'V LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. MONDAY, MAY 3J, 1880. THE CENSUS. GET KEADY FOK THE ENUMEBATOIt. Powell, Miller and Snyder " Bounced" Be plaeed With Better Men. Suspervisorefthe Ceusus H. C. Snow den, continued his inquiries en Saturday afternoon regarding the popular objections te lus especially offensive appointments of Samuel Powell, of the Third ward; Fred Miller of the Seventh ; and Adam Snyder of the Eighth, as census enumerators in thiscitv. His inquiries satisfied him that the objections were well founded and re sulted in the official action which is thus communicated by him te the Intelligent ci:h : Adam Snyder, enumerator of 100th district, part of 8th waid, Lancaster city, lias resigned, and Christopher A. Oblcnder is appointed in his place. Jeseph 51. Kreider takes the place of Sam'l A. Powell in 1.1 1st district, part of 3d ward, and Jeseph CLirksen, that of Frederick Miller, 138th district, part of 7th ward. These gentlemen weie sworn in befeie Judge Livingston en Saturday evening. It is generally understood that Sny der's resignation was compelled and that some of the local Republican politicians vainly made a most earnest effort for his icteutien, even if Miller and Powell had te The new appointees aic well knevvnns entiiely competent pciens ; Kreider .ind Ohlcniler arc Democrats and Clarksen a censeiv.itive Republican. They are all well qualified and of high personal charac ter. Mr. Snow den's action meets with univei-sal approval among all the better class of citizens, anil is contrasted with Judge Patterson's te the disadvantage of that great and geed man. The Republican lietcis were dischaigctl from jail at an e.nly hour te-day. Messrs. Ciarksen, Oblcnder and Kreider, together vv itli the ether city enumerator s, begin their weik te-morrow. Citizens may expect te be called upon and should be icady te promptly give the necessary infei illation. It is suggested that propri etors of bearding houses and hotels either fix an hour for all their guests te be en hand te answer the interrogatories, or pro pre cur e answers te them ami furnish the same te the enumerators. Fer the information of the general public we publish the fol lowing abstract of the Enumerators' Kllits anil Duties. The instructions especially define it te be "the duty of an enumerator, in the exer cise of his authority te visit houses arrd interrogate members of families resident theicru as provided by law, te use great courtesy aud consideration. A-ude, per emptory or overbearing demeanor would net only be a wiongte the families visited, but would work air injuiy te the ceusu, by rendering the members of these families le-s dispened te give information with full ness and exactness. It is entirety possible for the enumerator te be piempt. rapid and decisive in announcing his object and his authority, aud irr going threuglr the whole li-t of questions te be proposed, and at the same time net te ai eusc any antagonism or give any offense." The questions must be arrsweied, whether it is agreeable te de i-e or net, under a penalty of $300. The questions are divided into schedules and an. urged in columns under appropriate heads. Schedule number one is the popu lation, or family schedule. The enumer ators must visit each family in every heii'-e and set down the name of every man, woman and child who, en the first day of June, 1880, shall have his or her usual place of abode theicin. Xe child hour between June 1 and the day of the enumerator's visit is te be recorded, but all persons who have died between these dates must be enumerated. The fust column contains the number of the house, the sec ond the number of persons in the family, tliethiid their names, the fourth, fifth and sixth their ages, sex and color. Column thiiteen relates te occupation, in regard te which the enumerator will need te ask sev eral questions in order te get his informa tion irr definite shape. Column twenty four relates te the birth of each person named, which must also be given accurate ly. The relationship of all members of families must be distinctly stated, their civil condition, whether married, widowed ersingle ; the qucstierr as te whether nat uralized or alien must be airswercd by all persons of foreign birth, and the question will also be asked as te the phj sical condi tion of cveiy inhabitant of a house, wheth er active or disabled, maimed, crippled, bedridden, deaf, dumb, blind, insane or idiotic. This embodies about all the ques tions which will be asked from house te house, but schedule number 2, relating te agirculture, contains a very full list of in quiries about farms, stock, implements and cieps. Other schedules l elate te busi ness and industry, ethers agairr te railroads and ether corporations, the object be ing te get complete returns in regard te every part of our mateiral resources.
