... r nniferittand. ever made which
will 'endure these tests. The " Dragen
Brand" glass will become a household
word. It is a valuable invention.
Brown Stene as a Fire Register.
Dr. Cutting, state geologist of Vermont,
has examined and reported upon the class
of building stones known as brown stones,
free stones and sand stones. He found
them te withstand heat much better than
granite. Of the twenty-three specimens
tested, net one was injured at G00-, , antl
only three were slightly injured at bWJ.
AtSHMPthe effects of the heat were very
generally and seriously shown, but as
many as seven varieties were reported as
"standing well" temperatures even
higher than 100(P Fah.
