Whenever we tell a friend he should
thin his fruit, he talks about the curculie,
the codling-moth, the birds and the boys,
and "guesses there will be thiuning
enough before the season gets through."
This is true in its way. Wherever these
troubles exist te any great extent it is net
much use te grew fruit at all. But there
arc some who de net leave all their irar
deuing tb insects and vermiu some who
dispute the right of these pests te interfere
at all, and wage war, successful war,
agaiust them ; but even these de net half
appreciate the value of thinning their
The cv:I of overbearing is particularly
apparent in dwarf jK:ars and grapes. As
a general thing there is rarely a grape
vine but would be benefited by having
its bunches cut away, and some of the
free-bearing dwarf pears might have from
eue-third te one-half. The grapes may be
cut away as seen as they can le seen ; but
the pear should be left until somewhat
grown, as they often fall after they arc
pretty well advanced. It net only helps
the size of the fruit left, but is a gain te
the future health of the tree.
A Geed anil Wholesome Harvest Drink,
As alcoholic drinks have happily long
been driven from the harvest fields, there
have been various drinks besides water
substituted, but scarcely any of them
meeting fully the conditions sought for in
the way of a wholesome, satisfying bever
age. Water, even in all its purity, does
net seem te quench the thirst and stimu
late the body, as it produces additional
perspiration and passes through the pores
almost like passing through a colander,
leaving the system exhausted and weak ;
besides, a drink of cold water, when suller
ing under a great degree of heat, is dan
gerous, even at times producing sudden
death. Latterly in England and elsewhere
a drink is prepared by mixing oatmeal
with water, in the proportion of three or
four ounces te a gallon of water. This is
found net only te satisfy the thirst better
than water, or molasses and water, even
when tempered with vinegar or ether acid,
but te preduec additional strength of body.
Oatmeal possesses a peculiar aroma and
acts as a stimulant te the surface of the
skin as te cause the complete digestion of
the liquid. Men employed in an atmo
sphere of the intensest heat arc much com
forted with it, and become very fend of it.
Hence it is in a measure "victuals and
drink," possessing only virtues and with
out any drawbacks whatever.
Just new the time is here te give it a
trial ; and wc shall be glad if at the end of
the season these substituting the oatmeal
and water will make report as te the results.
