The Camerons were at work with money
and machinery, and all ethers must merge
into this one issue. The election
in some of the wards in the citT was a
great fraud. The machine used money
freely, paying as high as three dollars for
a single vote. 3Iere votes were returned
than there are Republican voters in the
wards. There are murmurings
in the city against H. C. Demuth, renom renem
inated as representative from the city dis
trict, as the city has instructed for On.w
Many of our best Republicans declare they
will net support Demuth, and the chances
are therefore largely in favor of a Deme
cratic representative, as the vote is close
under the most favorable circumstances.

A prominent member of the Lancaster
bar, who said he was elected judge of the
courts en Saturday, but the ether man was
elected en Sunday.
The Election a Farce.

The machine men overreached them
selves by forcing instructions for Quay in
the city districts. If insisted upon this
win certainly beat Demuth in November.
They are new frightened at their own
work. The election in several of
the wards in this city was a farce and a
fraud, ever a hundred mere votes bein"
returned for the Eighth ward than there
were Republicans in the ward, and the
Seventh was carried for Quay by a special
contract, but the contractor refused te de
liver the goods for Grant. In the Sixth,
as high as three dollars were paid for sin
gle votes, and mere were returned than
there were Republican voters in the ward.

It Wan a Still Hunt.

The Grant and Quay movement was a
still-hunt of a two days' campaign and
time was net had te get the tickets into all
the districts in the county. In fact it was
net expected te win, but intended mere te
show that the claimed unanimity of the
Republicans of the county for Mr. Blaine
did net exist. The name of Gen. Grant
being left off the ticket was the first thing
te develop a strong Grant feeling and a de
sire te make a contest in his behalf.
Wherever an effort and a canvass at the
polls was made it was easy te make votes
ter uen. urant. it Is prebablv true that
the general belief of his nomination at
Chicago aided that very much, but it
shows that if nominated the Republican
masses will rally te his support.
Admits the Carnival

Lancaster county en Saturday passed
through its annual political carnival of a
primary election. This "theory of the
people" making their own nominations by
the direct personal vote of each individual,
is year after year becoming mere of a
snare and a delusion. We de net propose
in detail toire ever an v of the methods
that are annually gene through te produce
the results reached. They are familiar te
thousands of our "best " and some net se
"geed, " citizens, and there is net one of
them te-day who does net leek back ever
the past few weeks with supreme loathing
ana disgust.
The question that presents itself te the
mind of the thoughtful citizen is, Ought
this system te be further persevered in,
when it is every year growing mere demor
alizing te the political morals of the com
munity? It is plain that the "methods"
arc the same with all factions and cliques,
although they may net be of choice but of
necessity. A candidate or a faction with
out a "pet" has about as much chance
as a "stumptail bull in fly time."
The writer of this had quite as much te
ae with bringing about the adoption of
the present mode of nominating candidates
as any ether inidividual, and he makes this
suggestion new, net in the interest of any
iuuiviuuai or iacuen, mat the wise men "
of the party "put their heads" together te
devise some ether mode te arrive at the
public will in the selection of candidates.
Let us te this if only for a trial. It cannot
be worse than what we new witness, and
ler a lew years, at least, it must be much
better. Almest any change would be an
improvement.
Frem Fifty Cents te Five Dollars.

The means by which the machine car
ried its objective point were the most dis
graceful ever witnessed at our primary
elections, and that is saying a geed deal.
The vote of entire wards was net only
contracted for by wholesale, but individ
ual votes were openly purchased at prices
ranging from fifty cents te three and five
dollars each and Democrats and Republi
cans from ether wards were allowed te
vote against the pretest alike of citizens
and minenty election officers. Se shame
less were these flagrant violation of rules
and common decency that the better class
of citizens are disgusted and with one
voice demand th3t a halt shall be called
before these political Arabs shall have
produced such a revolt in public sentiment
as will imperil net only the safety of the
party, but the stability of republican in
stitutions. These remarks, be it distinctly under
stood, are net aimed exclusively against
the leaders of any political faction as they
have been arrayed against each ether in
past contests. The most unscrupulous
men of both factions seem te have "made
friends together" for a common
arising from a few mouth fights. The vote
was light, net up te party strength, net-
witnstandmg a number or votes being
polled in the second ward bv non-resident
darkeys.. Griest stock in the morning was
above par, a rumor being circulated that
incase he (Griest) was nominated he would
get an appropriation for a new posteffice in
Columbia te cost $40,000.
In the First ward the young Heg Ring
ers made a desperate attempt te elect Jerry
u.wu cuuutjr cummuieeman ; ne was ae
feated by Squire Decker, the Bull Ring
candidate, ny nine votes. In the second
ward the Heg Ringers tried te defeat A. J.
Kaufman,candidate for county committee
man, who was re-elected by a nice major
ity. Smith carried the Second ward by one
majority, notwithstanding the blue and
red tickets. In the Third ward the Bull
Ringers had it their own way, endorsing
Quay by giving him 120 votes against 12
polled for Grew.
The prices paid for votes in town were
from 50 cents te $3, a pair of shad, a red
or blue ticket, meaning a glass of beer or
whisky. There is considerable dissatis dissatis
tien among the "best workers" with the
Crawford county system.

