A MAT SHOWER.
Ita Political Significance.
The Republican politicians have been
watching the weather with unwonted in
terest, there being a very general impres
sion entertained that a wet day would in
crease the chances of Griest for
Congress and that dry weather would
correspondingly help Smith. Their
theory being that the working politi
cians, a large majority of whom are
for Griest, would turn out and vote
no matter hew bad the weather might be ;
while the old bread-brimmed, longhaired,
shad-bellied farmers, a majority of whom
are for Smith, arc se careful and conserva
tive that they would net subject cither
their own bodies or the bodies of their
horses te the inclemency of a wet day and
muddy reads. Smith's frieuds, therefore,
have been praying for sunshine, and
Griest's for rain. The heavens appear te
be treating both parties with impartial
favor giving each in turn a streak of
favor. The day has been unusually plea
ant, the sky being partly overcast with
threatening clouds, which about-past one
o'clock p. in. condensed and gave us a co
pious shower; the rainfall lasted but a few
minutes, and had no ether effect than lay
ing the dust and giving the Smith men
better reads te travel ever. But the end
is net yet ; there are still some indications
of mere rain ; and however the politicians
may feel about it there is no doubt that
everybody wants te see it. as until this
afternoon, there has net a drop of rain
fallen during the present month.

COURT OF COMMON PLEAS.
Drilling the City Water.
As Superintendent Kitch was returning
last cTcning from his visit te the water
works, his attention was called te two men
en the banks of the city reservoir, one et
whom was stripped, and was about plung
ing into the water. The superintendent
promptly ancstedthe men and took them
befeie Alderman McConemy, who held
them te bail for a hearing this evening.
One of them is a one-armed man named
James Sellers, a truck dealer. The ether
is a one-legged man named Jacob Brobst.
Their explanation of the aft'air is that
while they were taking a leek at the reser
voir Sellers's hat blew off and fell into the
water, and that after vainly trying te get
it out Brobst proposed te strip and swim
in for it, and was in the act of doing se
when he was arrested. This excuse was
net deemed satisfactory by Superintendent
Kitch, who is determined that neither one
legged, two-legged or four-legged animals
shall swim in the reservoirs as long as he
has charge efthem.
Before Judge Livingston.
In the case of Jehn W. Newcemet vs.
Stephen Shaeffcr, the defense opened this
morning. They claim that there never
was a partnership between Shaeffer and
Britten and witnesses were called te prove
that fact. The testimony had net closed
when court adjourned at neon and the case
will be continued en Monday afternoon.
The Decket.
The docket was called this morning
when eighteen judgments were entered
for different reasons.
Next Week's Court.
Xext week the second week of common
pleas court will be held. There are thirty
cases down for trial, and Judge Patterson
will preside.

A Tight at Zleglcr'a Tavern.
Yesterday afternoon Frank McDenaM,
a tramp, who was recently liberated from
jail, and several ether tramps, went te
Zieglcr's hotel, en Kast King street, and
after ordering several rounds of beer, Mc
Donald refused te pay for them. Ziegler
then endeavored te put him out, when he
picked up a spittoon and tlnew it at him,
but missed Ziegler. The latter then struck
him with a club, cutting his head, and put
him out of thejieuse. McDonald picked up
a stone and threw it through the window,
after which he left the place. In the
evening McDonald called at the county
hospital te have his head dressed. He re
mained there until 4 o'clock this morning,
when hearing that suit had been brought
against him before Alderman Barr, and
that a warrant had been issued for his ar
rest, he made his escape from the building
and has net been seen since.
Ties Horned.
Yesterday a large let of railroad ties
which were piled along the track of the
Pennsylvania railroad, atCellins's station,
caught lire from the sparks of a locomo
tive. Many of them were burned before
the lire was extinguished.

is made by the officials of the Philadelphia
and Reading railroad and coal andiron
companies that operations will be con
ducted as usual, and that there will be no
interruption of business. At the collieries
work will be re-commenced en Monday,
and continue until Wednesday night. A
receivership will be applied for, and Mr.
Gewen or Edwin M. Lewis, president of
the Farmers' and Mechanics' bank will be
named for the position.

was sold down as low as ten dollars per
share, but new 11 is bid, with 12 asked.
Pennsylvania sold as low as 48, but has
new recovered a dollar. Lehigh Naviga

Beubaix solicited aid from English trade
unions, their funds being low, but the re
ply was unfavorable and the strike seems

night the steamer Algerna leaded with hay
for Odgensburg was burned te the water's
edge at Pine Tree Point three miles below
Iroquois. The lire was caused by a spark
from the pipe. The crew were saved.

A Widow's Heuse Burned With Her In It.
Leck Haven, May 22. The residence of
Mrs. Balser Friedler, in this city, was de
stroyed by fire early this morning. Mrs.
Priedler's remains were afterwards found
in the ruins, burned almost te a cinder.
Feul play is suspected, as she was in the
building alone and was known te have
a considerable sum of money in her possession.
