The advent of summer bids fair te re vive popular interest in one of the most delightful of modern pastimes, that of archery. This interesting diversion, al though but recently revived throughout the country, possesses charms with which ether sports are net endowed, and its char acteristics being of a milder and mere refined nature, it is net te be wondered that it has come te be popular alike with ladies and gen tlemen everywhere. Net only is the sport generally interesting as a rule, but te many persons who, during a brief experi ence with the bow aud arrow, have be come highly skilled in their use, it pos sesses a fascination which becomes stronger with practice. It is a healthful exercise, tee, and this feature is one of its greatest charms. Physicians are unani mous in commending the use of bow and arrow as an amusement that combines with the entertainment furnished features that are beneficial and health-giving, endowing the muscles of the arm with strength and vigor, tending te develop the chest and lungs, and te give keenness and accuracy of vision te its votaries. Uutdoer exercise is at all times te be encouraged among girls and young women, who for the most part are entirely tee unfamilliar with open-air pasetinie, and archery comes as a delightful variation from the field croquet, that for years has comprised the only lawn sport in which city girls have been vouch safed te engage, and which, however interesting, has certainly assumed a monotony due te long service. The season is yet early, but the book stores which make a specialty of outfits, are doing quite a brisk business in the goods, and the sales are en the increase. The im provements in the goods this season are net especially noteworthy, for when they were first introduced, they seemed com plete in all particulars. There are, how ever, sonic slight innovations which cannot fail te meet with the hearty approbation of these interested in the sport. One reason why the game will be mere gener ally popular than before is the cheap prices at which the various styles of outfits arc offered. This matter was originally the chief hindrance te the success of the amuse ment. Owing the competition in their manufacture, however, this state of affairs will be changed ier this season, and any body can procure an outfit at a reasonable outlay, if net a trifling one. Seme of the archery clubs in the large cities adept appropriate names and wear neat aud pretty uniforms; and the present season premises te be prolific in attractive patterns and designs. Philadelphia, Pitts burgh and ether cities throughout the state already report the existence of a num ber of clubs which include in their ranks expert bowmen as well as unprac ticcd novices, "and friendly contests will doubtless be in order as seen as a de gree of skill in marksmanship is attained that shall seem likely te warrant the exhi bition. The clubs which in membership usually number from a dozen up, are equally divided between the sexes, and in many of them the ladies arc net behind their big brothers in the skillful use of the bow. In the selec tion of titles the prefix "weed " is quite popular, and such names as "Laucc "Laucc "Laucc woed," " Hirniniwoed," "Edgcwoed," " Elmwood," arc generally appropriated. That the "boom" will reach this city there is every reason te expect, especially since it is known that there are some skill ful bowmen among the young folks here abouts who last summer constituted them selves into apremisingarcheryclub. There is plenty of material here for several or ganizations who might occupy their sum mer leisure pleasantly and profitably iu this harmless, healthful and invigorating out-deer sport. Frem the Hub.