Level en Saturday and cast their votes and
miiucnces, for the mspective favorites.
The bend that bound the faithful together

interesting, or the poll a large one,
and net readily concentrated en
the tally-sheet by 'Squire Chandler's
improved, and clerk-blessed rule of count
ing, for it was past the " hour of night's
black arch the key-stone, " when they ad
journed. It is well for the Chestnut
Level fleck that its shepherd is out West,
or an investigation would have te be in
stituted te see why some of the Presbyter

The details of the bararain bv which Mia
Quay, Mylin and Davis combination was
carried through are gradually coming te
light, and enough is already known te us
te justify us in predicting that this cam
paign will be the end of the " Bull Ring "
and "Heg Ring" factions. These facts
fully confirm what we said before the pri
mary that it was money furnished by
Quay, which was te carry Mylin through.
On Wednesday evening Hay Brown went
te Levi Senseuig, whose only point in this
campaign seems te have been the nomina
tion of Eberly for district attorney, and
said he had $3,000 which he had leccived
from Cel. Quay, and wanted te knew if for
tlie consideration of that sum he would
put Grant and Quay through, and threw
Eberly overboard. This offer, involving, as
it did, the defeat of the only candidate for
whom Senseuig was especially interested,
was indignantly rejected, and Mr. Brown
kept his money. Subsequently he went te
Senscnigand offered him $1,000 if he would
agree te carry Quay and Grant, with the
understanding that Eberly should net be
sold out by the Mylin faction. This was
assented te after a clear understanding en
the point of geed faith te Eberly, Seusenig
agreeing te scud the money for Grant and
tjuay, winch he aihrms he did. In
the meantime an arranffement was
made between Hicstand, Brown, Coch
ran & Ce. en the one part and
McMclIen, Mcntzer, Davis & Ce., by
which a transfer of votes was te
De made from Eberly te Davis, and letters
signed by these respective contracting
parties addressed te " the best workers"
in the various districts were at once sent
out by runners with the short tickets, in
structing them te de the work which
shelved Eberly and made sure the slaugh
ter of Reinoehl, which had been begun by
another 31.000 of Ouav's mnnev. ilisnenil
by Cochran & Ce., $4,000 in all, according
te the parties' own admissions, having been
invested in this wholesale fraud upon the
people, jur. Bensemg says he can trace
in the returns of certain districts hew
about 1,100 votes were thus stolen from
Ad.lm Eberly in return for about 800
given for Grant and Quay.
Hay Brown had two or three conferences
with Quay en this business, and there weie
conferences at Mrs. Nehr'sef the high con
tracting parties, te which Sensenig was net
invited, the details of which form a very
intcrsting chapter in the history of this
wholesale fraud upon the people.

The Third Ward Lemuel Drewn?

In this ward the election beard, with the
exception of one clerk, was set up in the
interests of the Griest-Mylin-Davis com
bination, which had things pretty much
their own way. During a lull in the pro
ceedings when all the officers except the
clerks were absent, Sheriff Strine, who
uvea in me reunu warn, nanaea in a
vote, giving the name of G. A. Tripple.
Clerk Thad Dickevtoek the ticket and
had it halfway in the box, when the ether
clerk, Eph. Shaub, protested and the
ticket was withdrawn. An attempt was
afterwards made te treat this affair as a
"joke," but there were tee many jokes of
the kind which went through. Fer exam
ple, "Heggy" Leenard attempted te vote
a non-resident of the ward named Painter
in the name of " Jee Brown." Mr. Shaub
protested, but he was afterwards voted
under the name of Sam Doebler. It is
supposed "Heggy" had been instructed
first te vote him as "Lemuel Brown,"
but didn't get the Christian name right !
