United States Tobacco Journal. If any of our readers in the country should have been informed tbat large transactions in '79 Pennsylvania vrere made in our market this week, they may, upon our responsibility, call it an untruth. There arc some thirty or forty holders of '7'J Pennsylvania in this market whose im im acinatien is lired by the slightest rumor of a transaction in this kind of tobacco, and they at once become pregnant with the idea that there is an army of buyers ready te sweep down upon them with offers should they (the holders) show the slight est nessiblc weakening in their assumed grand and lefty attitude of holders of that great, glorious, unsurpassed '70 Pennsyl vania, without which Cigar manufacturers will be regular, downright " gene geese." Shcre arc one or two manufacturers in this city who arc almost weekly mentioned as having purchased new Pennsylvania from this or that linn, and who, when interro gated en this point, de net in se many words verify the rumor, but try te inti mate that such is the case. The fact of the matter is that these people for reasons perhaps best known te themselves, merely permit their names te be used te get up an excitement and induce ether manufac turers and also jobbers te buy out packings. The resectable class of merchants, though, leek unen these people as counterparts of the steel pigeons of gambling dens. With feverish anxiety almost, our holders of new tobacco new scan the reports of this year's crop. Its failure means a r.iin of geld, a success, a financial disaster. When will the manufacturers and jobbers buy new tobacco, is asked constantly; what they will buy, does net seem te be of any great importance. Let us answer. The manufactures and jobbers will buy new if they can get Pennsylvania, running, for about 14 te 18 cents : whether they will buy it at that figure or for mere or less, depends upon tiie weather during the next four months. The '7!) Ohie, Wisconsin and state begin te attract the attention of manufacturers and jobbers. At the com mencement of the packing season these to baccos were spoken of as being almost worthless. At a later period, however, timid purchases of the same were made, and of late nearly every thing has been hntiirlit iin all of it for a trreat deal less money than was paul for the Pennsylvania. Prospective buyers new argue as follews: "If the '7!) Ohie, Wisconsin and state had been worthless, people would net have paid from 5 te 10 cents a pound for these growths, and would net recently have been se eager te secure them. If they arc as geed in quality as the Pennsylvania, we want them because each of them is vastly cheaper ; if net as geed in quality, we'll provide the quality." They knew hew te give leaf quality. This important fact, new in the possession of cigar manufacturers, has changed the situation of the market and the crops. Connecticut, we repeat, is outside of spec ulatien. It sells as it has always sold when it was geed for anything ; and as the '7'J crop is as geed as or no worse than the '77 and '78 crops, the prices de net play an ini ini pei taut part. Experts remain almost en tirely neglected. Sales this week were as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '79 : (Humored and taken as being true). eOO cases, p. t. Crep '78: 500 cases ; fillers, 1H te 11 3 cents ; running, 1G te 21 cents ; wrappeis, 30 te 43 cents. Connecticut Crep '79 : 100 cases ; sec onds, W cents ; tillers, 7 cents. Crep '78 : (:') State Ciep '78 : leO cases, p. t. Wisconsin Crep '78: 150 cases, low runnimr. 11 cents : wrappers, 17 cents.
